THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~May 1st , 2005

A Moment with Donna © 'The Spruce Goose'

"Between tomorrow's dream and yesterday's regret is today's opportunity"

Have you ever been in a place that inspired you to reach for new heights in your life? Have you ever looked at someone's accomplishment and found yourself discovering that you too, had the opportunity to aim high for your dreams regardless of the seeming obstacles?

That's what happened to me just yesterday when I had the opportunity to visit the 'Spruce Goose' in the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, (www.sprucegoose.org). This wonderful new museum houses a magnificent demonstration of a man's determination and purpose despite tremendous opposition. As you all know that man was Howard Hughes.

There have been numerous programs through the years that I have seen on television but I can tell you I was totally unprepared for what I saw. Here, in a beautifully designed glass paned window structure 10 stories high, is housed one of the most spectacular accomplishments of aviation
history. The 'Spruce Goose' wings and body are so massive that you don't see it until you look up and then the sight takes your breath away.

Vision...what seed does it grow from? How can we give it substance, get past our fears and keep moving forward?

The 'Spruce Goose' (a term Howard Hughes hated) came to life because of a need. It was July, 1942 and the world was at war. America had lost 800,000 tons of her supply ships to German U-boats. Henry Kaiser, famed industrialist and builder of 'Liberty' ships, proposed a fleet of flying
transports to safely move troops and material across the Atlantic. Henry Kaiser approached Howard Hughes and together they formed the Hughes Kaiser Corporation and obtained an $18,000,000 government contract.

The war ended in 1945 and criticism of the project was raging hot and heavy. The 'Flying Boat' prototype had exceed the government's funding allowance and an investigation committee was formed to probe alleged misappropriation of funds. Hughes invested $7,000,000 of his own fortune to keep it going.

On November 2, 1947, to vindicate himself and the investment of millions of taxpayers dollars, Howard Hughes took the controls of the 'Spruce Goose' and glided it smoothly across a three-mile stretch of harbor. From 35 miles per hour, he cruised it to 90 during the second test. Then to
everyone's surprise he did a third taxi test, lowered the wing flaps and lifted the seaplane off the water flying her a little over a mile at an altitude of 70 feet for approximately one minute. He proved to all that the gigantic machine could, indeed, fly!

The 'Spruce Goose' is a true American icon of our history. Sacrifice, determination and technological development were all part of her creation. She was decades ahead of her time in the early 1940's and now you can see her in all of her glory and many other fabulous aircraft in
McMinnville, Oregon.

We all stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. Howard Hughes didn't give up the fight and is an inspiring example of what planning, determination and true grit can accomplish regardless of obstacles.

We need to remember that accomplishment only happens when we give passion and energy to our dream. Without it our dreams will never develop the wings to fly, to fill the skies of life with their beauty. Aim high and know freedom. It is yours to claim.

Power Thought for May

People were coming over and I was frantically trying to get the house ready. I was also driving my family crazy, barking out orders to pick up, help set the table and not to mess up the living room.

While I was cleaning the kitchen, I realized I'd pushed them too far.

"Mary," I snapped at my 12-year old daughter, "where's the broom?"

"I don't know, Mom," she fired back. "Where'd you put it when you landed?"~Author unknown

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

This is the month we celebrate mother's all over the world. Powerful influences, they mold and motivate their children in special ways. This story is about Rosario Marin who became the first Mexican-born U.S. treasurer is an inspiration to all of us about the value of family.

Rosario was a teenager when she first came to the United States. At fourteen she experienced having part of her family left behind in Mexico as they couldn't get visas for entry into the country. However, her parents worked very hard to make family life as rich and supportive as possible.

Her mother, always watchful, kept her daughter company as Rosario pushed forward with a determination to not only graduate from high school but to go to college as well. This was quite an extraordinary thing for a young Mexican girl to do at that time. After all, girls were to marry, become mothers and live for family. It was all right for the son to go to college
but not necessary for the daughter.

Her mother never aspired to have the career, drive and determination for success that her daughter worked so hard to attain. Yet she never wavered in her support of Rosario and encouraged her to be the best she could be.

Rosario said, "Only as time goes by can I appreciate my mother, because this was a woman who did the only thing she could do - sit by me."

When Rosario was sworn in as the treasurer of the United States, her mom was in the front row. When she received her award at the United Nations, her mother stood at her side.

"I've always said that my mother is a saint, a woman of incredible faith. She's always been a role model as a mother and a grandmother. My hope is that I can emulate those qualities."
