THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER~ DECEMBER, 2005

Moments with Donna © ”Baubles, Bangles & Trees”

My living room is a muddle. Angels, stuffed moose, Santa’s of various description and so many other items have been removed from deep red/green boxes that have been packed away for a year. Even with everything in such discordant confusion it doesn’t take long for many of the items to find their special niche.

It’s the tree that is the biggest project. Of course, you first have to put it up. That done, its stark nakedness seems to call out, “Dress me up! Dress me up!” The ritual begins. I get out the 100 foot lines of lights, test them to see if they work, then wind and place them carefully around the various branches on the tree. Then it’s time for the real work, placing the baubles, bangles, bulbs and bears on the tree. Having emptied all of my containers goods onto my sheet covered couch the tree maestro is ready to begin.

This is not done quickly. No….there is thoughtfulness and care given to the placement of many of the ornaments and of course that takes time. Many pieces have special memories that wiggle their way up and out of my minds attic.

In our family we started a tradition many years ago where every Christmas we buy a special ornament for our tree. Sometimes we travel to a special community like Leavenworth, Washington or a special store to find that one item to add to our collection. After many years memories abound and they are all cherished dearly.

It takes hours to finish it all. However once done, all the clutter of the storage boxes is cleared away, floors are vacuumed and goodies are placed in their crystal plates. The result is a wonderful sense of accomplishment. Our home is now filled with vibrant color and energy that will be shared with everyone who visits this time of year. We ourselves will frequently sit amongst it all, having a glass of cheer, enjoying the goodies and memories of our blessings of today and wonderful past holidays.

For the next few weeks this holiday season will weave its own special magic bringing new experiences, new friends, fabulous food, beautiful music and various festivities into our busy days ahead.

May this holiday season bring to you and your loved ones the richness of love, warmth, fellowship, health, harmony and joy that you will cherish in your minds’ heart forever.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Donna Seebo

Power Thought for December

Somehow not only for Christmas but all the long year through
The joy that you give others is the joy that comes back to you.
~John Greenleaf Whittier

(~.~ ) December's Chuckle (~.~)

It’s not easy being on a diet, and a trip to the grocery store can be torture. So it was with delight that, on my way back from the store, I saw a car whose owner had come to terms with his body. His bumper sticker gloated “Fat People Are Harder to Kidnap.” ~ Sherri Booker

Recipe Box

Cathedral Fruitcake

This is a recipe that was given to me by a client many years ago. It has become a family favorite and I am delighted to share it with you this holiday season. Enjoy!

1 and 1/2 Lb pitted dates
1 Lb candied pineapple fruit chunks
1 Lb candied cherries
2 Lb walnut, pecan or almond halves-coarsely chopped (you can blend them if you like)
2 Cups sifted flour
2 Tsp baking powder
1/2 Tsp salt
1/2 Cup dark Karo syrup
4 eggs beaten
3/4 Cup brown sugar
1/4 Cup vegetable or olive oil
*****

Directions

Grease 10” tube pan, line with greased paper or parchment paper and set aside. Mix fruits and nuts in a bowl. In a separate bowl sift together all of your dry ingredients. In a large bowl mix your eggs, Karo syrup, sugar and oil. Gradually beat in dry ingredients. Then add to the mixture all of your fruit and nut mixture. Pack the mix into your tube pan firmly. Bake in 275 degree oven about 2 hours and 15 minutes or until top appears dry. Let cake cool in the pan before removing. If desired, top with holiday decorations of your choice.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories About Real People

This holiday season many of us will be enjoying various Christmas specials with our friends and family. There is a favorite with many families that has been enjoyed through many years. This story gives a little background about its creator.

There was a little boy who was nicknamed ‘Sparky’. It really suited him as he had endless curiosity and a love of drawing. Sparkly didn’t fare all that well in school however. He flunked every class in the eighth grade and in high school…well, that was pretty disastrous too. He was successful in being accepted on the golf team but ended up being a loser in that as well. Awkward, shy, he wasn’t popular by any means. Girls? Forget it, there wasn’t even a possibility to ask one for a date.

Sparky did have a passion and that was his artwork. He was so proud of what he could do with cartoons. The high school yearbook editor turned down his submissions but that didn’t stop him. He was determined to be a successful artist. He even submitted his artwork to Disney Studios. Yes, he was turned down by them too.

He didn’t give up. No, he decided he would try a new approach by writing his life’s story in cartoon form. The character he developed we all know and love. Today his work is loved by millions all over the world, books have been designed, developed and written about him and a number of television shows have been shown many times on our television screens.

Who’s Sparky? You may have already guessed the answer….Charles Schulz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. The immortal Charlie Brown will forever be an example of a boy’s dream to achieve what was considered impossible by those that knew him. Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, you made it happen bigtime.
