THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ February 9th , 2005

A Moment with Donna © 'Hearts, Flowers & Chocolate'

Purple monkeys with red roses, white, plump teddy bears with red hearts and millions of red/gold heart shaped boxes filled with chocolates greets our eyes as we walk into local stores. With the grey skies of winter here in the Pacific Northwest the colors of this lover's holiday are especially invigorating and awesome to behold.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. It is such a delightful day to celebrate. To celebrate love, well....that should be an everyday happening. This holiday should be savored not just because of giving the gifts of chocolate but to appreciate the people who mean so very much to us.

How did this holiday evolve? Believe it or not it came about because of birds. That's right birds!

Valentines Day was originally named for two Christian martyrs. That's not romantic, however, feast day for these martyrs was February 14th. People started to proclaim it as a lover's holiday as on February 15th a lively Roman festival of Lupercalia was celebrated with enthusiastic vigor and on the 14th a medieval folk festival tradition honored the mating of birds on St. Valentines.

And so, by the 14th century, the custom developed of choosing by a lottery a Valentine sweetheart for the day. Our current cheery custom of remembering those we love has grown phenomenally with cards, candies and various forms of affectionate compliments. Who would have thought that
birds and martyrs could have graduated to such joyous proportions where chocolate reigns supreme as a heartfelt expression.

Regardless, it is a wonderful day to celebrate life, to remember those who are closest to our heart and those whose love brightens our life, whether they are animal, friend, co-worker or partner.

Love is a universal feeling and without it, life would be bleak. Besides, it's a wonderful excuse to savor and enjoy the scrumptious delight of delicious chocolate. Any opportunity to enjoy chocolate is good.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, and all who brighten your life with their love.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

Do you believe in the power of love? This story will touch your heart and you'll realize that love is always possible and sometimes in the most unexpected way.

Sharon K. is a woman who had been devastated by divorce. Having been married for 30 years being alone wasn't what she had expected to experience and the divorce had been a very bitter one. She was worn out from doing a full time job and working at a second job just to make ends meet. Adjusting to her new life was not fun and she often felt alone.

There came an opportunity for Sharon to attend a retreat through her church. While there she talked with a pastor about her deep grief, frustrations and anger over the divorce. He made a thoughtful suggestion. 'Look at your life as a big book and you have just finished one long
chapter. It is time to open up to a clean page and determine what you would like to write in the new chapter. Perhaps in the new chapter there will be a special person to fill your life.'

'A man! That is the last thing I want in my life!' thought Sharon. The pastor just smiled as he noticed the shocked look on her face. He then mentioned that there was probably some person she would enjoy meeting. It was then Sharon said there was a gentleman named Paul she knew at her church but he probably wouldn't be interested in her. Pastor said, 'Why don't you bake him some cookies? You can put them on a plate, something that has to be returned and then let him make the next move. If he likes you he will let you know.'

Needless to say Sharon's mind became busy with lots of thoughts. She decided that she would do what the pastor suggested. The following Sunday, after the service during coffee hour, she shyly approached Paul, presenting him with the plate of cookies, saying she thought he might like some. Then she quickly left, giving him only enough time to say 'Thank you'
before leaving the church.

Two weeks later, on a Friday night, she received a call from Paul. He thanked her for the cookies, telling her how much he liked them. Then he asked if she would like to join him for lunch after church on Sunday. She accepted.

Almost a year later, after several lunches and dinners, Paul asked Sharon to marry him. Goodness....who would have thought a plate of homemade cookies could provide such loving magic.

Valentine Sweetness
This is a recipe that is sure to please your sweetheart
on February 14th.
Enjoy.

12 candied cherries - 2 tbsp rum or brandy - 9 oz. marzipan - 5 ounces
dark chocolate
- extra milk, dark, or white chocolate

1. Line a cookie sheet with baking parchment.
2. Cut the cherries in half and place them in a small bowl. Add the rum
or brandy and stir to coat. Set the cherries aside to soak for a minimum of 1
hour, stirring occasionally.
3. Divide the marzipan into 24 pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
Press half a marinated cherry into the top of each marzipan ball.
4. Break the chocolate into pieces and melt in a double boiler.
5. Dip each candy into the melted chocolate, allowing the excess to
drip back into the pan. Place the coated cherries on the baking parchment
and chill until set.
6. If desired, melt a little extra chocolate and drizzle it over the
top of the coated cherries. Let set.

(Variations: Flatten the marzipan and use it to mold around the cherries to
cover them, then dip in the chocolate or use a whole almond in place of the
halved candied cherries and omit the rum or brandy.)
