THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ March 5th , 2005

A Moment with Donna © 'Adaptation'

"Vision is being sensitive and alert to opportunities, especially those
disguised as difficulties."
~Frank F. Lunn

On an island of Udo, located in South Korea, women have for over 1700 years adapted to a way of life that to most of us would seem most strange. These unique individuals are called 'Sea Women'. As of 2003, 5,650 are registered to do this unique work. 85% of them are over 50 years
of age and they have a real passion for what they do. They work without standard scuba gear and are considered among the world's most skillful and toughest natural divers.

How could women in a Confucian culture that typically honors the role of the male over the female, take such a prominent role in this island area? History reveals the answer to this mystery. Men used to dive for sea products until the 19th century when they stopped because they were taxed so
heavily on their work. The women took over the diving, which was considered the lowliest of jobs, and became the bread winners for their families. The government tried to step in to stop them, in fact forbade them from diving. Why? Because the women were exposing bare skin while at sea.

Resourceful, these determined women ignored the politicians, gave them some abalone and went back to diving. From the moneys earned they invested in homes, side businesses and paid for the education of their children. Their role in society was unlike the rest of Asian world. In their villages, when a girl child was born, it was a great time for celebration. The girls would become divers about the age of 8-10, starting off picking up seaweed near the shore. They were able to make money for the family and their futures at a very early age.

In today's world so much is changing so quickly. Adaptation is the word for this 21st century. These highly disciplined women are not encouraging their daughters to follow in their footsteps. Instead they are encouraging them to follow their own desires and get as much education as possible to survive in the world that no longer needs what 'Sea Women' produce.

We all have to deal with our changing world. Change happens with such speed today that it sometimes takes our mental breath away, leaving us gasping and questioning about the adjustments we have to make. The Sea Women of South Korea show us that we all can adapt, turning what seems to be a discouraging situation into a useful, valuable and profitable positioning.

As you go about your daily activities keep in mind that life may present you with some unexpected opportunities to take charge of your own destiny in a very unique way. Remember, what may be one person's useless job may end up be a gold mine for you. Embrace opportunity and it will wrap you in the warmth of growth, prosperity and well being that benefit you and all who come in contact with you.

Power Thought for March

"Our problems cannot be solved at the same level of
thinking we were at when we created them."
~Albert Einstin

(~.~) MARCH'S CHUCKLE (~.~)

"While in Marine Corps Boot Camp, we were taught to keep our heads if taken prisoner by the enemy. Alter all, methods used to extract information, we learned, might not be the ones we were expecting. "Imagine that the door to your cell opens and in walks a beautiful young woman in a revealing outfit," said our instructor. "The best thing to do is not to touch her."

From the back of the room came the question, "Sir, what's the second best thing?"
~David Graves

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

Motivational expert Al Secunda once met the late actor James Coburn at a party in New York City. Al Secunda knew Coburn was shooting a miniseries and wondered how he could find several hours to socialize at such a busy time. They began discussing music and found that they were both flute players-Secunda a veteran of the instrument, Coburn a novice. Secunda
offered to show Coburn some learning techniques, and was again surprised when Coburn took him up on it.

In fact, they got together not once but twice. Each time Coburn, who seemed very relaxed provided a leisurely breakfast and made time for a 90-minute session. The thick script he had to learn was left ignored on a side table. Finally Secunda had to ask: How could Coburn to take so much time off when he had so much preparation to do?

Coburn explained that he tried to integrate enjoyment and relaxation into the entire acting process, from rehearsal through performance. By scheduling each day to include variety and pleasure as well as work, he not only avoided stress and exhaustion, he also opened his mind to unexpected insights into the project in which he was involved.

What a great lesson to be learned from James Coburn. Taking time to relax is just as much a discipline as being consistent, dedicated and hard working in our careers. A successful career is only a part of a successful life.
