Moments with Donna ©"Viva la Difference"

‘We could learn a lot from crayons: some are sharp,
some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names,
and all are different colors…and they all exist very nicely in the same box.”
Author unknown.

As I am writing this, cool winds are blowing here in the Pacific Northwest. While the rest of the country is cooking in high temperatures we are wearing sweaters as it is a bit chilly at the moment. Such is nature’s diversity and isn’t it grand! Mother Nature likes to keep us guessing. Just when we think we know it all she throws in a curve ball to surprise us.

Diversity, what a wonderful word! Webster defines it as: the state of fact of being diverse; different, multiform, variety. It’s the spice of life. How boring it would be if we all thought alike, dressed alike, every house looked the same and we all had the same jobs. We’d feel like we were in a prison of no escape.

There have been times throughout human history that this has been tried. Thank heavens for the spunky, individualized human soul that continues to reach for new horizons, challenges itself to stretch outside of common paradigms to seek new levels of knowledge and learning; and continues to dream of new possibilities believing that nothing is impossible to achieve.

Who would have believed that scientists would be working on organ printers? Well, they are. Organ printers may be able to replace organ donations by building living transplantable organs one layer at a time from one’s own healthy cells. Researchers at the University of Utah are using a prototype device built by nScrypt, in Orlando, Florida to place one-hundredth-of-an-inch-thick dollops of lab-cultured cells onto a layer of gel-based paper they invented. Researchers at the University of Missouri at Columbia are working towards building a working blood vessel for patients that have blood clots or heart conditions. Engineering blood vessels or organs with your own body cells, what a difference this can make in the lives of millions of people around the world. Phenomenal!

I realize that many times inventions that have been thought to be tremendously beneficial we have found to have negative aspects. However, there is always a learning curve to growth and development. Diversity of thought and opinions is important to evolve through fear of the unknown, ignorance and superstitution. It is the catalyst for change on so many levels.

Today I was talking with a man who is quite brilliant, hardworking and imaginative. Life has pitched him some hardballs and he struck out big time. Currently he is living in his car having lost all of his possessions. His outlook is quite amazing. For all of his setbacks he feels that the Universe has given him a huge gift. What is that gift? It is the gift of opportunity to turn his life around, to move towards a better level of new experience and prosperity. As Jana Stanfield says in one of her songs, “I’m not lost, I’m just exploring.

Embrace variety in life with joy, knowing that just as nature never creates itself in the same way, so you can discover your own talents, adventures and explorations and have fun in the process. Whether you are an inventor wanting to make a difference in the world or someone dealing with the challenges of everyday living, your uniqueness of individuality is what makes you special. Know that you in your own way are making a difference just by being true to yourself.

Power Thought for August

“Don’t wait till tomorrow to reach out and grow,
To learn something interesting you didn’t know,
Don’t wait till tomorrow to find ways to share,
To make a new friend, really show that you care,
Don’t wait till tomorrow to follow your heart,
To savor the beauty that life can impart,
Don’t wait till tomorrow to let yourself start…
Take time to do it today!
~Amanda Bradley

(~.~) August's Chuckle (~.~)

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. "Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today."? So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. "H-M-M," she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today." So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. "Well," she said, "Today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail."  So she did and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head.
"YEAH!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!"
Attitude is everything.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories About Real People

Challenges can come in all shapes and sizes. This one was a doozy and is an inspiration for problem solving in a big way.

There was a janitor who worked at the First Security Bank in Boise, Idaho. This particular night he found a box filled with eight thousand checks worth eight hundred and forty thousand dollars and accidentally put it on a trash table while he was cleaning up the area. That same evening, as always, the operator of the paper shredder dutifully pick up all items on the trash table, including the box of checks and dumped them into his machine, which cut the check into quarter-inch shreds. When finished he put all of the paper scraps into the garbage can outside the bank. When the bank supervisor came in the next morning and found out what happened he was devastated.

Most of the checks had been cashed at the bank and were awaiting shipment to a clearinghouse. This loss represented a bookkeeper’s worst nightmare since most of the checks were still unrecorded, and as a result, the bankers couldn’t know who paid what to whom.

What do you think the supervisor did? He ordered that the shredded pieces be reconstructed. Fifty employees worked in two shifts for six hours a day inside six rooms-shifting, matching, and pasting the pieces together as if they were jigsaw puzzles-until all eight thousand of the checks were put together again.
