There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t read or hear a story of tremendous accomplishment. Here we are entering into a powerful time of year where celebration takes precedence. It is the holiday season, a time of appreciation, expression of joy, sharing of good food, music, communication with friends and loved ones. This is a period of festive activities that bring color and an expectation of hope and camaraderie for all of us.
When I observe it all I think of how many individuals have contributed their energy and effort to enable us to enjoy what we do. I can think of a few famous people I know you’ll recognize such as Marie Curie, Thomas Edison, Napoleon Hill, Marva Collins, Luther Burbank, and there are so many more. In fact, there are many whose names will never be in history books, heard on the radio, television or the internet. There are the stories about courageous nine year olds fighting cancer and raising thousands of dollars to help charitable groups, doctors who are developing new understandings for health and wellness, engineers and designers who are working with ‘green’ alternatives for better buildings, homes, transportation and energy use, the list goes on and on.
Daily we are bombarded with how bad the world is. The truth is the world of human experience has frequently been one big mucky mess. However, if we aren’t careful we can be sucked into the muck of feeling powerless and end up just dragging ourselves along without paying attention to something that can change it all.
What is it that makes the difference? It is the individual. The individual who decides that there is a different way to do things, a better way to feel, express and design action, to create new opportunity. Each and every one of us is unique, endowed with our own particular talents and abilities and the ability to demonstrate them. Each of us has the ‘power of one’. That makes a tremendous difference. Every great achievement, every stride of action that moves us forward started with one person taking a stand, daring to be different, daring to challenge, daring to change.
This month I have the privilege of interviewing Norman Borlung . This is a man who had a vision of feeding the starving people of the world. Through his research and development of better growing disciplines for wheat, rice, maize and corn, the vision has and is continuing to be fulfilled. Today Norman is a vibrant, healthy and very productive 94 year old who continues to teach, research and travel, sharing his knowledge with all who will listen. I invite you to join my listening audience to hear his story on December 14th.
You have the same individual power that Norman Borlung and every other person of accomplishment has. Whether you believe it or not, if you focus on your strengths and live with your joy, expectation of the best and giving the best in whatever you think, feel and do, you can’t help but make a difference in this experience of life.
A grandmother teaches her grandchildren integrity, the value of money, good credit and education. A blacksmith volunteers time with rebellious young teens at a local school to teach discipline and welding skills. A plumber works part time to teach reading to adults at a local library. A female executive speaks at a prison educating those willing to learn. These individuals and thousands more I have interviewed through the years. One very significant reality exposes itself again and again. It is the ‘power of one’, the individual who makes the difference. When that ‘power of one’ links with others of like mind it changes the world.
As we close out 2006, give yourself a gift. That gift is acceptance. It is acceptance that your talents, your uniqueness make a difference. Stand up, accept and deliver your greatness to the moment at hand. The world of life, love, excitement and opportunity is waiting for you to recognize and deliver your best. You might never be featured in People magazine, The Wall Street Journal or seen on CNN. Know that you are needed, loved and appreciated for who and what you are. Let your light, your ‘power of one’ shine. You do make a difference.

”Ribeye Steaks withFrench-Fried Onions”
Tired of turkey? Here is a recipe, easy and quick, that should tickle the tastebuds.
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. crushed dried rosemary
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
4 boneless ribeye steaks, 1” thick, about 10 oz. each
1 cup canned French-fried onions
2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley
2 tsp. olive oil
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place rack in shallow broiler pan. Coat rack with cooking spray.
Combine garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper. Rub both sides of steaks with spice mixture. Combine canned onions, parsley, oil and π tsp pepper; reserve.
Place steaks on rack. Roast, turning once, 9 minutes preside for medium-rare, top each steak with onion mixture.

True Stories About Real People
Have you ever heard of Harrington, Maine? I hadn’t until someone sent me an email that truly touched my heart. It is this story I share with you in the spirit of the holidays.
Harrington is not an especially prosperous town. In fact, it is considered one of the poorer ones in the state. There is a company located there, the Worcester Wreath Company, owned by Morrill Worcester. His business is selling wreaths and colorfully decorated green boughs during the holiday season. He loves his work. His company’s wreaths and graceful boughs grace the homes of thousands of customers each year.
When Morrill was 12 years old, he won a trip to Washington D.C. While he was visiting there he saw Arlington Cemetery with its groves and the white marble memorials. The experience left a deep impression on his young mind. In 1992 he started a tradition. Every year he gives thousands of wreaths to Arlington Cemetery. These vibrant green circles complimented by a large, bright red bow offer remembrance and appreciation for those who lie in rest. His company makes the wreaths and a local trucking firm hauls them down.
Last year 150 people, at Arlington Cemetery, veterans and members of the military and Civil Air Patrol, all came together to place wreaths on some 5000 graves, including four at the Tomb of the Unknowns. This year, not only will wreaths be placed at Arlington Cemetery but Morrill Worcester’s wreaths will also go to 230 national and state cemeteries.
