Moments with Donna ©"The Humble Penny"

Pennies. Those bright coppery coins that fill up our purses, pockets and piggybanks. While rummaging through my handbag the other day to get some change I started to wonder about the history of this small coin than seems to accumulate so rapidly in my change purse. So to satisfy my curiosity I visited the Internet.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the design for our first penny was suggested by one of our most famous Americans, Benjamin Franklin. As very innovative individual I wonder if Mr. Franklin ever imagined that this humble penny would be manufactured from 1787 to today and that over 300 billion have and continue to circulate. This small copper coin also was the very first currency approved by the United States.

While reviewing all of the fascinating information regarding our first form of currency it reminded me how an idea can grow into an expression far surpassing our expectations. It may go through changes, just like our penny, yet the value will carry forward on it own momentum. How many inventions, ideas, concepts started off with a particular purpose and grew, expanding in ways we never dreamed of?

If you wonder what purpose you may have or what may be around the next corner of experience in your life, just take a penny out of your pocket and look at it. Realize that this small coin was the first of its kind. It has gone through all kinds of adjustments and today has just as much value and place as in the years past. It should inspire you to remember that you too with patience, diligence and earnest application of dedicated purpose can reach your objectives small or large.

Are you aware that more than $10.5 billion in loose change is lying idle in jars and piggy banks around the country? If you are inclined to save your change as I do, take a large container and put all of your change into it for a full year and you’ll be amazed at how it adds up. The famous fashion reporter, Mr. Blackwell, has had the habit since he was a little boy of saving change and he stated years ago that it taught him the habit of thrift at an early age. One man recently cashed in his saved 1,048,013 pennies adding up to a tidy $10,480.13. Another individual beat that record by saving 1.3 million pennies.

Just as you should never underestimate the value of a penny so you should never undervalue yourself. If the humble penny can be so significant, just imagine how you can multiply your talents and increase your personal worth by appreciating your own individuality.

“A penny saved is a penny earned” is a saying that will never go out of style. Saving is a wonderful habit to develop and maintain. Also remember that to invest in yourself is the best thing you can do as well through education, traveling and expanding into new areas of experience. After all, you are worth a great deal more than our humble penny. Just imagine how your worth will grow and the sky’s the limit. Go for it!

Cookie History

The ‘Toll House Cookie’ recipe was put into cookie history over 75 years ago during the 1930’s by a creative lady, Ruth Wakefield. She was using a recipe for Butter Drop Do cookies which had been handed down to her by family. This is a recipe dating back to Colonial times. But she wanted to do something different so she added some chopped chocolate, thinking the chocolate would melt and blend with her buttery dough when it baked. To her pleasant surprise she found that the chocolate didn’t really melt as expected, instead it became gooey chunks inside the cookie dough.

When she served these cookies for the first time at the Toll House Inn near Whitman, Mass., they immediately became the favorite of the patrons. A local newspaper picked up the recipe, which Ruth graciously shared, and readers immediately started baking the delicious cookies. Nestle Semi-Sweet Chocolate

Bar sales exploded. Ruth, being a good businesswoman, worked out an agreement with Nestle that enabled them to print her recipe on the back of their candy wrappers

and they in turn provided Ruth Wakefield with free chocolate for life.
This simple recipe grew in popularity. Nestle, at one point, scored the chocolate bar and even provided a chopper in the package for the convenience of the cook. That evolved in 1939 to the development of the chocolate chip we know today. Year round we reach for those little yellow bags by the thousands to fix this recipe that has been adapted in so many various ways.

Who would have thought that an adaptation of an early Colonial butter cookie recipe would become the favorite of millions, creating business opportunities for people like Mrs. Field’s and others. The chocolate industry has never been the same and today Nestle Chocolate and other companies produce daily tons of those delectable morsels we call chocolate chips.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories About Real People

For those of you who are seeking that special partner to share your life with this true story may give you some ideas to create the special magic to attract them.

A lady stopped to look at her reflection in a mirror and noticed how gray her hair was becoming. She was becoming a mature woman of older years now. She started to slow down, refused to add colorful items to her wardrobe, began wearing sensible shoes and overall just began to fill what she thought was her maturing role. She let her hair grow long and put it up into a bun, wore long sleeves to cover her old lady arms and when friends asked her how she was doing, she shared a classic response, “I suppose I’m doing as well as could be expected for someone my age.”

One day she overheard a teenager speaking to a friend, “How old do you think Miss Johnson is?” “Gee, I don’t really know but she must be at least 65 or 70 from the way she acts.” The lady was amazed….they were talking about her, and she was far from 65. In fact, she had only just turned 55. That was it. Enough is enough. So immediately upon going home she dumped her sensible shoes and matronly clothes. She started pulling out her brighter more colorful outfits, high heels and decided she was going shopping and made a date at the hairdressers for a new style, cut away the long unflattering hair and directed her hairdresser to use a rinse to eliminate the gray.

Several months later, a younger man asked her out and found it hard to believe that this attractive woman was older than he was. After his comments she made a statement, “Fifty-five is a better speed limit than an age limit.”
