THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER~ November, 2006
Moments with Donna ©"Breathing In, Breathing Out"

Daylight savings time is gone and long hours of darkness will be with us these next few months. If you are like me you’re busy planning activities that can be done during the daylight hours so you can be home early to enjoy a warm, crackling fire in the fireplace and smell fragrant aromas that fill the kitchen as soup is simmering on the top of the stove and bread is baking in the oven. Nice and cozy is the feel of home when the temps are dropping rapidly and frost is on the ground. Nature is letting us know that winter will be bringing his special gifts. One of those gifts is the opportunity to be quiet when the weather keeps us indoors and there are more dark hours than light.

Wally Amos is a man I have a deep appreciation for. I came across an article he wrote about being interviewed and asked this question. “What do you like best about life?” His immediate response was “Breathing!”

Wally talked about how a friend, Martin, had told him breathing is the process of being reborn. At the end of each exhale you die a miniature death, for if you never inhale again you are dead. You are reborn as you inhale. A scientific name for exhaling is ‘expiration’ and for inhaling ‘inspiration’. Martin said that there is a meditation technique used by the Tibetans called ‘tonglen breathing’. The Tibetans say we should take in the negative and transform it to the positive within us: inhale darkness, exhale light; inhale pain, exhale joy; inhale anger, exhale love.

This causes a transformation to take place within us. As we inhale the anger of the world (or our own anger) and transform the energy, we are able to exhale love into the world (making a better contribution into life). Wally comments that now is a great time to inhale the negative and exhale the positive. “This is a great gift to give to humanity”, he said.

This is a great gift to give. For as we do this, being consciously present in the moment, we receive the gift, then are able to give more abundantly to others and the process automatically ripples out to touch every living thing around us.

Walking is a daily activity in the Seebo household, especially since we recently adopted two Scottish Terriers, Kinzie and Victor. They love the outdoors and let us know in no uncertain terms when it is time to get out the leashes and take them for their excursions. I hold Wally’s thoughts in mind as I brave the brisk temperatures of the early morning. As I breathe in the cold I remember ‘inhale the negative’ and as I exhale ‘exhale the positive’. Before long I am in a most positive frame of mind and take the time to enjoy the beauty of the changing season that is all about me.

November is a month of remembrance and thanksgiving. Wally’s story is a good one to hold in memory. May your Thanksgiving holiday be filled with good food, loving companionship and grateful joy for this wonderful experience we call ‘life’. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Power Thought for November

“There is one day that is ours. There is one day when all we Americans who are not self-made go back to the old home to eat saleratus biscuits and marvel how much nearer to the porch the old pump looks than it used to…Thanksgiving Day…is the one day that is purely American.” ~O. Henry

(~.~) Novermber's Chuckle (~.~)

The pro football team has just finished their practice when a turkey came strutting onto their playing field. While the players looked on in amazement, the turkey walked up to their head coach and demanded a tryout. Everyone stared in silence as the turkey caught pass after pass and ran right through the defensive line. When the turkey returned to the sidelines the coach shouted, “You’re terrific!!!! Sign up for the season and I’ll see that you get a huge bonus!” “Forget the bonus,” the turkey said, “All I want to know is, does the season go past Thanksgiving Day! ~Author Unknown

Recipe Box

”Gobble, Gobble”
‘Housekeeping in Old Virginia’
Here is a recipe from an old recipe book of the above noted title by Marion Cabell Tyree. It was first published in 1879 and included recipes from 250 famous Virginia families. Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes, wife of the President of the United States and Mrs. M.R. Waite, wife of the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court felt this cookbook an absolute necessity in the kitchen.

Roast Turkey, with Truffles
Truffles must be peeled, chopped and pounded in a mortar: one and a half pound will do for one turkey. Rasp the amount of fat bacon and mix with the truffles and stuff the turkey with it. This dressing is usually placed in the turkey two days beforehand, to impart its flavor to the fowl. Lay thin slices of fat bacon over the breast of the turkey, cover it with half a sheet of white paper, and roast two hours. Chestnuts dressed in the same way as truffles are found an excellent substitute.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories About Real People

~~Presidential Turkeys~~

I am featuring an author, Andrew F. Smith, on the 10th of this month. His book, ‘The Turkey, An American Story’ is all about fascinating history on this amazing bird. The following details are taken from his book and the annuals of history. I know you will enjoy this as much as I have.

There is information about how this unique bird was the gift to presidents and it seemed to have started in the 1800’s. For the sake of space I will begin with February, 1856 when J.M. Matthews bought a live, thirty-four-pound turkey from Ralph H. Avery of Wampsville in Madison County, New York. The bird was presented to James Buchanan at his inauguration. Apparently Mrs. Buchanan chose not to eat the bird as it was observed roaming the White House garden. Mr. Avery reported that his turkey served “as a member of the ‘kitchen cabinet’”.

By the 1860’s, various people sent choice turkeys to the president for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner and inaugurations. Mr. Avery sent a “Monster turkey” directly to President-elect Abraham Lincoln just in time for his inauguration in 1861, and Henry Vose of Westerly, Rhode Island, sent a turkey to Lincoln in 1863.

No one knows for sure, however, it is suspected that Mr. Vose’s turkey may have created the magic that evolved a special incident that has been shared over the years with many. According to Noah Brooks, a newspaperman and friend of Lincoln, the president was given a turkey in 1863 that his ten-year-old son Tad befriended and named Jack. When it came time to prepare Jack for the Christmas meal, Tad burst into one of his father’s cabinet meetings requesting that Jack be spared. Lincoln agreed. On election day in 1864, Lincoln saw the turkey at the polling place at the White House and asked his son, “What business has the turkey stalking about the polls in that way? Does he vote?” “No,” Tad replied, “he’s not of age.” President Lincoln loved his sons quick-witted response and took pride in re-telling the story, which has been often repeated in various forms ever since.
