“An aim in life is the only fortune worth finding;
and it is not to be found in foreign lands, but in the heart itself.”
~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Risk is a four letter word that for many instantly stimulates feelings of fear. It means to expose ourselves to chance of injury or loss. A synonym for risk is venture. It means to undertake an action that involves uncertainty as to an outcome. You take the risk of; brave the dangers of; undertake to express yourself when opposition or resistance appears likely to follow. Another words, you dare.
I’ve just returned from a couple of business trips. During my travels I had the opportunity to chat with a number of people who have overcome tremendous obstacles in their lives. This is the story of Susan.
My flight to Anchorage had ended and we were in the process of waiting to get off of the plane. Susan had been sitting behind me during the flight. Her presence and calm, soothing voice while she was talking with a fellow passenger conveyed qualities that you don’t often find in people. She was thoughtful and attentive while listening to the other person. Our conversation started while we were waiting for our turn to get off the plane. I asked her if this was her first trip to Alaska and she said no. This was her second trip. A few months earlier she and her family had come to Alaska for a visit and there was such a strong pull for her to come back that she decided to come alone. “You see, I am going through chemotherapy and this trip is for me. Coming to Alaska has been a dream of mine and I have signed up for a week at a lodge that offers gourmet cooking classes along with accommodations at a beautiful lakeside cabin resort. I’ve never done anything alone like this before and I am so excited! I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to it.”
A guest on one of my shows last week said that there were three words that had changed her life. They were spoken to her by a friend who said, “I have cancer.” She said, “I realized that I had just been ambling, bumbling along with my life and not reaching for, accomplishing those things close to my heart.”
When was the last time you stretched and reached for a dream, looked at your possibilities? It is so easy to get stuck in complacency and fear. We get so comfortable in what we know that even if we don’t like it we stick with it as it seems to be safer.
There isn’t a day of our lives that isn’t filled with risk of one type of another. That’s life. To pick up the gauntlet of opportunity and move with it takes a willingness to dare. You don’t need cancer to force the wake up call. You just need to take one step then another and another towards your dream.
Dig into your minds’ closet of dreams and desires that you have closed the door on. Dust off some of them and see what means the most to you and start working on them. Bring them into the light of today and realize you have had these dreams in your minds’ closet for a reason.
Fall is here. Much of nature is preparing to sleep through the long winter that is coming. This is a great time to reflect, examine and determine what you want to do to stretch and reach for your possibilities.
Go ahead, dare to dream, imagine and start those steps to move forward with those changes you so sincerely desire.
The magic of transformation lies within you. Stretch and reach out for your unlimited greatness. This is the season for new beginnings.

A good piece of chocolate has about 200 calories. As I enjoy 2 servings per night, and a few more on weekends. I consume 3,500 calories of chocolate in a week, which equals one pound of weight per week.
Therefore…In the last 3 1/2 years, I have had chocolate caloric intake of about 180 pounds, and I only weigh 155 pounds, so without chocolate, I would have wasted away to nothing about 3 months ago!
My finding - - - I owe my life to chocolate. Submitted by M. S. Alaska

Recipe Box
Halloween Goodies
Sugar & Spice roasted Pumpkin Seeds
1 cup pumpkin seeds, 1 Tbls melted butter, 1 Tbls sugar, or more to taste, 1/2 to 1 tsp nutmeg, 1/8 tsp allspice……….Preparation: Rinse seeds well and get as much of the pumpkin pulp off of them as possible. Some of the small pieces are going to adhere, but they won’t hurt the seeds at all, and might even add a little more flavor. Pat dry with paper towels. Don’t let them dry completely on the paper towels, as they might stick.
Toss seeds with the butter, sugar, and spices. Heat oven to 300 degrees. Spread coated seeds in a shallow baking sheet (you can line baking sheet with nonstick foil to make cleanup easier) turning from time to time, for about 45 to 60 minutes, or until nicely browned and crunchy.
3/4 cup all purpose flour, 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup cooking oil, 1/4 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 2 large eggs, powdered sugar…….Preparation: Combine flour, sugar, vegetable oil, milk, vanilla and eggs: beat until smooth. Pour batter into a plastic squeeze bottle with a narrow opening, or use a pastry decorating bag with a small opening. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat until hot; lightly grease.
Working quickly, squeeze batter to form 4 straight, thin lines which intersect at a common center point to form a “star” shape. To form cobweb, squeeze thin streams of batter to connect lines. Cook 30 to 60 seconds or until bottom is golden. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen 4-inch cobweb cookies.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
There was a woman, Miss Jones, who was an elderly spinster. The oldest resident of her Midwestern town the day came when she died. The editor of the local paper had to write her obituary and found he was having difficulty doing so. During her lifetime she had never spent a day in jail or been seen intoxicated. She had never done anything noteworthy and he was wondering what he would be putting in his column about her. Trying to figure out what he should say he went over to the local café to get a cup of coffee. While he was there he met the owner of the tombstone company, who was just as perplexed as the editor as to what to write about Miss Jones.
So the editor returned to his office and assigned both the obituary and tombstone epitaph to the first reporter he saw, who happened to be the sports editor. This is what they put on Miss Jones’ tombstone.
Here lies the bones of Nancy Jones
For her life held no terrors.
She lived an old maid. She died an old maid.
No hits, no runs, no errors.
If we don’t try, we don’t do…if we don’t do…we can’t bless others. Give your best always. It’s your best shot at scoring in the game of life. ~Author Unknown
