It’s here! The holiday season has truly arrived. I know that because not only is it the first of December but I finally…well, almost…got the decorating completed in our home. Traditionally it is the Thanksgiving weekend when the decorating begins and I usually have it all done by the beginning of December. It is a lot of work but worth doing as it creates such color and vibrancy for the entire season.
While I was decorating our tree I wondered… where did all of this tradition come from? So I started to explore some old books and discovered that the tradition of using trees for celebration began a very long time ago. It seems that in Northern Europe, centuries before the Middle Ages, people believed that trees especially evergreens and fruit bearing types were homes for powerful spirits of nature. They were loved, respected and used in their celebrations during the fall and winter months of the year. It was in the sixteenth century that German families started including evergreens in their home decorating for the holiday season. By the seventeenth century the tradition was so well established that decorating with cookies, candies and various other items became the norm. Christmas trees and our decorating habits as we experience them in America today didn’t get adopted by the general population until the early 1900’s. It is amazing how our traditions evolved from a base of such simplicity from centuries past.
Every Christmas holiday has its own special memories. One popped out of my mental file cabinet that I thought I would share with you this season. It was 1978. Recently married, my husband, daughter and I had moved to Oakland, California. My husband had just been hired for a management job with a truck line and we were living on the grounds of the truck terminal. As like so many other young couples we were stressed and anxious about many things we couldn’t control. How could we deal with this Christmas when there was so little to work with financially?
After we had moved to the house on the terminal grounds we had decided we would plant a tree in the barren adjacent yard which was right along side the primary driveway into the terminal. Eighteen wheel rigs would drive into this driveway all day and evening long hauling their loads into the gigantic parking area located in the back side of the terminal grounds. The living room of the home had large sliding glass doors that faced directly out to this busy area. We thought having a tree would block the open view into the house and vice versa. That however, wasn’t to be. We had abnormally warm weather, the soil was poor and without the right support our tree died. After it died we forgot about it and left its dead skeleton right where we had planted it. Oddly the needles on the branches didn’t fall off they merely turned a dull brown creating a lifeless illusion of what had been a hope for something greater.
A few days prior to Christmas we were doing some brainstorming about the holiday when my husband suggested we paint the dead tree green and decorate it with lights. I thought it was a great idea and that is exactly what we did. Once painted amazingly the tree looked alive. Not only did we have lights but we also found some decorations that would withstand the outdoor weather. By the time we finished that tree looked fabulous. At dusk we turned on the lights and the total effect was magical. Every night until January 2nd the ‘dead-living tree’ was turned on and left on throughout the night.
Drivers coming in from their long hauls loved it and so did the trucking staff. So many of the drivers were away from home during the holiday season transporting products and materials around the country and our painted, decorated dead tree brought a lot of smiles, joy, and holiday spirit to those who saw it as they drove into the otherwise drab terminal.
So it was that with a little imagination, work and creativity, combined with homemade sweet holiday goodies our Christmas was happy and fulfilled with love, good fellowship and of course today provides a rich memory of a special time in our lives.
May you and all who you love enjoy the brightness and heartfelt joy of this holiday season for it truly is time for celebration no matter what ones cultural background may be. Our ancient ancestors recognized the gift of life and so should we.
Happy Holidays everyone and warmest wishes from our house to yours.

Power Thought for December
“We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, overtime, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.” ~~Marion Wright Edelman
(~.~) December's Chuckle (~.~)
The sound of laughter ringing through the church made it impossible for me to keep playing the organ. “What was going on?” I asked the pastor afterward.
He simply pointed to the hymn typed in the church bulletin.
It read: “Sin, choirs of angels, sin in exultation.” ~Diane Haley

Recipe Box
…………………Buried Cherry Cookies”
If you love baking for the holidays and want something new to try this cookie recipe is fabulous and perfect for gifts, especially for those chocoholics you love, including yourself. I have to tell you that these are cookies that get better as they sit in the cookie jar but if you household is like mine you’ll be lucky if you have any left after they have been baked! These are 5 Star cookies.
Ingredients: 1 (10 ounce) jar of Maraschino Cherries (42-48), 1/2 cup butter, 1 cup sugar,1/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4teaspoon baking soda, 1 egg, 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla, 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 1/2 all purpose flour, 1 (6 ounce) package (1 cup) semisweet chocolate pieces and cup sweetened condensed milk or low-fat sweetened condensed milk.
Directions: drain cherries, reserving juice. In a medium missing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer at medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Beat until combined scraping sides of bowl. Beat in egg and vanilla until combined. Beat in cocoa powder and as much of the flour as you can with mixer. Should there be any remaining flour use a wooden spoon and stir it in until blended. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls about 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Use knuckle or thumb to press an indentation into center of each ball. Place a cherry in each center. For frosting, in a small saucepan combine chocolate pieces and sweetened condensed milk. Cook and stir over low heat until chocolate is melted. Stir in 4 teaspoons reserved cherry juice. Spoon 1 teaspoon frosting over each cherry, spreading to cover (frosting may be thinned with additional cherry juice if necessary). Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool. Note: Do not substitute imitation chocolate pieces.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
A good friend of mine, Mary Ellen, put together a book called ‘A Christmas Filled with Miracles’. I, along with a number of other people, told those personal stories that were meaningful in our lives. This is one of the stories included in her book.
Christmas Angel
On Christmas Eve, my friends and I helped to prepare dinner that would be served on Christmas Day at a local shelter. We returned to the shelter on Christmas Day to sing carols while the shelter’s men, women, and a handful of children enjoyed their Christmas dinners.
Later, the excited children, from toddlers to young teens, clamored for a place in line to receive toys from Santa Claus. There was a small girl among them, looking lost, bewildered, and alone in the crowd. She was about my grandson’s age, three years old; she was neatly dressed and her hair was beautifully braided. I picked her up and held her in my arms. I noticed her eyes were blank. There was no light in them, no joy, no excitement, not even any recognition of what was happening around her. I found a baby doll for her. To my surprise, she did not reach for the doll or respond to it in any way. I held her close, rocked her, and quietly sang to her; I wondered what this child had experienced to make her eyes so vacant, so unresponsive, so joyless. Eventually and very reluctantly, she reached for the doll and lovingly held onto it. She wrapped her other arm tightly around my neck and rested her little head on my shoulder as I continued to gently rock her and sing to her. She sank into my arms, relaxed, and seemed content to be held and to rest. A sense of peacefulness came over me.
~~Author Unknown We stood there for some time until the children began to leave. When I found her family, I placed her in her mother’s arms. I learned she was one of eight children and her name was Angel. Miraculously, on this Christmas Day, Spirit/God/All That Is had placed an Angel in my arms to guide me into my heart, ho help me understand more about myself and to me teach how very blessed I really am.
