Legacy"

“The life you lead is the legacy you leave.”   ~Author Unknown

Legacy – a gift of property, personal or money; anything handed down from the past as from an ancestor or predecessor.

Conversations can evolve into unique and thought provoking stimulation that can change your thinking and your life.   That is what happened with four women who met one afternoon at a local restaurant to do some brainstorming about a project they were involved with.

Once the ‘Hi’s’ and ‘How are you’s’ were said, a bit of small chit chat about family and frustrations were voiced, then conversation quickly got down to the business at hand. They discussed the project details, made their criticisms and suggestions, resolving all that needed to be done and delegating the necessary duties as required.

A waitress comes to the table asking if she can take their order.  The women agreed that they were ready for some hot coffee and a sweet treat to go along with it.  Once their orders were placed conversation started up and then stalled while the waitress served them their choices of sweet treat and a cup of coffee.  Out of the blue one of the women posed a question. “What kind of a legacy do you want to leave?”  Surprised, everyone became quiet as the question flipped them into a totally different mindset.

The women looked at each other thoughtfully and one responded, “I don’t know.  I have never given it much thought.  What makes you ask such a unique question?”

The woman who presented the question said, “A couple of things have happened to me.  One, a family member died recently.  Hardly anyone was at her funeral and that was because she was such a nasty soul.  Second, I watched this week on television an individual who spoke about leaving a legacy and he wasn’t referring to money.  His question to his audience was, “Are you living your life in such a way that when you are gone people will remember you for who you are, an example of the very best you could be?”  He talked about quality of character, living with purpose, having community with others.  It really got me thinking when he also asked, “How would you like your obituary to read?”  I have to tell you that these two recent events really brought me into a mental space I hadn’t experienced before.  What would your legacy be?”

All of the women thoughtfully sipped their hot coffee, talking in between small bites of their dessert.  You could tell their minds were in fourth gear thinking about this question, and their conversation became very animated.  All too soon their two hours of designated meeting time was up.  However, they resolved to think about and then discuss what their legacy should be at their next meeting.

How would you have responded to the question?  What is your legacy going to be?  When are you going to start doing something to see it realized?  How do you want to be remembered?  What qualities of character would you want recognized and appreciated?

To me it is all about the story.  Perhaps that’s what I love so much about what I do whether it is speaking before a group, interviewing and sharing information about authors on the radio or doing private counseling.  You see,

I believe the legacy is your story.  Your life, your dreams-achieved or unachieved. How have you dealt with challenges, your successes?  How would you like your story to be told?

When we live our lives with purpose, staying consciously aware and present in the now giving our best we are writing our script for our legacy.   We can choose to be positive and productive or we can be negative and destructive.  The richest legacy we can leave is one of example.  Being true to yourself and living with integrity, your purpose and action speaks volumes.

Everyone has a story.  Every one of us will leave a legacy. What will yours be?  Now’s the time to choose, after all it is your destiny. Donna Seebo

Power Thought for June

“A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our world; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before we changed.”   ~~Earl Nightingale

(~.~)June's Chuckle (~.~)

When we finished a personality assessment at work, I asked my friend Dan if he would share the results with his wife. “That would require me to go home and say, ‘Hi, honey. I just paid someone $400 to tell me what’s wrong with me,’” He said. “And based on that, considering we’ve been married 23 years, she’d hand me a bill for $798,000.”

My Father

When I was….

Four years old: My daddy can do anything.
Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot.
Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad.
Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything.
Ten years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were sure different.
Twelve years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood.
Fourteen years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad. He is so old-fashioned.
Twenty-one years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date.
Twenty-five years old: Dad knows about it, but then he should, because he has been around so long.
Thirty years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he's had a lot of experience.
Thirty-five years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad.
Forty years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so wise.
Fifty years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was. I could have learned a lot from him.

Recipe Box

Lemon Tart with Walnut Crust

This yummy recipe is perfect for a hot summer day.  Easy to make, it can be served cold or at room temperature.  This recipe makes enough dough for two crusts.  If you like you can save one crust for a later time by freezing it.

Ingredients

1⁄2 cup walnuts, chopped and toasted lightly in a dry skillet, 12 tablespoons butter, slightly softened, 1⁄2 cup confectioners’ sugar, 5 large eggs, 1 3⁄4 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1⁄2 cup plus 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (2-3 lemons), 1⁄2 cup heavy cream

Directions

Grind walnuts finely.  Beat butter and confectioners’ sugar on high till light and fluffy.  Add 1 egg; mix.  Add flour; mix on slow till just combined.  Add walnuts; scrape sides of bowl till dough comes together. Divide dough. Wrap half in plastic; refrigerate 2 hours. Wrap and freeze other half for future use.  Heat oven to 400 degrees.  Lightly oil 9 1/2-inch tart pan.  On lightly floured surface, roll dough into a round about 1/8-inch thick.  Arrange in pan; trim to fit. Line crust with foil and weight with beans.  Bake until edge is light golden brown, about 20 minutes.  Remove beans and foil. Bake until bottom is dry and light brown, about 5 minutes.  Let cool.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk 4 eggs.  Add sugar, lemon juice and cream.  Whisk to combine. Strain mixture and pour into pie crust.  Reduce oven to 325 degrees.  Bake tart until filling is set, 25-30 minutes.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories About Real People

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at the age of 76, which is odd, because he always looked to be 76.  He was born June 27, 1927.

The following story is of two men whose paths crossed in a fascinating manner that I believe you’ll find interesting.

Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buried in a grave alongside three and four star generals at Arlington National Cemetery.  His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC).  Nothing else.  Here’s a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys?  Well the following is the amazing answer.

I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn’t know the extent of his Corp experiences. In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero.  He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima.  There is only one higher naval award…the Medal of Honor.  If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.

Dialog from “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson.  His guest was Lee Marvin.  Johnny said, “Lee, I’ll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.”

“Yeah, Yeah…I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi.  Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting shot hauling you down.  But Johnny at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew. We both got the cross the same day but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison.  That dumb guy actually stood up on Red Beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach.  Bullets flying by with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety.  He did this on more than one occasion because his men’s safety was more important than his own life.

That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me. I was lying on my belly on the litter and he said, “Where’d they get you Lee?”  “Well Bob.. if you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!”

“Johnny, I am not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew.  The Sergeant’s name is Bob Keeshan.  You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo.”
