Just the other day I was sitting in my car and trying to get it to start. My gold key was in the ignition but the mechanism was jammed. Frustrated all kinds of thoughts were going through my mind. “Oh boy, I wonder if I am going to have the ignition replaced?” That thought and many others quickly ran processed as I kept trying my key and nothing was happening.
My husband was sitting in the passenger side. He reaches into his pocket and gets out his keys. “Here,” he says, “try my key.” I do and the engine activates and ‘walla’ everything is running beautifully. “Donna, there is nothing wrong with the ignition. Your key is old and worn out. That’s why it won’t work. Let’s go.”
Later that day I pulled out the golden key set I had received when I bought my Cadillac in 1988. Examining it closely I discovered that the key I had used tens of thousands of times truly was worn out. Its edges had worn away and could no longer make the proper contact in the ignition. I thought about the warning signs I had experienced during the last few months when the ignition wouldn’t start up right away and how I ignored them as eventually the engine did start. Even with the warnings it never crossed my mind that the key itself was the problem. I had made assumptions about the growing problem that were incorrect.
How many times have we had solutions that were right in front of us yet due to our experiences, belief systems we have adopted or conversations with others, we can’t see them? Whew ~~ When I reflect on my own life I can recall a number of times that my own ignorance and lack of experience caused me to walk a difficult road of challenges.
The gold keys I had been carrying on my key chain represented a level of accomplishment for me. However, as with just about everything in life, they have their limitations. They were worn out and needed to be replaced. That was an absolute. As I tossed them into the recycle bin, having replaced them with a new set on my keychain, I realized a lesson had been presented.
It has been said that the epitome of stupidity is when you keep doing the same thing over and over, getting the same results, yet you expect things to change somehow. If something isn’t working it isn’t working just like the key.
Life is so fluid. Old fears, belief, attitudes, all need to be examined with thoughtful attention. When red flags are popping up warning you something is going wrong - pay attention. What outdated, worn out factors exist in your life that you need to examine and throw away? What will you replace them with?
Since everything begins with a thought if there is some change that you need to bring about in your life and affairs and don’t know how you can do it…why not ask? Ask for assistance. Inquire from different people as to what they might do if they were in your place. Their suggestions may or may not resolve your dilemma. “If you don’t ask, you don’t get” Is an old axiom yet so true.
Regardless of age, economic status or location you have options to work with in all situations. However, you are the only one who can reach for them. Rarely are they given to you on a silver platter. If they are you are the one who has to accept and use them. No one can or will do it for you.
If your golden key in life has become worn and needs to be replaced don’t be concerned. Look for the truth, deal with it, get a new key and turn on your ignition of action and move forward. Remember, without a driver no key turns and the driver also determines the direction taken. So buckle up, relax and get ready for your next adventure in this experience of life.
Happy traveling.~ Donna Seebo
Power Thought for September
"When you paint success pictures in your mind, you initiate an inner process whereby your attitudes, hopes, aspirations, and enthusiasm are elevated in response to an image of a more promising future. Every person who aspires must first sell themselves hope,
the promise of a better life."

Following his motivational talk at a Weight Watchers meeting, my father noticed one client’s small son climbing onto a scale.
“Don’t go on that, Joey,” warned the boy’s slightly older brother. “It makes people cry.”

Apache Seasons
There was an Indian Chief who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly so he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.
The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall. When they had all gone and come back he called them together to describe what they had seen.
The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent and twisted.
The second son said ‘no’ it was covered with green buds and full of promise.
The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.
The last son disagreed with all of them, he said the tree was filled with ripe fruit and drooping from the weight of it all. It was full of life and fulfillment.
The Chief then explained to his sons that they were all right because they had each seen but only one season in the tree’s life. He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end when all the seasons are up.
If you give up when it’s winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, the fulfillment of your fall.
Moral: Don’t let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest. Don’t judge life by one difficult season. Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time.

Recipe Box
- A Touch of Chocolate - Chocolate Pretzels
Ingredients: ½ cup sweet butter, 7 Tbls. superfine sugar, 1 egg, 2 cups all-purpose flour, ¼ cup unsweetened chocolate
Directions: Lightly grease a cookie sheet. Beat together the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg. To Finish: 1 Tbls. butter, 3 ½ ounces dark chocolate, confectioners’ sugar to taste.
Sift together the flour and unsweetened cocoa and gradually beat in to form a soft dough. Use your fingers to incorporate the last of the flour and bring the dough together. Chill for 15 minutes.
Break small pieces from the dough and roll them into thin sausage shapes about 4 inches long and ¼-inch thick. Twist into pretzel shapes by first making a circle and then twisting the ends through each other to form a letter “B”.
Place the pretzels on the prepared cookie sheet, slightly spaced apart to allow room for spreading during cooking.
Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F for 8-12 minutes. Allow the pretzels to cool slightly on the cookie sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Melt the butter and chocolate in a double boiler, stirring to combine.
Dip half of each pretzel into the chocolate and allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the pretzels on a sheet of baking parchment and allow to set.
When set, dust the non-chocolate coated side of each pretzel with confectioners’ sugar before serving.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
Give up on dreams? Not this young man, he’s an inspiration to anyone who is willing to read his story.
In Louisville University there was a quarterback that dreamed of playing pro football. Upon graduation, however, no pro team was interested in him. So, no drafts. He didn’t give up on his dream. He wrote to a number of teams and finally got an opportunity to try out for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He gave his very best with his entire self but didn’t qualify. His friends said, “You got a raw deal..it wasn’t meant to be..I guess it’s time to hang up your cleats.” But this young athlete didn’t give up. He continued to knock on doors and send out letters. Finally, he received another opportunity but again, didn’t qualify.
Most of us would have given up long before this point, but not Johnny. He was passionate about his dream. He had played sandlot football from the time he was a young kid. He just couldn’t give up. So, patiently and persistently, he continued to pursue try out opportunities. Finally he was invited to try out for the Baltimore team…and he made the third string! Through on going training and many long, long hours of drills and fitness building, he worked his way up to be starting quarterback. Johnny became one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play in the NFL.
Who was he? Johnny Unitas.
