Robins are hopping about on the ground looking for worms and other tasty morsels for snacking; Canadian geese are flying in formation, honking as they go; Mother Nature is starting to push up flowers out of what was frozen ground just a few weeks ago and trees are budding with new growth. Spring is a wonderful time of the year. Everything smells so fresh and clean. It is time to get outside and refresh the mind, body and spirit.
Today while I was talking with my guest Tim Hurson, author of ‘Think Better’, we discussed an experiment that was done by a man, Jean Henri Fabre, who is noted as being the father of modern entomology. Jean loved to watch nature and truly felt nature was a superb teacher. He decided to observe ‘processionary caterpillars’. Have you ever heard of them? I hadn’t. The story is an interesting one.
On January 30, 1896, Jean put together an experiment. He coaxed a chain of caterpillars around the rim of a large pot that he had filled with earth. Once he had enough caterpillars on the top rim of the pot he encouraged the lead caterpillar to close the circle on the top of the pot. When he did that there was no leader and each caterpillar in the circle followed the caterpillar in front of them without any hesitation. Now the caterpillars’ favorite food was inside the pot. These caterpillars continued moving around the top of that pot for 6 days never once changing their pattern of movement. Only when some began to fall over from lack of food and water did the others find the food that was placed so conveniently within their reach.
Jean Henri Fabre said, “The caterpillars in distress, starved, shelterless, chilled with cold at night, cling obstinately to the silk ribbon covered hundreds of times, because they lack the rudimentary glimmers of reason which would advise them to abandon it.”
Hm,m,m,m….I wonder if there is a genetic link between humans and caterpillars?
Okay, I realize that is a bit of a reach in thinking but how many times have we continued to do the same thing because we couldn’t figure out or wouldn’t invest the time in exploring options for ourselves to do things differently? How frequently have we been concerned about being outside of the norm? How often is conformity demanded when uniqueness or variety should be considered with our thinking and our actions?
Spring is a great booster to the spirit after the long, cold months of winter. This is a perfect time for airing out not just the house with spring cleaning but also taking some time for the self to examine opportunities to expand our parameters of expectation, thinking and action not just in professional capacities but in our personal expression as well,
Will Rogers said it best, “It’s not what you don’t know that hurts you. It’s what you do know that ain’t so.”
Stand up, step out and start exploring new beginnings. It’s the perfect time, right now, to do it. Enjoy the season’s beauty as well as its gifts.

Every new senior class at our school brings with it a new senior prank.
Recently, a group of students let three pigs loose inside the school.
They were labeled Pig #1, Pig #2 and Pig #4.
School officials quickly rounded up the three pigs but
spent the rest of the day looking for Pig #3.

Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening it deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day.
What would you do?
Draw out ALL OF IT, of course!
Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME.
Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds.
Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.
Each day it opens a new account for you.
Each night it burns the remains of the day.
If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours.
There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success!
The clock is running. Make the most of today.
To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade.
To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby.
To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train.
To realize the value of ONE-SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident.
To realize the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver medal in the Olympics.
Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time.
And remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present!

Recipe Box
Skillet Lasagna Primavera
Spring has arrived and who wants to spend lots of time in the kitchen when you can be out in the garden or better yet enjoying the additional hours of daylight by doing outdoor activities. Still having a hearty meal at the end of a busy day is very satisfying and here is a dish that is easy, quick and oh so good!
Ingredients: 2 pkgs. (16 oz. each) frozen vegetable mix, including broccoli, red peppers, onions and mushrooms, 1 cont. (15 oz.) ricotta cheese, 1 egg, 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, 8 oz., 1⁄4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1⁄4 cup chopped fresh parsley, 1⁄4 tsp. pepper, 1 jar (16 oz.) Alfredo sauce, 12 oven-ready lasagna noodles broken into thirds.
Directions: Cook vegetables according to package directions. Drain; reserve 1 cup vegetables for top. Meanwhile, in bowl, mix ricotta, egg, 1 cup mozzarella, Parmesan, parsley and pepper. Pour Alfredo sauce into another. Stir in 1 1⁄2 cups water. Layer ingredients in skillet. Spread 3⁄4 cup sauce in 12” skillet; top with 12 noodle pieces. Cover with 3⁄4 sauce, half of cheese mixture, half of vegetables, 12 noodles and 3⁄4 cup sauce. The top with remaining cheese mixture, vegetables and noodles; cover with remaining sauce and top with reserved vegetables.
Cover skillet; bring to simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low; simmer until noodles are tender, about 30 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup mozzarella; cover and cook until cheese is melted, 5-10 minutes.
**Donna tips Spray skillet with non-stick cooking spray for easier cleaning of pan prior to assembly of sauce, etc. Also try this recipe with Marinara sauce if you don’t like white sauce. You can also stick this dish under a broiler for just a minute if you would like more of a crispy golden look to your dish.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
I was sent this story by Debbie and I just have to share it with you. It is about a very special eagle named Freedom and a man called Jeff. Their relationship is one in a million.
“Freedom and I have been together 10 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. She could not stand; her left wing was broken in four places. Emaciated, she was covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life so I took her to our vet’s office. From then on I was always around her. We put her in a large dog carrier with the top off, and it was full of shredded newspaper for her to lie in. I used to sit and talk to her urging her to live, to fight. She would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We had to tube feed her for weeks.
This went on for 4-6 weeks and even then she was unable to stand on her own. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she wasn’t going to be able to stand in a week. It was not pleasant to feel that death was winning the battle. It looked like we were going to have to put her down on the following Friday afternoon. I went in on Thursday expecting the worst and when I walked in everyone on staff was grinning from ear to ear. I immediately went to her cage and there Freedom was standing on her own two feet and I was just about in tears. It was a very good day.
We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to glove train her. I got used to the glove and then to jesses and we started doing education programs in schools in Western Washington. Soon we were featured in newspapers, radio shows and some television. Miracle Pets even did a program about us.
In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I was stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere else) so I would up doing months of chemo. I missed a lot of work. When I was feeling good enough, I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom often would come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened often.
In November 2000, the day after Thanksgiving, I went in for my checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after 8 rounds of chemo then my last option was a stem cell transplant. They did the tests and the following Monday I had to return for the results. My cancer was gone.
The first thing I did was to get up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold. I prepared her for her flight, jessed her up and we went out to the top of our hill. I hadn’t said a word to Freedom but somehow she knew what had happened to me. She wrapped both her wings around me to where I could feel the tip pressing in on my back. I was engulfed in eagle wings. Then she touched my nose with her beak and stared into my eyes and we just stood there like that for I don’t know how long. That was a magic moment. We have been soul mates ever since she came into my life. This is a very special bird.
