Millions of us are cleaning, decorating, cooking and buying in preparation for this very special time of year. As I walk around my neighborhood with Victor and Kenzie colored lights begin to illuminate winter’s darkness and strange faces are appearing on trees that have white beards and big eyes. Bright red bows are tied around pillars and posts of homes and mailboxes adding additional cheeriness. Yes, there is a magic in the air that wisps around and about capturing your heart, mind and spirit. It is a wonderful, happy time.
A few of the many things I enjoy during the holiday season are the films/programs that come out during this time of the year. Films like ‘The Miracle on 34th Street’. While reflecting on these various programs a parable popped into my mind. It’s called “Truth & Story”.
“Two women were walking down a street having a vibrant conversation. What was the topic? Who is more beautiful? One’s name was Truth and the other’s name was Story. They were challenging each other and decided to let the people around them tell them who was the most beautiful.
Truth volunteered to be first. Walking down the street she went into stores, met people and they responded with silence. Too frequently they turned away from her as if she was repulsive. Very disappointed she walked back to Story and said, “I think I would have gotten a better reception if I was naked but perhaps that is not the truth”. She was very discouraged and sad.
Story said, “Now it is my turn.” And she walked down the same street. People turned and greeted her, welcoming conversation. Everywhere she went she was welcomed warmly. In time, she returned to Truth.
Truth says to Story, “Well, it is obvious you win this contest and you are the most beautiful.”
Story responds, “Truth, no one likes truth especially naked truth. Here put on my cloak and see what happens.”
Truth puts on Story’s cloak and she finds that people welcome her warmly where they didn’t before. “Ah,” she thinks to herself, “that is the secret. We both are beautiful. Stories shelter Truth.
During this time of year we all have stories to share and people to share them with. There are always those personal stories that touch the heart and especially move the spirit; that is what so much of this season is all about. The film ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ tells about commercialism, a busy life, dealing with lack and limitation but showing how openness, love and especially faith and right action can turn what seems to be the worst of situations into a harmonious, healthy and loving reality for all concerned.
Whatever your story is know that you have the power to take its form and style and make it into whatever you like this holiday season. I wish for you and for all those that you hold near and dear in your heart the happiest of holidays. Feast, celebrate your blessings and share your joy for yours is a special gift that only you can give.
Happy Holidays to all.

Power Thought for December
“The best Christmas gift of all is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up with one another.”
~~Author Unknown
(~.~) December's Chuckle (~.~)
Last Christmas morning, after all the presents were opened, it was clear that my five-year-old son wasn’t thrilled with the ratio of toys to clothes he’d received. As he trudged slowly up the stairs, I called out, “Hey, where are you going?”
“To my room,” he said, “to play with my new socks.” ~~Rick Burns, Arkansas
Sign of Peace
The purest dove of winter white
Sought refuge from December night.
Into a stable warm he fled
And nestled near a manger bed.
A tiny hand touched feathers warm
And both slept soundly in the storm.
There came a whisper soft as fleece
“You too shall be a sign of peace.
My Son will show a way of love
When men seek refuge like the dove.”
~~ Mary Ann Bohrs Linder ~~

Recipe Box
Eggnog
This is a holiday drink that is so wonderful and traditional for the holiday season. Here is a bit of history regarding this winter beverage and I am also giving a couple of recipes that I believe you’ll enjoy.
Eggnog is an American drink with English ancestry. The word eggnog is English. Nog is a shortened version of the word noggin which was a small drinking vessel with an upright handle. The noggin was commonly use for a particular ale which eventually was called nog. How did the egg connect with the nog? Well, there was a milk-and-egg drink called sack-posset that had been enjoyed by the English for centuries. Sack-posset was for a long time made with the addition of ale or sack, a dry wine from Spain. Now how did rum become strongly associated with the sack-posset concoction? Who knows! Today eggnog comes ready made in our grocery stores, even in low-fat versions. However, if you are the type of person that likes to make yours fresh, hot or cold, remember to always use the freshest of ingredients and you’ll thank the hardy English for this holiday beverage.
Version #1….Standard Eggnog
Ingredients: 1 egg, well beaten; 2 teaspoons sugar; 1 cup milk or 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup light cream; 1/4tsp. vanilla; Nutmeg, grated.
Directions: Beat together all ingredients, except nutmeg. Pour into tall glass and sprinkle with nutmeg. Makes one serving.
Version #2….Christmas Eggnog
Ingredients: 3 egg yolks; 3/4 cup sugar; 1/4 tsp. salt; 3 cups milk; 1 cup heavy cream; 1 Tbls. sherry or rum (extract can be used); 3 egg whites; grated nutmeg.
Directions: Beat egg yolks; gradually add 1/2 cup of the sugar and the salt, beating constantly. Gradually add mild and cream. Cook over hot water, stirring constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat a spoon. Cool. Add sherry or rum; chill. Beat egg whites until stiff; gradually add remaining sugar, beating constantly until stiff. Fold into thick custard. When ready to serve, pour into chilled punch bowl; sprinkle with nutmeg. Makes 2 quarts, or sixteen 4-oz. servings.
***Donna Note….If you are like me and watching the calories during the holiday season, use non-fat or 1% fat milk, stevia or your favorite non-caloric sweetener, egg-beaters and non-fat cream for the single serving portion.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
The gift of love comes in many costumes and settings. I came across this story and felt it was so special that I had to share it with you.
Is there any place where we can borrow a little boy three or four years old for the Christmas holidays? We have a nice home and would take wonderful care of him and bring him back safe and sound. We used to have a little boy, but he couldn’t stay and we miss him so when Christmas com. N.M.
As I read the above appeal in our local newspaper something happened to me: for the first time since my husband’s death I thought of grief as belonging to someone else. I read and reread the letter to the editor.
Some months before, I had received word from Washington that my husband had been killed in service overseas. Grief-stricken, I had taken my little son and had moved back to the tiny village of my birth.
I’d gone to work to help support my son and time had helped to erase a few scars in my heart. But there were special times when the ache would return and loneliness would engulf me. Birthdays, our wedding anniversary and holidays.
This particular Christmas the old pain was returning when my eyes caught the appeal in the newspaper column. ‘We used to have a little boy, but he couldn’t stay and we miss him so….’
I, too, knew what missing was, but I had my little boy. I knew how empty the sparkle of Christmas is unless you see it in the joyous eyes of a child.
I answered the appeal. The writer of the letter was a widower who lived with his mother. He had lost he beloved wife and his little son the same year.
That Christmas my son and I shared a joyous day with the widower and his mother. Together, we found a happiness that we doubted would ever return.
But the best part is that this joy was mine to keep throughout the years and for each of the Christmases since. You see, the man who wrote the letter, months later, became my husband. ~~Mrs. N.H. Muller
I have been invited to participate in a special book promotion on the 18th of November with Amazon.com. A special email will be sent out to make you aware of the book promotion, the unique gifts and discounts that will be offered. My children’s book will be included in this promotional action.
