I was at a birthday party recently and one of the guests asked me, “How do you come up with a new topic each month for your newsletter?” I said, “I just start writing about what is going on around me and whatever pushes my mental button for story material that’s what I use.” His response, “Wow, I could never do that! It would be too great a challenge for me to write something new each month as you do.”
This month my inspiration was my clothes dryer. Don’t laugh…it’s true! I had just finished emptying out the dryer, folded the clothes and automatically reached for the removable filter that has to be emptied after each load of laundry is finished. As I was cleaning it I realized I have to clean this filter in this machine regularly to avoid the dryer overheating and possible catching on fire. If the filter is not cleaned out regularly, the machine becomes too hot as the air for the drying process is blocked. Consequently the machine can’t do its job well and can cause a fire hazard.
A filter partially obstructs the passage of that which is deemed inappropriate to allow through. It occurred to me that there is an analogy here not to be ignored. We as human beings have lots of self developed filters in our minds and if we don’t pay attention those filters can create a damaging effect that can handicap us in unbelievable ways. We all have experiences, environments that have helped us to become the individual we are today. However, sometimes those experiences create mind lint that clog the process of becoming more of what we are capable of being. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why you like certain things; why certain situations make you uncomfortable; why you have adopted particular habits that you really don’t want but continue with because…… well, just because?
Have you ever admired someone and after noting what they have accomplished you say to yourself, “I could never do that!” I know I have. What is at work here is a filtering process, one of many that all of us have and all too frequently never pay attention to. There comes a time to clean out the mental lint that has built up and clogged up our potential. This takes being consciously present with ourselves. No one can do it for us as we are the only one who can know what is going on in our mind’s machine and that takes willingness and courage to explore; to discover the blocked filters that perhaps we didn’t know were impeding our mind’s circulation for growth and development.
Napoleon Hill is one of my favorite teachers. He had a particular experience that made him very aware of his own personal filters. He had been speaking before a large group. When he finished one of the members came up after the talk to congratulate him on his wonderful program. The gentlemen extended his hand in a gesture of friendship. Napoleon started to reach out and suddenly felt an intense revulsion, pulled his hand back, then turned around walking out of the room leaving the stranger standing alone without knowing what was wrong.
When he got into his hotel room, Napoleon Hill was appalled at his behavior. The man had done nothing to him that should have caused his offensive actions. What was the trigger? Upon deep reflection a memory from t he past popped in. It was one about his father. His father had always detested Masons and spoke many times to Napoleon that they couldn’t be trusted. Then it all became clear.
As Napoleon went over the details of the day’s event he realized that when the stranger extended his hand he was wearing a Mason’s ring. He had responded to a stimulus filter that had been programmed into his subconscious when he was young and it took this particular experience to make him aware that his response to the man had been totally unconscious. It was a lesson that taught him to pause before allowing impulse to govern him without examination first of the facts.
Mental lint clogs our thinking on so many levels. To expand our own potential, to develop and polish talents in a new or more refined way, we have to examine the filters we have come to depend on. Are they in need of a cleaning? Do we need to discipline ourselves in different ways? Should we challenge beliefs, processes that have been in place for a long time to seek something better? Just because something has been done a particular way for a hundred years doesn’t mean that it doesn’t need an update or replacement.
Every generation has its own particular challenges and today’s world is not lacking for opportunities to meet them. As spring is approaching it is a good time to do a mindful examination of what mind filters we haven’t examined for a while and see if they are in need of a change or even just a good cleaning out. After all, isn’t life all about living with clarity and purpose?
Today is the first and very best day of your life. Life it with joy, zest and love.

Jeff’s blind date with Suzanne was bad from the start in short, they loathed each other. Fortunately, Jeff had asked his friend to call him so he’d have an excuse to leave if the date wasn’t going well.
When his friend called, Jeff pretended to be in shock. “I have to leave,” Jeff said to Suzanne. “My aunt just died.”
“Thank God,” Suzanne replied. “If yours hadn’t, mine would’ve had to.”

Recipe Box
Chocolate Cherries
February is a month when sweetness prevails and the gift of chocolate is ultra special. Chocolate on Valentine’s Day is the language of love and this recipe is just perfect for that special person in your life. Not only is it sweet, it is easy. Enjoy and Happy Valentine’s Day.
Ingredients: 12 candied cherries, 2 Tbsp rum or brandy, 9 ounces marzipan, 5 1/2 ounces dark chocolate, extra milk, dark, or white chocolate, to decorate (optional)
Directions: 1) Line a cookie sheet with baking parchment. 2) Cut the cherries in half and place them in a small bowl. Add the rum or brandy and stir to coat. Set the cherries aside to soak for a minimum of 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 3) Divide the marzipan into 24 pieces and roll each piece into a ball. Press half a marinated cherry into the top of each marzipan ball. 4) Break the chocolate into pieces and melt in a double boiler. 5) Dip each candy into the melted chocolate, allowing the excess to drip back into the pan. Place the coated cherries on the baking parchment and chill until set. 6) If desired, melt a little extra chocolate and drizzle it over the top of the coated cherries. Let set.
Additional tip: 1) Flatten the marzipan and use it to mold around the cherries to cover them, then dip in the chocolate. 2) Use a whole almond in place of the halved candied cherries and omit the rum or brandy.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
For all of you sweethearts out there here is a touch of wisdom that you can hold in your hearts.
The story is told of a couple at their 50th wedding anniversary celebration. The happy couple was surrounded by their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends. A toast was proposed by one of the guests during the event. He asked the wife, “What is the secret to a long and happy marriage?”
With a loving glance toward her husband, she answered: “On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband’s faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook. I figured I could live with at least ten faults.”
Another guest, this time a woman, asked, “What were those ten faults you choose to overlook?” The husband looked a bit uncomfortable at the thought of having his weaknesses and flaws revealed to friends and family. However, his wife sweetly replied, “To tell you the truth, dear, I never did get around to listing them. Instead, every time my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would simply say to myself, lucky for him that’s one of the ten!”

Valentine Traditions
Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was:
Good morning to you, valentine;
Curl your locks as I do mine ---
Two before and three behind.
Good morning to you, valentine.
In Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gift on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.
In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.
Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a millionaire.
A love seat is a wide chair. It was first made to seat one woman and her wide dress. Later, the love seat or courting seat had two sections, often in an S-shape. In this way, a couple could sit together -- but not too closely!
Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, Then, as you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.
Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have.
If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.
