Well, here we are another New Year. New opportunities await all of us as well as challenges. What shall this year bring? What goals old or new do we want to achieve? These questions and perhaps many more we need to ask ourselves to determine our priorities. It is fascinating how, depending on changing circumstances, we can shift and move into entirely new directions never dreaming the new horizons we can explore. It is a tradition of renewal on so many levels and another holiday to spend with family and friends enjoying good food, conversation and watching parades on television and the Internet around the world.
When I was doing research on New Year’s Day I found that it is the oldest of all holidays. To the best of our current knowledge the Babylonians celebrated their New Year with the first New Moon after the Vernal Equinox the first day of spring. What a perfect time to have a holiday as it is the season of rebirth, blossoming of various plants, trees and flowers and the planting of new crops. When the Babylonians partied it was for eleven days. Thank heavens our celebration is only for one.
When did the traditional date of the holiday change? 153 BC. It was the Roman senate that decided January 1st would be the beginning of the New Year. And so the tradition of celebration was continued for hundreds of years. During the Middle Ages the Christian Church opposed this ancient tradition and so the Western part of the world has only been enjoying New Year’s festivities for the last 400 years.
Apparently resolutions were a part of the tradition even back in the days of the Babylonians. The most popular one was returning borrowed farm equipment. My times have changed! One of the most popular in today’s world is losing weight. Regardless, working with resolutions is a time honored tradition.
The word ‘resolution’ is a significant one as it is a formal expression of opinion or intention. It means resolve, determination, firmness of purpose, solution, accommodation or settling of a problem. Sometimes situations, conditions and challenges of various types follow from the old year into the new. To determine how we want to resolve these variables it is good to have some quiet time to think through new tactics and decide what choices we desire to work with and those we choose to discard.
There is a tradition that I was introduced to over 30 years ago that I think is quite special. It is called the ‘Burning Bowl Ceremony’. Perhaps you have heard of it or even participated in it. It is a good way to release the past and get on with the present. If you haven’t experienced it this is what you do. You get a bowl and put dirt or sand in its bottom and place it on a sturdy surface. Then you take some paper and pen, write out what you desire to have cleaned up and out of your life, and then write those changes that you want to see manifested. When you are finished you place the paper or papers into the bowl and with a match set them on fire. As you watch the paper burn you know and accept the release of the old and the manifestation of the new conditions desired. You can do this celebration with your family and friends or all by yourself. Many churches have incorporated this simple ceremony into their services finding that people really enjoy the tradition. It is a great way to release old mental/emotional baggage that you don’t want to carry anymore.
Whatever you do, however you spend New Year’s Day, I wish you a most prosperous, healthy, joyous and adventurous New Year 2008. May your hearts desires be fulfilled in magnificent ways.

Power Thought for January
Each is given a bag of tools, A Shapeless mass, A book of rules;
And each must make, Ere life is flown, A stumbling block Or a stepping stone.
~~R. L. Sharpe
(~.~) January’s Chuckle (~.’)
A half grown country boy was sitting on a log at the edge of a beautiful inland lake in a Southern state. He was lazily watching his fishing line bobbing in the water.
A car drove past, then stopped. Several men, tourists, looked over the fresh-looking, inviting water of the lake. One of them said to the boy fisherman: “Son, are there any snakes in this lake?”
Said the boy: “No suh, no snakes in this lake.”
The men peeled off their clothes and went in for a swim, and for half an hour they swam and splashed in the cool water. When they came out, one of them had a thought, and he said to the boy: “Son, how come there are no snakes in this lake?”
Said the boy, with a half grin: “Because the alligators done et them all up.”

Recipe Box
…………………Meusli
One of my resolutions is to be more aware of healthy eating habits. Here is a recipe for cereal muesli that a client gave me many years ago. This lady had decided that she wanted to add fiber to her diet and put together this unique combination that she enjoyed for breakfast on a daily basis. She even packed this dry muesli mix to take with her when she traveled locally or around the world. Let me know what you think of it.
1 cup of sunflower seeds 1 cup pumpkin seeds ½ cup sesame seeds ½ cup flax seeds ½ chia seeds 2 TBLS psyllium seeds. Choose your favorite juice, pineapple, apple, orange, etc. Add juice as needed to cover the seeds. As they absorb the juice, keep adding more until the seeds no longer need any additional liquid. Let it sit for 12 hours in your refrigerator. A quarter of a cup of the soaked seeds is a serving. Enjoy.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
“AULD LANG SYNE”
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
And here's a hand, my trusty friend
And gie's a hand o' thine
We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
Do you ever wonder where this famous New Year’s song originated?
“Auld Lang Syne” is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the New Year. At least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. Burns himself said that he took down the basics of the lyrics from ‘an old man’s singing’ and he found out it was an ‘old song of the olden times’.
An old Scottish melody, "Auld Lang Syne" literally means ‘old long since’ or simply, ‘the good old days’.
