June was a bit hectic with almost two weeks of travel. However, one of the gifts that partners with traveling is meeting new people, hearing their stories and learning new things about the places you visit. This particular journey was no exception.
While in Portsmouth, Virginia we decided to visit a local museum which at one time had been a courthouse. After passing through their entrance of double doors of glass I walked up to the oversized front desk to pick up our tickets for the exhibit of kites on display from around the world. Sitting behind the massive wooden form was a woman of mature years. Her name was Martha.
As I was waiting for my husband to join me we started chatting about the weather, which was horribly hot and humid, then the conversation turned to politics of the day. Now, I typically don’t choose to get into that subject matter but due to the flow of the conversation Martha decided to share a very personal experience she had many years before in Washington D.C.
It was 1960 and she was working for a company near the nation’s capital. On this particular day as she had left the office and was walking towards the Library of Congress when she found that streets were blocked with security police. She stood on a corner trying to determine what direction to take when a young man walked up to her. He said, “You look like you are lost ma'am, can I be of assistance?” She looked up at him and explained her dilemma. He then said, “Come with me.” and taking her arm proceeded to escort her through the heavily guarded area. They were just about to cross over to the Library of Congress when two military officers stopped them and saluted sharply. Martha’s thoughts became frantic, for sure they were going to be arrested walking through all of this security without identification or authorization.
The gracious stranger spoke to the officers saying, “Gentlemen, escort this young lady to the Library of Congress, wait for her to finish her business there and then escort her back to where she needs to go.” After their response it was then she realized that her caring escort was John F. Kennedy. She turned to him and said “It’s not nice to scare a person like that.” John Kennedy just smiled, shook her hand and left. She told me that because of this event she voted for him to become President for she felt that a man who had cared to help a stranger was a man who would care about his country and the people in it.
Martha is currently 79 years old and as vibrant as one should be at that golden age. As a black woman she has seen many changes in her life in culture, social structure and working opportunity. Strong, independent and self sufficient she represents to me a history that few people know about, especially with a former President of the United States.
This summer should you have the opportunity to travel be sure to take time to talk and listen to people you meet; you have no idea what you’ll discover or what new friends you’ll make in the process. There are a lot of Martha’s to get to know. Have a fabulous summer.

Freedom is not merely the opportunity to do as one pleases; neither is it merely the opportunity to choose between set alternatives. Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them -- and then, the opportunity to choose. ~~C. Wright Mills

Recipe Box
Stuffed Mushrooms
Ingredients: 30 Large mushrooms, 1/2 med. onion chopped fine, 1 lb. cheddar cheese-grated, 1/2 lb. ground beef, 1 1/2 cup bread crumbs, garlic powder (to taste), 1 1/2 tsp. thyme, Ramino cheese, 1 can cream mushroom soup, 1/2 cup water.
Directions: Saute onions in butter, add ground beef, and cook until crumbly. Remove from heat, add bread crumbs, cheddar cheese, seasonings and finely chopped stems from mushrooms. Stuff the caps, place in lightly greased 13X9” casserole dish, pour soup over mushrooms and sprinkle with Ramino cheese. Cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 20 min.
Donna Tips: If you don’t like ground beef, use shredded beef and chop into small pieces or substitute meat of your choice. Sausage is great - just cook well to render out the fat before mixing with other ingredients. You can use cream of celery or any creamed soup of choice. Cheddar cheese soup adds a different flavor and you can also try different cheeses and seasonings. This is a delicious dish that can be made vegetarian if you like and is perfect for those summer meals when you want something light, flavorful and attractive to serve to guests. Enjoy!

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
Stories that inspire are always very special. With the 4th of July coming up I felt that this one was especially meaningful. Freedom is never earned without sacrifice, determination and perseverance as Everett Alvarez, Jr. will show you.
Everett was at a Toastmasters’ Club meeting and as part of the training he had thirty seconds to prepare a spontaneous five-minute speech for his group. As he got up from his chair and was walking to the podium his mind was quickly searching for his topic. By the time he reached the podium he was ready. He spoke to the group telling them about a very special day in his life when he was searching through a neighbor’s trash for empty glass soda bottles to turn in at the corner grocery store for a penny each.
All day, he searched through trash looking for bottles; filling his wagon up to its brim, then going to the store to turn them in. By the end of the day he had a small mountain of coins, enough to buy a card and a candy bar. They were to be a surprise birthday present for his mom. When he finally got home he found his mom red-faced with anger. Angry questions poured out of her mouth, “Where have you been? I’ve been searching everywhere for you! How could you not be home on time?”
While she was questioning him, Everett started to cry. With tears streaming down his face he choked out through his tears, “I was collecting bottles to get you these.” He handed her the unsigned card and the candy bar that had nearly snapped in two in his pocket. Almost immediately his mother started to cry herself as she took the items from his sweaty hands. After giving him a loving hug, she then placed them on a window ledge so all of her neighbors who passed by would see what her wonderful son had done for her.
Now Everett’s speech really touched the hearts of his audience, some had tears in their eyes. His audience was a very special one it was a group of fellow prisoners of war at the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison camp in North Vietnam. His five minute speech gave them hope and the understanding of why they were where they were and the sacrifice they were making for freedom. It was one of many that helped them to survive those years of suffering with purpose, conviction, determination and faith.
