Life can sometimes be wild and wacky. That has been the case for the last two weeks and mischevious computer gnomes have been hard at work. Not only was my PC affected but also my laptop. Getting this newsletter out on time wasn’t possible and the work I had done couldn’t be accessed. So it was I decided to rewrite this editorial from scratch.
I happened to be cleaning out a part of my office closet area and found a small green storage box that I hadn’t opened in years. Inside were all kinds of articles I had saved and this one I am going to share with you is one of them.
~~“Gold Glitter in Maryland Ponds”, Los Angeles Times, August 1978 ~~
Some ponds glitter with gold as hundreds of thousands of baby goldfish scoot through the water. Others appear to be made of the finest silk printed with water lilies.
You’re in Lilypons, considered one of the biggest and the second oldest goldfish farm in the United States.
Next year, Lilypons expects to distribute 12 million goldfish for feed, pet shops and backyard water gardens.
From Lily Pons Road it appears just another farm with a large building n the center. But at closer inspection, visitors who flood the place during summer weekends find tiny fish and lilies of all shades bringing the ponds to life.
The goldfish farm was the brainstorm of George L. Thomas Sr., who used to give away to passersby the water lilies that grew wild on his Adamstown dairy farm, said his grandson, Charles, who now runs the business.
When he realized he could grow the fragile flowers for profit, he set up business in 1917. Nine years later he bought 300 acres of land and built five ponds. Today there are 425 ponds with 117 acres of water, said Ken Niles, who helps run the operation. Of the ponds, 400 are homes for baby goldfish and the rest are used for water lilies and lotus.
Most visitors think the town of Lilypons was named for the business, but Thomas said his grandfather was infatuated with the opera soprano and sought her permission to name the town in her honor.
Thomas said goldfish business flourished during the Depression.
“I think one thing is that money was tight,” he said. “It takes a lot more money to feed a dog or cat than a goldfish. Families were moving in together and it was easier to have a goldfish for a pet because it doesn’t bark, or need to be walked or disturb other people.”
As he explained his business after World War II, the elder Thomas began distributing his products to Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The fish were transported in giant metal cans aboard the train that passed through Adamstown.
In the 1950’s, George Thomas Jr. perfected a method of transporting fish in polyethylene bags which gave them a better chance of survival. “My father has the patent for shipping goldfish in bags.” Thomas said.
I decided to look up Lilypons, Maryland and to my delight I found that not only is there a fabulous website but they now have 1,800 acres of land with 400 acres of ponds still in place and ship out 70,000,000 ornamental and bait fish and hundreds of thousands of water-lilies and other aquatics every year.
Who would have ever thought that goldfish would have spawned such a thriving business that today reaches around the globe? If you have a chance, take time to visit Lilypons, Maryland on the Internet. Not only do they have more information about their history but also how they are working environmentally to make a difference in water gardening. What a legacy George L. Thomas, Sr. has left the world.
March is the beginning of my favorite time of the year. Spring is a symbol for rebirth and new opportunities. What better time is there to step up and reach out for what you earnestly desire, reaching for those dreams you hold in your heart? Let your imagination soar and your spirit sing to the music of your choice.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, Happy Easter and Happy Spring everyone.

Recipe Box
German Apple Pancakes
With the Easter holiday coming up you might want to serve something extraordinary to your family and guests. This is a fabulous recipe that my family and friends have enjoyed immensely. You can cut the recipe in half if you are serving 4 people. Otherwise this is for 8 people, making 2 large pancakes.
Ingredients: Batter 8 extra large eggs, 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour (5 ounces) 2 Tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 2 cups milk, ¼ cup (1/2 stick) butter-melted, 2 teaspoon vanilla.
Fruit mixture: ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, 1 1/3 cups sugar (9 ½ ounces), 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, 2 large tart apples, peeled, halved, cored and thinly sliced (2 cups).
Directions: For Batter Combine first 6 ingredients in mixing bowl and blend with spoon or electric mixer until smooth. Add melted butter, vanilla and nutmeg and blend. Let batter stand at room temperature for 30 minutes or in refrigerator overnight.
For fruit mixture: Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 425 degrees. Divide butter evenly and melt in two 10-inch ovenproof skillet, brushing butter up sides of pan. Remove from heat. Combine sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and blend well. Sprinkle 1/3 cup over butter in each skillet. Divide apple slices and layer evenly over butter. Sprinkle remaining sugar mixture over apples.
Place skillets over medium-high heat only until mixture bubbles. Divide batter evenly and gently pour over apples. Transfer skillets to oven and bake pancakes 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 375 degreet and bake an additional 10 minutes. Slide onto heated serving platters, cut into wedges and serve.
Donna’s note: Sometimes people like maple syrup with the pancake and there are times I have just served it in the pans the pancakes are baked in. If you allow the pancakes to rest for about 3-5 minutes they will cut easier.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
Helping the deaf to communicate was Alexander Graham Bell’s deepest motivation for the work of his life. Why? His mother and wife were deaf. “If I can make a deaf-mute talk,” Bell said, “I can make metal talk.” He worked diligently for five very difficult years, experimenting with all kinds of materials drying to make a metal disk that, vibrating in response to sound, could reproduce those same sounds and send them over an electrified wire.
It was during a visit to Washington, D.C., he met with Joseph Henry, a scientist who was a pioneer in research related to electricity. Alexander presented his ideas to him and asked what he would recommend that he do with them. Should he pursue his concepts on his own or would it be better to find someone to help him? Dr. Henry said, “Do it yourself.” Alexander responded with complaints saying he didn’t have the knowledge of electricity. Dr. Henry said, “Get it!”
So Alexander Graham Bell did what was suggested and a year later when he obtained his patent for the telephone, the officials in the patent office praised him for knowing more about electricity than all of the other inventors they were aware of.
Donna note: Much of the technology we enjoy today is due to Alexander Graham Bell. I wonder what he would say about cell phones, the Internet and the exploding technology of today’s world?
