Synchronicity is fascinating. I was working on this newsletter. The editorial for the month was prepared, ready to go. I had just typed in the quote, heard a tone that email had arrived and decided to shift into my account to see what had come in. Upon opening mail I found a delightful story from one of my readers, M. Hannon, and thought “This is too good to pass up”. It was a perfect compliment to this month’s quote, so I tossed my editorial aside and I am sharing his story instead.
A lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.
The lecturer responded, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case it’s the same weight but the longer I hold it the heavier it becomes. That’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time sooner or later as the burden becomes increasingly heavy we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we are refreshed we can carry on with the burden. So before you return home tonight put the burden or work/life down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested.”
“Life is short. Enjoy!”
What a wise teacher. The story is short, to the point and powerful in its essence. It especially hit home with me as just within these last couple of weeks I have had news of friends and clients dying of cancer, deaths of various people’s family members, financial crisis’s hitting some individuals who thought they had every thing perfectly planned out and now are dealing without their financial cushion and much more.
Any of us at any given time can find ourselves overwhelmed. I don’t know about you but just looking at the clutter in my office can stress me out when I see all of the papers, books and other materials piling up. Have you ever noticed that the more you work under a high stress level the less you accomplish? Now don’t get me wrong, there are times when high stress is an important motivator for action. I’m talking about the fact that if one doesn’t take time for breaks creativity for problem resolution isn’t there; you will find yourself going in circles feeling overwhelmed, under productive and exhausted.
We have entered into a wonderful time of the year - Fall. As the temperatures are cooling give yourself a gift; the gift of relaxation and quiet time. Appreciate all of your blessings; enjoy visiting with friends and family; appreciate yourself, your talents and know that whatever stresses exist in your life they will pass and life will move on with its own unique momentum. Looking at life as a glass half full instead of half empty makes a difference. Living in the present is what creates the richness life has to offer.
The teacher is right….”Life is short. Enjoy!”

Power Thought for October
“One day at a time this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone: and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come.
Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.”

Candied Apples
October is the time of year when the temperatures get chillier, the daylight shorter and the stores are loading up with preparations for one of the most delightful holidays of the year Halloween. Candied apples have been a tradition for many people, especially at Halloween carnivals, for many years. Here is a recipe that you may want to try for those crisp, delicious apples that have just come out. It’ll bring out a lot of memories and the kids can help you fix them.
Ingredients: 8 of your favorite apples, 2 cups sugar, 8 craft sticks, 1⁄2 cup light corn syrup, 3⁄4 cup water, 1/8 tsp cinnamon, 10 drops red food coloring.
Directions: 1. Cover a baking sheet with waxed paper; set aside. Wash apples, removing stem; insert a craft stick into bottom of each apple; set aside. 2. In a heavy medium saucepan combine sugaar, corn syrup, and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat stirring to dissolve sugar. Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pan. Reduce heat to medium and cook, without stirring, until thermometer regosters 295 degrees F to 300 degrees F (hard crack stage), about 30 minutes. 3. Remove from heat; stir in cinnamon and red food coloring. Dip each apple in mixture and coat well; let excess drain off. Transfer to waxed paper lined baking sheet to cool. Best served same day they are prepared. 8 servings

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
During one of my recent business trips I was reading an airline magazine. One of the articles was about an amazing woman, Sister Madonna Buder, who is from Spokane, Washington. She is an ‘Iron Woman’. She is awesome with her demonstration that you are never to old to start doing something others will say is impossible and perhaps stupid for your age.
Sister Buder started doing triathlons in 1982. She had competed in marathons and running races prior. Since 1985 she has traveled to Kailua-Kona, on the big island of Hawaii almost every year to participate in their annual event and has become an icon for the sport. She is the only woman older than 75 to actually finish an Ironman race. Currently 78 years of age she is determined to be the oldest Ironman finisher ever. She’ll meet her goal I’m sure.
What determination, perseverance, and a love for a goal can do is amazing regardless of age but Sister Madonna Buder shows us that once we make up our minds, put the foot to the metal pedal and start doing, momentum will take us forward.
