THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER~ September 1, 2008
A Moment with Donna © " The Shift "

Have you ever arranged a schedule and found that within 30 seconds all your perfect planning has evaporated into thin air? I find it an amazing experience and through the years have found a good sense of humor comes in handy.  That’s when the mantra “Everything works out for the best” is good to say out loud with enthusiasm and force a smile with those lips that are pressed together as you anxiously figure out your options. Sometimes having a closet you can put yourself into for a few moments, be sure to close the door, to have a good scream is good too.  A friend recommended using a pillow to yell into if one is extremely frustrated.  That way no one will call the police out of concern.

All kidding aside dealing with unexpected upsets can be quite stressful as you have to come up with options, choices, to resolve concerns.  That is where the ‘shift’ comes in. What do you give your attention to? What is important and what isn’t?  What is manageable and what is not?

Example – Your whole day is laid out with appointments and your car dies in your driveway.  You manage to make some phone calls to make schedule adjustments; you get your car to the shop and they are to arrange a rental for you. The shop figures out the problem, orders the parts and the wrong ones arrive so they can’t fix the car. You won’t have your vehicle in time for you to do what you need to do. Not only that, the rental car wasn’t ordered; this is stress level 101 or is it?

Life is about living – not running away from problems, challenges or obstacles.  No one and I mean no one goes through life’s roads of experiences without hitting super size pot holes once in a while. The one thing you do have control over is your thinking and responses to those unexpected sink holes when they show up. Here are some tips that may help when you feel overwhelmed.

·         Take a deep breath and ask yourself - what are the facts? No embellishments, just facts about the situation?
·         If you need help ask for it. Let others know what is going on and they may have some options for you to consider.
·         Punt. Don’t be afraid to take action. Remember deciding to do nothing is still a decision to do nothing.
·         Giant steps of action may not be necessary. Small steps allow you to evaluate as to the proper direction to take for the best results.
·         Be patient with yourself and others as you may find that mistakes have occurred and adjustments are necessary.
·         Don’t let mental anxiety overwhelm you as this too will pass.

Quality of life is important.  Quality is empowering. When you focus on that perspective creating the shifts necessary seem to be achieved easily. Whether it is retiring from a job, dealing with a sick member of family, whatever the challenge may be making adjustments can be easier when you realize you are the sunshine of your life. You’re in charge of your choices. The key is adapting when necessary and smiling along the way.

This month school starts, schedules get intense and after a summer of easy going times one can feel stressed out and overwhelmed. Adjustment is the word for September. Smooth shifting into a different gear is an everyday necessity. You can do it. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Good times are yours right now.                                                                                                                 Donna Seebo

Power Thought for September

“Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or other.  If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger, and will make, not only our own happiness, but that of the world at large.”    ~~Mahatma Gandhi

Recipe Box

This month I am featuring something for those beloved canines that always seem to crave crunchies like dog biscuits.  If you are like me you want to be sure that those biscuits are healthy.  Here is a recipe that was featured in one of my author’s books, “The Healing Power of Olive Oil” that I just had to pass on. Her source for the recipe came from www.knowbetterdogfood.com. Here are two variations.

Liver Dog Biscuits Cheese Dog Biscuits

                  Ingredients:

3 cups oat flour ,1⁄2 cup pureed fresh liver (beef or 1 cup grated Cheddar cheese, chicken) or 1 Tbls. Dessicated liver ,1 egg,  2 Tbls. Olive oil,    Water to moistenor broth to moisten

Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, add all the ingredients.  Mix well, form into a ball, and roll out to a ¼” thickness with a rolling pin. Cut into desired shapes, place on cookie sheets, and bake in preheated oven for about 30 minutes or until well browned.  Turn off the oven, leaving the biscuits in the oven until cooled.

These biscuits can be frozen, but keep well for a couple of weeks if they are very dry and crisp.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories about Real People

Problem solving is a skill we all have to develop. This story is about a woman who through her astute powers of observation and skilled listening met a challenge that needed quick resolution.  Her name is Anita Glasco.
At the Rainier School for the mentally disabled in the state of Washington, tens of thousands of mosquitoes, flies and other insects had invaded the entire 500-acre facility.  Inspectors stated that the condition presented serious health hazards and the school was cited.  The year was 1989.
When Anita heard about the situation she recalled that in 1988 these same inspectors had cited the school over a sanitation problem.  Birds were the culprits as their droppings were covering the sidewalks. Due to this citation many bird’s nests had been removed. As a member of a local garden club she remembered hearing one of their speakers talk about how swallows eat large number of insects.  So Anita, a school counselor, approached the administration suggesting that the residents in the school’s vocational-education program build birdhouses and place them at the perimeter of the acreage to attract swallows. They thought it was a great idea!
Within a few weeks the birdhouses were built, installed and swallows accepted their new homes enthusiastically.  The bug problem diminished quickly.  The birdhouses were so successful that additional ones were made by the residents and sold to pay for the materials and also to reward the workers.
Amazing what a little bit of resourceful thinking will do.
