Power Thought for April

“It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable.”

A Moment with Donna
….Two Camels

Winter storms are whipping their way through the Pacific Northwest.  Leaves, boughs and pine cones cover the ground.  The dull grey skies have no visible horizon and we are living up to our notorious reputation of ‘it’s raining or it’s going to rain’.  Many of us are wondering if Spring is going to grace us with her happy presence as we walk outside with winds smacking us from every angle. We are definitely ready for warmer temperatures and clear sunny skies.  Old Man Winter is fighting hard to keep his place but every once in a while the grey splits apart and a golden glow breaks through brightening everything up.  It is then you know that Spring is just around the corner.

Meanwhile Mother Nature keeps on doing what she always does and that is to move ahead.  Rhodies are starting to bloom; Bright yellow daffodils with their happy faces sway in rhythm with the wind; and the cherry blossoms are budding out with their canopies of pink and white.  They lift one’s heart and fill the eyes with beauty that makes you forget the grey.  You realize how much there is to appreciate if you just take the time to pay attention to what is about you.

I came across this short parable and felt that with all of the conditions we are experiencing at this time it was an appropriate story to share.

**    ***   **

A master and a servant were crossing a desert.  They came to an oasis and decided to spend the night.  In the morning, they awaken to discover that their camels were gone.  The master said to his servant, “Where are the camels?”

To which the servant replied, ”Well, I just did what you always tell me to do.”

“What is that?” asked the Master.

“You always tell me to trust in Allah, so that is what I did. I trusted Allah would take care of the camels.”

“Ahh,” said the Master. “This is true. Of course, you must trust in Allah, but you must also tether the camels.”

**   ***   **

Tether your camels. To pay attention to what needs to be done, be vigilant, be responsible seems to be common sense, however, common sense doesn’t seem to be so common.

Life doesn’t come with any guarantees or entitlements other than we have the opportunity of choice as to how we choose to deal with it.  Resourcefulness is the tool that empowers us through changes expected and unexpected.

As an individual; as a part of a community; as a nation; or as a part of the global environment each of us can make a difference if we determine to give our very best in all that we do.  If we are willing to stretch ourselves into new dimensions of expression, learning and communication these blustery times will pass and we will move forward to new destinations of experience that can make this world a better place for all.

Spring is just around the corner and if we are mindfully present with what needs to be done today, tomorrow will take care of itself.

The Recipe Box –

Apple Spice Custard Cake

With Easter just around the corner you may enjoy fixing this ‘yummy’ cake.  It is easy, fast and oh – sooo
good!

Ingredients: 1 standard package spice cake mix, 2 medium apples, peeled and chopped, 1 (14-ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated millk), 1 (8-ounce) container sour cream, ¼ cup lemon juice, ground cinnamon (optional)

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare cake mix according to package directions.  Stir in apples. Pour batter into well-greased and floured 13X9-inch baking pan.  Bake 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean.

In a medium bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk and sour cream; mix well. Stir in lemon juice. Remove cake from oven: spread sour cream mixture evenly over hot cake.

Return cake to oven, bake 5 minutes or until set.  Sprinkle with cinnamon (optional). Cool.  Chill. Store leftovers covered in refrigerator.  Serves 12.

True Stories about Real People

We never know how we affect other people lives. This is a true story about David Brenner, a comedian, and a surprising encounter in San Francisco.

David was doing a book signing in San Francisco when a young man approached him asking him to autograph his book.  When David took the book, opened it and started to sign it the young man said, “I want to thank you for saving my life.”  Brenner just grinned and said, “That’s okay kid!”  The young man, with a serious face, said “No, I really mean it!”

David Brenner stopped what he was doing and listened to what the young man said next. “My father died.  He was my best friend.  I loved him and couldn’t stop crying for weeks.  I decided to take my own life.  The night I was going to do it I happened to have the television on.  You were hosting ‘The Tonight Show’, doing your monologue.  The next thing I knew I was laughing at your jokes and I couldn’t stop.  I realized that if I could laugh, I could live.  So I want to thank you for saving my life.”

A sincerely humbled and very grateful David Brenner said, “No, I thank you.”

ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE

Hi, all you animal lovers.

This is pretty simple and free... Please ask ten friends to ask ten others today!

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their web site daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals. It takes less than a minute (how about 20 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for nimals' for free. This doesn't cost you a thing.

Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned and neglected animals in exchange for advertising. Here's the web site!

Pass it along to people you know.http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/
PLEASE TELL Your Friends…Thank you!!!
