A Moment with Donna
…………Stubby
It's early morning and I am preparing this newsletter. Here in the Pacific Northwest the sky is clear, temperatures are warm and it is wonderful to be able to sit outside on the deck, having breakfast and enjoying the beauty of Mother Nature. Trees are painted with golden light as the sun is rises in the sky and a magnificent ethereal glow flows through the canopy of trees above me.
Quiet it is not. No, our neighborhood family of crows are fussing busily, squirrels are chatting as they scamper about and a variety of birds are chirping, warbling with each other planning their business of the day. Such are the dynamics of a Northwest summer morning.
Our Scottish Terrie, Victor, sits attentively on the deck watching a particular tree with focused attention. I wonder what he is observing and turn towards the tree. It's then I notice what has caught his fancy. There is a baby squirrel high up in the branches of a large fir tree. He seems to be having a problem with balance and soon I see why. He's lost part of his tail. Promptly I name him Stubby.
Stubby has adopted the highway system of trees in our neighborhood and frequents our yard. He is amazing to watch. Squirrels depend strongly on the strength of their tails for balance. We wondered if a raccoon, a hawk or some other creature had caught him by his tail and he managed to escape. Regardless, this little critter didn't let this stop him from developing squirrel skills and adapting to his disability. No, there was food to be gathered and work to be done for the upcoming winter and he is zipping through the trees with high speed not wasting any time doing what needs to be done.
Stubby is a great example of positive attitudes. He works with what he has and doesn't let his handicap stop him. He doesn't have time to wail over the cropped tail or the experience that created it, no, life is to be lived in the now. He had to learn how to develop a different way to balance so he could be about living and not be a victim.
We all go through, at one time or another, imbalances mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. We, if we are wise, readjust our bearings and move ahead with purpose.
Mother Nature is a wonderful teacher if we slow down enough to watch and observe what is going on around us. Stubby is a good lesson for all of us to think about. If a little squirrel can overcome his limitations in his limited world think of what you can do in one that offers infinite possibilities.
Summer is a great time to slow down and savor the richness of our blessings. If you can't appreciate what you have how can you appreciate opportunity when it knocks on your door? Take time to enjoy the now, breathe in the richness of Mother Nature and you may find her gifts giving wisdom to you in unexpected ways. You just never know what you'll find in your own back yard.
Have a magnificent August!

The Recipe Box Frothy Chocolate Milkshake
Yes, it is that time of year when ice cream is king on a hot, sizzling day. There is nothing more refreshing that ice cold milkshakes and if you are a chocoholic this is perfect for you. You can use dark chocolate for that extra rich flavor. I'll also share a chocolate soda recipe too. Enjoy!
Ingredients: Milk Shake -- 2 cups ice-cold milk, 3 TBLS chocolate powder, 3 scoops of your favorite chocolate ice cream, a touch of chocolate powder to sprinkle over shake when finished (optional).
Directions: Place half the ice-cold milk in blender; add the chocolate powder to the blender and 1 scoop of the chocolate ice cream. Blend until the mixture is frothy and well mixed. Stir in the remaining milk. Place the remaining 2 scoops of ice cream in 2 serving glasses and carefully pour the chocolate milk mixture over the ice cream. Sprinkle the chocolate powder over top and serve.
Ingredients: Chocolate Soda -- 5 TBLS chocolate desert sauce, soda water, 2 scoops chocolate ice cream, heavy whipped cream, favorite chocolate grated.
Directions: Divide the chocolate dessert sauce between 2 glasses. Add a little soda water to each glass and stir to combine the sauce and soda water. Place a scoop of ice cream in each glass and top up with more soda water. Place a large spoon of whipped cream on the top and sprinkle with a little grated chocolate.

True Stories about Real People
If you think there are some wild and wacky beliefs about nutrition you'll enjoy this bit of information that came across my desk regarding a king of Sweden.
Gustav III of Sweden believed that coffee was poison. To prove his theory, he sentenced a murderer to drink coffee every day until he died. To provide comparison, another murderer was pardoned on the condition that he drink tea every day. Two doctors were appointed to supervise the experiment and see who died first.
The doctors were the first to die. Then the King was murdered in 1792. Finally, after many years, one of the criminals died -- at the age of 83. He was the tea drinker.
I wonder if this was the origin of the 'double blind'study?

Summertime
Beach towels bright
In a sea of stripped, polka dot umbrellas
Leaning back, relaxing
Sand sifts between my toes
A deep breath of salty sweet air
The warmth of the sun envelops me
A cozy blanket
Dozing delightedly
My summer siesta!

August’s Chuckle
One evening after putting my four-year-old son to bed, I decided to apply a moisturizing facial mask. A little while later, my son came out for a drink of water-and seeing me, gasped. "Mama," he said, wide-eyed. "What is that?"
"It's a beauty mask," I replied, "to help make Mama pretty."
Taking another look, my son replied, "I'm sorry Mama but I don't think it is working!" ~~Rachel DeSoto, Toledo, OH
