THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER~ February, 2009
A Moment with Donna © " Inner Vision"

I’m sure you heard of the ancient Indian tradition of a vision quest.  Young men would be required to retreat to a lonely spot to endure days of hunger, cold and loneliness to experience their inner journey of self and purpose.  It took courage, a willingness to submit and the challenge to be open to the message of the Great Spirit.  It was part of the initiation into manhood.  This experience was to offer a gateway into maturation, meant to empower the individual through its message.

In our culture today we frequently use the word ‘vision’ to describe goals and objectives.  What would evolve if we used the word to connect with that inner shaman that we carry within ourselves and allow it to show us our true core of who and what we truly are?

I think of a story told to me years ago about a very successful executive, making a high six-figure income yet he was antsy, frustrated, unhappy and didn’t understand how this could be.  He had it all according to everything he had been raised to believe.

One day he received a call from a long time buddy who invited him to go on a canoeing trip that would take them into the Sierra Mountains.  Without knowing why he accepted the invitation.

It was a two week excursion.  At one point they spent days carrying a canoe through rough terrain. By the end of the excursion as they were packing everything up this man’s buddy wondered if his friend regretted the ruggedness of the adventure they had gone through.  To his amazement the executive told him he had never felt so alive.  In fact, it gave him clarity about what he wanted to do.

Within a few months the executive retired, deciding he would be an outdoor guide for people giving them the wilderness experience.  He left behind a posh job, all the perks and started a small tourist business that changed his life a hundred and eighty degrees.  To this day, to the best of my knowledge, he is still taking people on outdoor treks, hauling canoes when necessary and not making a whole bunch of money but is very happy with his life.

Why?  Why does someone just step away from what seems to be a perfect life to become involved in something that is as uncommon  as taking people on hikes?  Apparently it had to do with purpose and inner satisfaction and peace.  He discovered that what was fulfilling for him was being closer to nature and interacting with people differently.  He was a good enough businessman to understand the principles of running a business and making it successful.  His purpose and priorities changed because he wanted them to.  His vision of his life - his purpose -changed after having a significant experience that enabled him to answer his inner questions that he could not answer before.

Life can be a rat race if you let it.  However, it doesn’t have to be.  Sometimes like the executive when we are questioning where we are, why we are living the way we are and what we really want we have an experience that gives us the opportunity to reframe ourselves and shift into an awareness of what we know we need to do that gives us true purpose and value.

Vision is defined by Webster as: ‘the act or power of anticipating that which will or may come to be’.  It can happen in a moment or occur gradually over a period of time.  Regardless, when it occurs if we are true to ourselves we’ll hold that awareness like a precious jewel protecting it from the elements of despair, failure, disbelief until we can place it into the golden position of reality that we can wear proudly in everyday life.  We won’t just think about it we will live it.

As we travel through life our perceptions may change.  When they change we may have the opportunity to discern a different direction that may bring us into a whole new script of experience.  Trust your inner vision, your inner self…for the exploration of the unknown may bring your blessings beyond your dreams, new relationships and stories to share that will light the way for others to seek out their own inner vision.

Power Thought for February

My message to you is: Be courageous!  I have lived a long time.  I have seen history repeat itself again and again.  I have seen many depressions in business.  Always America has come out stronger and more prosperous.  Be as brave as your fathers before you.  Have faith!  Go forward.”

~~ Thomas A. Edison’s last public message

(~.~) February’s Chuckle (~.~)

A professor of obstetrics at an eastern university propounded to his class, “Who is happier, the man with six million dollars or the man with six children?”

One of the students had an instant answer, “The man with the six kids.”

“Why”, asked the professor.

“Because the guy with the six million always wants more!”         ~~ Author Unknown

Italian Chocolate Truffles

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and any excuse to have chocolate is a good excuse.  This is a sweet for that special sweetheart and you can make these truffles ahead so they will be ready for the holiday or any time you want to share them.

Ingredients: 6 ounces dark chocolate, 2 Tbsp almond-flavored Liqueur (amaretto) or orange-flavored liqueur, 3 Tbsp sweet butter, 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1/2 cup ground almonds, 1 3/4 ounces grated chocolate.

Directions: 1) Melt the dark chocolate with the liqueur in a double boiler, stirring until well combined. 2) Add the butter and stir until it has melted. Stir in the confectioners’ sugar and the ground almonds. 3) Leave the mixture in a cool place until firm enough to roll into about 24 balls. 4) Place the grated chocolate on a plate and roll the truffles in the chocolate to coat them. 5) Place the truffles in paper candy cases and chill.

A Poem for Lovers

Happy Valentine’s Day

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need; by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,--I love thee with the breath.
Smiles, tears, of all my life!--and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

GOLDEN NUGGETS

True Stories about Real People

This month we celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.  I will be doing an interview regarding the Lincoln family on February 12th.  I came across some information regarding him that I thought showed a man who knew how to laugh at himself.

Senator Stephen A. Douglas once called him a “two-faced man,” Lincoln responded, “I leave it to my audience.  If I had another face, do you think I would wear this one?”

There was another time when he was chatting with a group of editors about meeting a woman riding on horseback in a wooded area.  “She looked at me intently, and said, ‘I do believe you are the ugliest man I ever saw.’ Said I, ‘Madam, you are probably right, but I can’t help it.’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘you can’t help it, but you might stay at home.’”

So much focus was given to his appearance during his lifetime yet today he continues to be recognized for remarkable patience, determination, dedication, strong will, compassion, thoughtfulness and selflessness.

One of his quotes I like is “The fact is, truth is your truest friend, no matter what the circumstances are.”

Lincoln’s time was filled with conflict, anxiety, war and just about everything negative you could imagine yet he still made fun of himself, was caring about others and sincerely desired to leave a legacy that would inspire future generations. I wonder how he would view history’s memory of him? From what I have read I would imagine he would probably tell a joke about himself.
