Power Thought for July

“If you are ultimately going to do something important that will make a real difference, do it now.”

A Moment with Donna

…………Wilson

A couple of weeks ago my husband and I were driving through Hertford, North Carolina on New Highway 17.  We stopped and visited the old downtown historical area of Hertford, stopping in an antique store to browse around. My husband discovered eleven crystal goblets and I found a colorful tablecloth for an upcoming party.  After purchasing our items we decided we would ask some people if they knew how to get to Old Highway 17.  We were lost. We figured that the Old Highway couldn’t be far from where we were but oddly no one we asked could tell us how to get there.

            So off we went becoming - within a short period of time - very frustrated as we seemed to be driving around in circles and Map Qwest wasn’t a help at all. Finally we pulled into a driveway of a small mall section.  I got out of the car, taking my address book with me, and went inside the store we had parked in front of.  It turned out to be a state liquor store.  A woman with a tattoo on her left shoulder was sitting next to the cash register talking on her cell phone. An older man was shopping in the store that was otherwise empty.  I walked up to the counter and when the woman paused to ask me what I wanted. I told her about being lost and that we were trying to find Old Highway 17.  Cell phone in hand she immediately said to the person on line ‘Can you come over to the store?  There is a nice lady here who is lost and I don’t know how to get her to the Old Highway.”  Smiling, she then said, “That is a friend of mine who is a policeman.  He’ll know how to get you to where you want to go.  He’ll be here in a minute.”

            While we were chatting the older man walked up to the counter and asked me if I had the address on Old Highway 17.  I told him that I did and gave the address as well as the phone number.  He offered to let me use his phone to call the number I needed to reach.  After I finished with the call he said I know exactly where you need to go, why don’t I just take you there?  It’s only a few minutes away.  I was stunned.  Here I am a perfect stranger and this gentle man is offering to take us directly to our destination. Meanwhile the policeman arrived and heard the entire conversation.  I thanked the woman and the officer for their being so willing to help and accepted the man’s offer.

 It was amazing. He followed me out to our car and introduced himself to my husband and said, “Now, you just follow me and we’ll be there in no time.  And that is what we did. Within 10 minutes we were at the location we had been trying to reach.

When he got out of his truck, I got out of our car and walked up to him and thanked him for his help and his very kind manner.  To my surprise he knew the neighbors in the area and had known the parents of the family we were going to visit.  We invited him in to have some iced tea and food but he politely refused saying it was a pleasure to be able to help people.  As I shook his hand I asked him his name again thanking him for taking time to assist us. He just smiled and said, “I always like ladies with a pretty smile.” By the way, this Good Samaritan’s name is Wilson.

I share this experience with you because we were helped not just once but many times on this trip by kind, thoughtful, caring people. Whether it was in a restaurant, at the little liquor store, wherever, southern graciousness was part of the moment.  Too often we become so fearful when we are in a place we don’t know - we don’t ask for help when we need it.  Kind people like Wilson exist everywhere.  Haven’t you helped a stranger when they needed help?

I know that we won’t be able to repay Wilson for his help but we will pass it on.  Who knows when we’ll be able to help someone get through a challenge that they are facing?  We don’t but we believe what goes around comes around. So when you are helped just pass it on to the next person who crosses you path that may need it.

Enjoy your summer and have a wonderful and safe 4th of July.

The Recipe Box – Chicken Littles

            This week I interviewed Greta Podleski and her book ‘Eat, Shrink & Be Merry’.  This is one of her favorite recipes for parties and she recommends that you make up a number of batches as they’ll disappear as quickly as they come out of the oven.  With the 4th of July coming up you might enjoy this tasty recipe that’ll keep them coming back for more. Have a fabulous holiday!

Ingredients: 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 1 Tbsp grated gingerroot, 1 Tsp grated orange zest, 1/4 Tsp each ground coriander and curry powder, 1 Tsp minced garlic, 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 12 oz.), 12 whole water chestnuts (canned), 12 slices bacon, cut in half crosswise, 24 round wooden toothpicks.

Directions: To make marinade, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, gingerroot, orange zest, coriander, curry, and garlic in a small bowl. Set aside.

 Cut chicken breasts into 24 bite-sized pieces.  Cut water chestnuts in half. Combine chicken, water chestnuts, and marinade in a shallow glass baking dish (a pie plate would work) or in a large, heavy-duty, resealable plastic bag. Mix well to coat chicken and water chestnuts with marinade. Marinate in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. (You can marinate overnight for even better flavor.)

To make rumaki, lay one half-strip of bacon on work surface. Place chicken piece in center of bacon strip and top chicken with water chestnut. Fold over ends of bacon to cover chicken and water chestnut. Secure with toothpick. Make sure toothpick pierces water chestnut, or the water chestnut will fall out.

Place rumaki on a wire rack on a baking sheet. (Using a rack prevents the food from soaking in the bacon drippings.) Bake at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes, until chicken and bacon are cooked through.  Serve warm.

True Stories about Real People

 Challenges? We all face them. They come in different sizes, shapes and colors. If you are feeling discouraged because of difficult times then this story should lift your spirits.

            Expelled from college and a total disaster in every business he had tried, this individual felt there was nothing left for him to look forward to.  He was a total failure on all levels and finally he was going to end it all.  He decided that drowning in Lake Michigan on a cold winter night would be the right thing to do.  32 years old, he took a deep breath and decided to look one last time at the brilliant night sky above him.

            Then it happened, a moment that totally changed his life forever.  As he looked at the sky these thoughts came into his mind, “You have no right to eliminate yourself. You do not belong to you.”  He walked away from the freezing water of Lake Michigan to start over and do something with his life.

            He became an inventor, engineer, mathematician, architect, poet and cosmologist.  Dozens of honorary degrees were given to him as well as a Nobel Prize nomination.  He wrote two dozen books, circled the globe 57 times and talked with millions around the world.

            Who was he?  Buckminster Fuller.  We know him as the father of the geodesic dome.

Life’s Test

There’s only one method of meetin’ life’s test

Jes’ keep on a-strivin’ an’ hope for the best;

Don’t give up the ship an’ quit in dismay;

‘Cause hammers are thrown when you’d like a bouquet.

This world would be tiresome we’d all get the blues,

If all the folks in it jest held the same views;

So finish your work, show the best of your skill,

Some folds won’t like it, but other folks will.

July’s Chuckle

During a trip to the zoo we saw a sign posted next to the empty polar bear exhibit stating that the bear had died after eating a glove.

“The poor polar bear,” remarked the woman standing next to us.

Her husband’s slightly different reaction: “The poor guy wearing the glove!”
