Power Thought for March

"Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open".

~~Alexander Graham Bell

A Moment with Donna………Cups of Chocolate

A group of graduates successfully established in life and career were chatting at their annual class reunion.  At one point in their conversation the verbal trip down memory lane brought into mind a favorite professor. They found out that this professor was still alive, though now retired, and decided they would take a trip to visit once more this very special man who had for each of them, been an inspiration and example for their lives.

When the professor got their call he was so pleased that these former students would take time out of their busy lives to come and see him.  Upon their arrival he invited them into his cozy living room.  The walls bookcases were stuffed with papers, books and memorabilia of his years as a teacher.  Oversized chairs and a huge dark brown old leather sofa, whose cushions had long ago lost their firmness, surrounded a large square dark walnut coffee table.  This table had long ago lost its polished shine and now bore the scars of ink pens, watermarks and scuffs from heels that had often been propped on its surface for comfort as the professor and students had held animated discussions about the pros and cons of life and philosophy.

It didn’t take long for the conversation to become animated.  To the professors surprise and amusement each of the graduates started to complain about how stressful their lives were; how relationships just weren’t what they should be.  Their disappointment and feeling of helplessness kept expanding the more they talked.  The professor decided it was time for a break.  He interrupted them to say he was going to the kitchen to fix some hot chocolate and would bring it out in a few minutes.  He got up out of his chair and went into his kitchen.

The graduates continued the pattern of their conversation and while in the kitchen the professor listened to their words carefully.  A plan starting formulating in his mind as he put out a serving tray, cups and napkins to serve his guests.  By the time he had put the steaming hot chocolate into the chocolate pot and all of the items on the tray his strategy was well structured. As he came through the kitchen door the former students turned for the chocolaty fragrance had truly grabbed their attention and revitalized memories of previous visits years before.  He placed the serving tray down on the old walnut table and invited them to choose their cup of preference and for each to pour their own chocolate.  Soon everyone had their piping hot cup of chocolate. Quiet settled in as each was occupied with tiny sips of the steaming flavorful brew.

While they were occupied the professor took the opportunity to share his thoughts. “Have you noticed the cups you chose to drink from?”  You took those cups that you felt represented yourself.  I deliberately placed cups of fine porcelain, glass and plain pottery on the tray. Each of you made your choice leaving behind the plain pottery.  I have been listening to your complaints while I was in the kitchen and wanted to share some thoughts with you.  It is quite normal for you to want the finest and best for yourselves but in some respects that is the source of your discomfort and stress.  The chocolate you are enjoying doesn’t care what it is served in.  The container doesn’t add the richness of flavor to the chocolate itself.  It is the quality of the combined ingredients that make the chocolate delicious.

You’ve become too concerned with appearances not substance, nor do you have appreciation for quality of purpose and action.  You think that you lack what you perceive you need.”

“I would like for you to consider something…..Life is the hot chocolate!  Your job, money and position are just tools to hold and express your experiences of life.  You are far more than that.  Sometimes by concentrating only on the external we fail to savor the essence of life we have been given.  It is the internal substance of faith, integrity, curiosity, joy, purpose and action that bring quality to life.   The happiest of people may not have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have”.

“Your cup of life, like the cup of hot chocolate, is full.  Enjoy its richness, texture and flavor.  Inhale its fragrance, sip thoughtfully, realizing that sometimes you may burn yourself if you aren’t patient enough to let it come to drinking temperature, and let its warmth comfort and soothe your fears.”

“My suggestions to you are: Live Simply; Love Generously; Care Deeply and Speak Kindly…the rest will take care of itself.”

***Life is in the dreaming, working with purpose and enjoying the journey for all of the potholes we may encounter.  Have a fabulous month and a Happy St. Patrick’s to you all!

True Stories about Real People

What are we missing?

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, tickets for Joshua Bell's performance at a theater in Boston were sold out and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste, and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing? ~~ submitted by Gayle P.
