Power Thought for September
"There are many fine things you mean to do some day, under what you think will be more favorable circumstances. But the only time that is yours is the present. Each day comes bringing gifts. Untie the knots. ~ Greenville Kleisher

A Moment with Donna
…………Breakthrough
Wispy, creamy white curtains of gauze-like fog wrap and caress the tall evergreens around our neighborhood, creating a gentle coolness in the morning air. The ground is covered with light dew and you know that fall is quietly announcing its arrival here in the Pacific Northwest. The darker mornings that evolve into grey skies are typical here and one begins to yearn for the bright beams of sunshine that we have enjoyed so abundantly this past summer, however, Mother Nature is not to be deterred. The seasons change without our permission but if you wait long enough sunshine breaks through the foggy haze and blues skies do show up forcing chilly temperatures to disappear and a new day shines brightly with its sunny warmth.
So much is going on in our world today that can make one feel depressed, it can feel like there are no options to work with. In our neighborhood -- like so many throughout the country -- homes have had 'For Sale' signs that have been up for months. No buyers. People are finding their jobs phased out due to economic pressures that businesses are going through. These are challenging times it's true yet we can breakthrough what seems to be impassable and create new opportunities.
I feel so fortunate to be able to do my daily radio program as I am able to interact with so many movers and shakers from all walks of life. They, each and every one of them, emphasize that we are the creators of choice. We can shift our actions, thinking and planning to develop new directions for ourselves. It takes time to evaluate what we really want to change in our lives and what we plan on doing to achieve what we desire. There are no shortcuts, no magic wands to wave and no magic formula's to add to water, mix and drink.
"Everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was." This is a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson and I felt it fit the topic. We all have to start right where we are now, to explore, question, and examine our ceilings of attitudes. If we find that we are saying, 'Boy, times are really bad .. there just isn't much I can do to make a difference. I'm stuck where I am. Can't take chances.' then that will be your reality. To breakthrough our self-imposed limiting attitudes takes first a conscious awareness of them. It is all too easy to adopt paradigms of mass victimization that is promoted within so many levels of media. Life can be a tough proposition, that's true. However, that doesn't mean you sit back in your mental rocking chair and adopt a helpless attitude.
There have been many times I have had the experience of feeling suffocated by circumstances that I didn't ask for yet, when I have been really honest with myself, somehow I had managed to get myself into situations that forced me to recognize it was time for change. Time stands still for no one and today it seems as if time has been speeding up its process and then some.
Take responsibility for your thinking, your actions, and your life. Don't be concerned about the mistakes. Learn from them and take what is useful and dump the trash left over. Challenges are here to stay and one of the best things I feel that anyone can do is look for mentors that you respect and appreciate. Ask them for suggestions. Reach out for new opportunities and breakthrough that glass ceiling of self-imposed limitations. Go to bookstores and libraries. Reach for those books, audio or printed, that will inspire you to reach for dreams that perhaps you have shelved because they weren't practical.
Robert Schuller once said, "Tough times don't last but tough people do." He's right. Focus on your strengths and recognize that you are unique in your own special way. Opportunity is truly knocking at your door but you are the one that will choose to open that door. This is your life. How do you want your story to be told about how you dealt with tough times? What will your breakthrough be?
By the way, should you eventually write a book about your breakthrough be sure to send me a copy and I'll have you as a guest on my show.
Have a wonderful life and may you be blessed beyond your imaginings

The Recipe Box Taco Beer Can Chicken
Just when you think you have cooked chicken every way possible something new 'pops' up. Here is a simple yet fun recipe for one of my favorite meats using a technique I never would have thought of! Enjoy!
Ingredients: Your favorite pkt. (1oz) of taco seasoning, 1Tbls. chopped fresh cilantro, 2 Tbls. olive oil, 1 roasting chicken, 6-7 lbs., 1 onion, cut into 8 wedges, 1 can (12 oz) cheap beer, cherry and grape tomatoes, chile peppers and parsley leaves for garnish if you like.
Directions: Place rack in lowest position of oven; remove all remaining racks. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine seasoning packet, cilantro and oil in small bowl; set aside. With fingers, carefully separate skin from chicken breast starting at neck. Spread half of reserved seasoning mixture over breast meat under skin. Tuck half of onion wedges under skin in areas near thighs and wings. Rub remaining seasoning mixture over chicken skin. Place remaining onion wedges in chicken cavity.
>Discard 1/4 cup beer from can; place can in center of roasting pan. Holding chicken by neck cavity, place over beer can until can is inside cavity and chicken is standing upright, making sure not to spill beer. >
Roast until meat thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh away from bone register 180 degrees, about 1 hour, 25 minutes; tent with foil if browning too quickly. Let stand 10 minutes. > Using tongs, remove can from chicken. Skim fat from pan juices. Serve juices with chicken. Garnish with fresh tomatoes, etc if desired.

True Stories about Real People
Darrell 'Shifty' Powers
Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.
I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat. Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.
Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . " at which point my heart skipped. At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.
I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.
I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say.
I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in coach. He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.
Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer. There was no parade. No big event in Staples Center. No wall to wall back to back 24x7 news coverage. No weeping fans on television.
Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way. Please forward this email to everyone you know, especially to the veterans. Rest in peace, Shifty.
"A nation without heroes is nothing."
