Power Thought for April

"Your assumptions are your windows on the world -- scrub them off every once in a while or the light won't come in."-- Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce, M*A*S*H

A Moment with Donna...

Elsa

I’m in a local chain store looking through some items trying to figure out if I should replace my DVD player and to find out about some of the newer technology that has come out. I had been busy with errands and decided on impulse to stop in and ask some questions. As I am standing in the front section of the store trying to determine which direction I should go, I hear a young woman’s voice asking, “Can I assist you in finding what you are looking for?”  My immediate response was “Yes, please!”

An attractive dark-haired young woman in her twenties starts walking towards me smiling.  I was glancing about at the thousands of items around me and wanting to save time and frustration said to her, after she introduced herself as ‘Elsa’, “I am interested in DVD’s and would like to know your selection and cost.”  Her response, “I’ll be happy to help.”  She then directed me towards a section of electronics in the store showing me the various models, telling me about the advantages and disadvantages with each one.  The technology was amazing as were the prices.  I told Elsa that my old DVD player had been acting strangely and it was then that a very interesting conversation developed.

Elsa is retired military.  She served in Iraq and told me, “What might have happened to your DVD player, if you use it a lot, is that it got too hot and it burned out.”  My DVD got too hot?  That was something I had never considered.  She proceeded to tell me more. “When I was in Iraq both my DVD player and laptop got fried and I had to replace them both.  When I got off duty I would play movies on my DVD player.  My fellow soldiers would join me as I had the best location in our quarters for watching movies.  We spent lots of hours watching films just to pass time.  We put the player on a blanket not realizing that the unit would over heat.  I did the same thing with the laptop.  Eventually they both burned out because the small air vents were blocked by sitting on the blanket.  A computer tech told me why they burned out and that I should always have a cooling platform under the electronic items-the platform has fans to keep air circulating – thus I would avoid the expense of replacing these items again in the near future.”

I was amazed at this information.  I guess if you think about it logically it makes sense but I had never considered that the DVD or laptop would have that kind of a problem.  However, after she told me this I remembered how warm my new netbook had felt to the touch after working with it for a few hours in the study room at the local library.  As for my DVD I played it daily for 4-5 hours listening to CD’s and reviewing videos for my radio show.  Elsa was proving to be an ‘angel in black’  (her store uniform was all black with her name in red above her left chest pocket). Elsa had saved me a potential loss of hundreds of dollars just by sharing her experiences.  She also warned me about getting a small cooling pad to go under the DVD player. “If you have animals like I do,” she said, “I have two long haired cats and after buying the small fan it sucked up the cat hairs, becoming clogged and jammed.  It will die on you and you’ll just have to get another one.”  This was another valuable insight.

This young woman went out of her way to show me other options to consider.  She never pressured me and was totally honest.  Within 25 minutes I had gotten an education on technology that was invaluable and I thanked her heartily.   She said she was happy to help and the next time I come into the store to be sure and ask for her.   What an employee and what great service!  I definitely will be going back to pick up a cooling platform shortly and will be sure to ask for her.

Many forms of electronics don’t have cooling systems and will breakdown if you use them for long periods of time without cooling pads circulating air around them.  Who knew?  I didn’t but now I do and I am happy to share this information with you.  By the way, I talked with another technician and he confirmed what Elsa said.  He also added that if you work with a computer on your lap you need a cooling pad as the material in your slacks or dress will cut off air flow, so you should always carry one with you when traveling.  The cooling pads are very compact, light, should have two fans and the average cost is about $30.00.  That is an inexpensive investment to protect a tool that can cost hundreds maybe thousand plus dollars.

My grateful thanks to Elsa and those like her who enjoy providing good service to their customers and answering questions openly and honestly.  Elsa’s military experiences made this civilian a much wiser consumer.

Have a fabulous Easter and a heart enriching spring!

The Recipe Box – Four-Star Salmon Wellington

Easter is just around the corner and if you have been wondering about what to fix – would like to try something different – how about this delicious and elegant dish? It’ll ‘wow’ your guests!

Ingredients: 2 lb. whole salmon fillet, skin remover, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/8 tsp. pepper, 1 pkg. (8 oz.) spinach-and-artichoke-flavored cream cheese, 2 Tbs. chopped fresh dill, 2 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley, 2 Tbs. capers, drained, chopped, 1 tsp. grated lemon zest, 1 Tbs. lemon juice, 1 sheet (half of 17.3-oz pkg.) frozen puff pastry dough, thawed, 1 egg, lightly beaten, and  lemon, parsley and dill, optional.

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat jellyroll pan with cooking spray; top with salmon. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Combine cream cheese, dill, parsley, capers, lemon zest and juice; spread over salmon.  On lightly floured surface, roll pastry into 16”X12” rectangle. Cut 2 1⁄2”-wode strip from long side of pastry. Cover salmon with remaining pastry, tucking edges under fillet. From reserved strip cut 4 (3/8”-wide) strips with fluted pastry wheel and 6-8 leaves using 2”X1” leaf-shaped cutter. Lightly score ‘veins” into each leaf. Brush pastry with egg. Arrange leaves, pastry strips, dill and parsley sprigs on top of pastry; brush with egg. Cut several slits in pastry. Bake until pastry is golden and fish is cooked through, 20 minutes.  Garnish with additional lemon, parsley and dill if desired.

True Stories about Real People

Sometimes the best teachers are strangers with strong opinions.  This story is an illustration that I think you’ll enjoy.

There was a business executive, Mr. Metcalf, who decided he wanted to do community service by working at a hospice facility for the terminally ill.  His first assignment was an elderly man named Roy who was dealing with colon cancer.  One day he was assisting Roy and he said, “Maybe you want me to help you out of those Mickey Mouse pajamas and into something more respectable.”  Roy was in a great deal of pain but he responded with a weak but firm voice, “I like these pj’s. Mickey reminds me that I can still laugh a little, which is more than the doctor has ever done.  Maybe you should get some pj’s with Goofy on them.” Roy laughed out loud after he made this statement but Mr. Metcalf didn’t.  “Young man,” Roy said, “you’re one of the most depressing people I’ve ever met. I’m sure you’re a nice person, but if you’re here to help, it ain’t working!” Mr. Metcalf was not happy after hearing these remarks.

On the last day of his training, Mr. Metcalf was told that Roy had died.  The instructor who was training Mr. Metcalf handed him a paper bag that Roy had requested he give to Mr. Metcalf.  Upon opening the bag he found a T-shirt with the happy face of Goofy on its front.  A note was attached, it read: “Put on this shirt at the first sign you’re taking yourself too seriously. In other words, wear it all the time!” Metcalf laughed heartily and wore his ‘Goofy’ shirt frequently.

Authors-Special Mention

Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place.  You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.

Here are my three picks for interesting reading for April.

1.      Aqua Shock by Susan Marks. This interview will be about water and how it is becoming more valuable than gold or oil.

2.      The Rise & Fall of the American Medical Empire by Dr. Robert A. Linden.  This family practitioner has some eye opening information about our medical system and what we can do as consumers.

3.       The Phoenix Lights by Dr. Lynne Kitai.  This is a woman who has dared to go public about the UFO’s she has seen and documented on film.

April’s Chuckle

A cowboy from Sweetwater, Texas walked into a bank in New York City and asked for the loan officer.   He told the loan officer that he was going to Paris for an international cowboy festival for two weeks and needed to borrow $5,000 and that he was not a depositor of the bank.   The bank officer told him that the bank would need some form of security for the loan, so the cowboy handed over the keys to a new Ferrari parked in front of the bank.

The cowboy produced the title and everything checked out. The loan officer agreed to hold the car as collateral for the loan and apologized for having to charge 12% interest.  Later, the bank's president and its officers all enjoyed a good laugh at the cowboy from the south for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral for a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drove the Ferrari into the bank's private underground garage and parked it.

Two weeks later, the cowboy returned repaid the $5,000 and the interest of $23.07. The loan officer said, 'Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out on Dunn & Bradstreet and found that you are a Distinguished Alumni from the University of  Texas , a highly sophisticated investor and  Multi-Millionaire with real estate and financial interests all over the world.  Your investments include a large number of wind turbines around Sweetwater , Texas . What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?'

The good 'ole Texas cowboy replied, 'Whereelse in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $23.07 and expect it to be there when I return?'

 Nice day ya'll.....
