Power Thought for August

"The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire."
~~Ferdinand Foch

A Moment with Donna...

Now is the Time

A guest I had on my show recently reminded me of an old story I heard years ago.  Its’ message is a significant one so I thought I would start this month’s editorial with it.

There was an old man, a young boy and a donkey.  They were on a trip to a village many miles from home.  The old man concerned about the young boys stamina told him to ride the donkey and he would walk.  As they were moving along on their journey they passed some people who stopped them.  The young boy was soundly criticized for riding and letting the old man walk.  One so young has much more stamina and strength than the elder man.  So it was the young boy got off of the donkey and the old man got on the animal they continued their journey.  Another group of people meet the trio on the road. This time criticism was leveled at the old man. How dare he ride when the boy was so young and he being the older man should have the strength and wisdom of years to know better.  The old man got down from the donkey and proceeded to promptly lift the young boy back into the rider’s seat.  As they were getting closer to the village they were going to have to cross a bridge.  Just before getting to the bridge the traveling trio encountered yet another group of people who immediately berated them for riding the donkey.  The poor animal was abused and they should be ashamed of themselves.  They should carry the donkey as the animal had to be exhausted from such a long journey.  The young boy and old man looked at each other wondering what to do.  They decided to tie up the donkey and suspend him from a pole that they would carry as they crossed the bridge.  With much difficulty the donkey was secured to the carrying pole by his hooves but as they were halfway across the bridge the frightened animal struggled against his ties and fell into the raging waters below.

There is an obvious moral to the story. I feel that too many unsubstantiated opinions created death for common sense.  Each of the characters presented, as well as the opinionated critics, didn’t represent clear thinking by any stretch of the imagination. How many times have we made choices based on assumptions instead of taking the time to check things out, question and investigate?  I plead guilty. I daresay that if my mistakes in life were lined up and counted … whew… do I really want to go there? Okay, maybe the number would circle the globe a few times…might as well be honest as I am human just like you.  It took a lot of years for me to learn lessons that today serve me well but the pain of experience created some serious bruises that took time to heal.  That’s life.  There are no straight lines in living, just lots of bumps, curves, surprising turns and lots of stop signs at four-way intersections that bring confusion many times. However, often when you hit that four-way intersection you are forced to stop, think and evaluate options.  The result of that can cause innovation, changes in action, direction and thinking.

I found this quote from ‘The Philosophy of Physics’, “An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents; what does happen is that its opponents gradually die out and that the growing generation is familiarized with the idea from the beginning.”  That was stated in 1936.  Some things just don’t seem to change much.  Today we are encountering strong resistance to the fast moving pace of technology, holding people accountable for their actions and dumping thinking patterns that perpetuate fear, hate and destruction on multiple levels.  However, I am a strong believer in the power of the individual and that when we hold ourselves accountable, give our best and strive to continue to learn, expand and grow our talents, anything is possible.

Now is the time to become assertive for right action and accountability.  Now is the time for innovation, growth and development in all areas of life.  Innovation is nothing more that introducing new things and methods that are unique and different but effective to meet the needs of the current marketplace and environment.  This is on all levels; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. These times can be looked at as scary or opportunistic.  We can empower ourselves or become slaves to other peoples thinking.  Challenge and change are a constant in the experience of living so why not employ some questions that may enable you to find options to consider as you are going through the process.

Here are a few thoughts that have helped me through the years….1) What are the possibilities available? 2) What is the worst case scenario and what could be the best? 3) What do you have to work with, such as mentors, books, software or other tools? 4) What action or actions can be taken? And last but not least…after thinking through the options and possibilities, following through with action.  Someone once said, “Progress, technologically and otherwise, comes from doing things in an unpredictable way.”

Now is the time, not tomorrow, to start focusing on what is most important to you. Your life, your journey, is unique and special and I look forward to the day when you may share it with me and many others.  Have a fabulous summer.

The Recipe Box – Frosty Watermelon Soup

The temperatures are hot, hot, hot and you want to cool down.  The last thing you want to do is cook, heating up the kitchen and just not enjoying the thought of preparing food at all.  Well, why not try something different that is refreshing, tasty, healthy and cooling?  Sound like a good idea?  I think you’ll enjoy this summer soup and it is inexpensive and time-saving too.

Ingredients: 1 envelope of unflavored gelatin, 1/4 cup cold water, 6 cups diced fresh watermelon, 1/4 cup sugar (or sugar substitute or stevia), 1/3 cup fresh lime juice, 1/4 teaspoon salt. Fresh mint sprigs for garnish.

Directions: Soften gelatin in cold water. Place over hot water to melt until ready to use. Press watermelon through a sieve. Add sugar, lime juice and salt. Stir in melted gelatin. Chill until mixture has thickened slightly, 3-4 hours. Serve in chilled cups or bowls. Use mint sprigs for garnish.

True Stories about Real People

What would you do if you had been laid off of work, no job prospects and felt completely lost?  This is one man’s story that I feel is truly inspiring and I hope you’ll feel the same way.  I read it in a recent magazine publication and have abbreviated the contents a little but you’ll still get the complete picture.

Reed Sandridge was sitting alone at a fountain in Washington D.C.  He was reflecting on his current conditions, laid off from a job due to the downturn in the economy, wondering what to do.  He notices a woman poorly dressed not too far away from where he was sitting. He gets up and goes to sit by her and blurts out, “Hello, I’d like to give you $10.”

As you can imagine the women responded, “Why?” Then she smiled and took the money from his hand saying, “Thank you. This made my day.”

This is a process of giving that Reed decided to do for a solid year.  He remembered when he was growing up his mother used to tell him, “When times are tough it’s then that we must give back.” So Reed determined that he would take $3,600 out of his savings and give away $10 a day for 365 day.  He felt that this was his way of celebrating his mother’s faith and legacy. So on December 15th he started the process.

The response has been amazing and heartwarming.  Sometimes people say no to his money gift, others say they’ll buy food for those that need it. One young man took the $10 and bought baking supplies and Reed found him a couple of days later passing out his freshly baked cookies, telling people to take two – one for themselves and one for someone else.  He would tell them to pass it on. Reed started a blog and shared that young man’s story; it created a ripple effect that goes on today.  Reed even started a ‘Worldwide Day of Giving’. Daily people are inspired to help others via his project.

You can find out more details by going to his blog ..YearofGiving.org. One person can make a difference and all it takes is deciding what you want to do.  Tough times happen to all of us but it is what we do with them that makes the difference not just in your life but in the life of others.

Authors Special Mention for August

Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place.  You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.

Here are my three picks for interesting reading for June.

1.The 30 Day Diabetes Cure, Dr. Ripich.  If you know of anyone who is battling diabetes this book is a must read.  This is one of many doctors who desire to see their patients happy and healthy.  This doctor decided to publish his professional findings and they are well worth knowing about.  Check out the interview time and the book as well, it could make a difference in a loved one’s life.

2. Who Do You See in the Mirror? Joseph A. Williams. During these days of disappointing and corrupt politicians, business people and other individuals that are gaining so much presence in the news on a daily basis it is refreshing to know about a man who chose to leave the corporate position he had to become an employee because he wanted to know what had gone wrong.

3. Finding Center, Strategies to Build Strong Girls & Women, Dr. Maureen Mack. In today’s world many woman have strived to find their place in the working world and sometimes have made it. However, Dr. Mack has found many things sadly lacking and her publication gives down to earth perspectives that empower women, young and old, to take their rightful place in life feeling empowered in the process.

What’s Your Story?

I am putting together a book of paranormal stories and if you have a personal one to share I would love to hear from you.  The goal is to collect 100 stories from people dealing with clairvoyant happenings, dreams, out of body experiences and much more.  So far, I have received about 25 stories and I would love to hear yours. August’s Chuckle

A born-and-bred city slicker is in the country when he sees a field of animals and says to the farmer, “What a strange-looking cow. Why doesn’t it have horns?”

“Well, there are several reasons.” The farmer replies. “Some cows get their horns late, while others have their horns cut off, and still others never even grow horns.”

“And this cow?” the city slicker asks.

“Well, the reason this cow doesn’t have any horns is that it’s a horse!”

A Summer’s Day

By Emily Dickinson

A something in a summer’s day

As slow her flambeaux burn away

Which solemnizes me.

A something in a summer’s noon –

A depth – an azure – a perfume –

Transcending ecstasy.

And still within a summer’s night

A something so transporting bright

I clap my hands to see –

Then veil my too inspecting face

Lets such a subtle – shimmering grace

Flutter too far for me –

The wizard fingers never rest –

The purple brook within the breast

Still chafes its narrow bed –

Still rears the East her amber flag –

Guides still the sun along the crag –

His caravan of Red –

So looking on – the night – the morn

Conclude the wonder gay –

And I meet, coming thro’ the dews

Another summer’s day.
