A Moment with Donna...

Chocolate Martini's

This past Saturday my friend Marcia and I were cruising through a local craft store preparing for some upcoming events that needed a creative touch.  Once we decided we had everything we needed we headed to a cashier to pay for our purchases.  Little did we know that we were soon to witness an exhibition of temper tantrum unparalleled in our shopping experiences.

At an adjacent cashier position we could hear a conversation happening and within a couple of minutes a female customer, in her forties I would estimate, started raising her voice in anger with the cashier.  Her voice got louder and louder until she was yelling at the top of her lungs, “Get the manager!  You are so stupid!  I want the manager right now!”

I looked at my friend and jokingly said, “PMS.  Definitely needs some chocolate.”  Marcia said – as we continued to hear the woman yelling at the top of her lungs – “ I think she needs a box of chocolates!”  Then she said, “No…what she needs is a double chocolate martini!”

We were joking with our cashier and she was laughing at our remarks.  However, the manager and the cashier, who were contending with this irate woman, weren’t smiling.  The stress on their faces just to keep from exploding at the attitude and verbal assault of this customer was obvious. While we were observing this temper tantrum we of course could hear every word said by this childish individual.  She had brought back an item, like a doll’s dress that didn’t have a veil attached as others of the same type had.  The outfit was soiled when she purchased it (so she said) and now she wanted a replacement. It was obvious that this woman was using intimidation to get what she wanted.  The manager patiently listened to the tirade that went on for at least 5 minutes and said quietly, “No problem, just exchange the outfit.”  The woman finally shut up, for a moment, - grabbed the replacement outfit and then continued her tirade.  “You should fire this employee, she is stupid!  I am also going to report you both!” She then walked very rapidly out of the store.

As this woman was walking out I turned to Marcia and said, “She doesn’t need a double chocolate martini…she needs a barrel of chocolate martini’s!” We all had a good laugh, then Marcia and I walked towards the cashier and manager who had endured most graciously the obnoxious verbiage of this very rude customer.  We told them both how we had watched the whole scenario and really respected, appreciated their patient response and actions.  We also jokingly mentioned how chocolate could have solved the woman’s attitude and that chocolate martini’s would have been even better.  The manager looked at us smiling and asked, “Do you happen to have a few of those chocolate martinis handy?  I could use a double right now!” By the time we left both the cashier and manager had smiles on their faces and that was good.

The reason I am sharing this recent experience with you is that it seems that courtesy, good manners and pleasant tone in dealing with critical situations like this one can make a big difference.  The woman who created such a ruckus was doing it deliberately.  For whatever reason she was filled with fear and that is what created within her the need to scream, be obnoxious and totally rude.  I wonder how many times she’s used this form of intimidation to get what she wants.  She is a perfect demonstration of the terrible two’s that we associate with children but she has never grown out of the childish pattern. She didn’t seem to realize that the staffs at this store have a wonderful attitude and would have been happy to exchange the item as she requested.  I noticed the woman’s manner as she left the store and knew she could feel the attitudes of the other customers and employees who were watching her intensely – she knew that she had overstepped her bounds and was going to move out quickly so no one would pass judgment on her as she had on others.

Anyone can have a bad day.  People can make mistakes and cause us frustration and anxiety if we let them.  I have encountered immature people, such as this woman, during my life and they remind me of bullies who love to dominate, terrorize and create fear so they can manipulate getting what they want. Usually the best way to deal with them is to face them down with clarity, fearless intention and hold them accountable for their demeanor and actions. They don’t like this and then will avoid those environments, people and situations that won’t let them get away with this inappropriate behavior.

Civility is never out of style, contrary to some persons demonstrations, and the more we can support it by example then obnoxious individuals will have to go somewhere else to get satisfaction. . My hat is off to the cashier and manager who kept their cool, resolving a most unpleasant situation in a courteous, upstanding manner.

Have a fabulous day and should you have a rough moment always remember, chocolate is your friend and better yet, don’t forget the chocolate martini’s!

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
**
1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads:

"Bubba….., Bertha, Duke, Slim, & I went for more ammo and beer.  Be back in an hour. Don't mess with the pit  bulls; they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up bad.  I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood.  Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside.  Be right back.

True Stories about Real People

Helen Keller is a woman we are all familiar with.  Deaf and blind due to a disease she experienced tremendous anger and frustration because she couldn’t communicate.  It was her teacher Anne Sullivan that she learned how to use her other senses and became an active participant in life on all levels.  These are words from her autobiography that express well the greatness of the human spirit when it conquers what seems to be the impossible.

“Fate – silent, pitiless – bars the way. Fain would I question his imperious decree; for my heart is undisciplined and passionate, but my tongue will not utter the bitter, futile words that rise to my lips, and they fall back into my heart like unshed tears.  Silence sits immense upon my soul. Then comes hope with a smile and whispers, ‘There is joy in self-forgetfulness.’ So I try to make the light in other people’s eyes my sun, the music in others’ ears my symphony, the smile on others’ lips my happiness.”

Authors-Special Mention

Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place.  You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.  Here are my three picks for interesting reading for this month.

1. The Road Out of Hell, Anthony Flacco.  This is a true story about a family, their secrets and a little boy whose life takes a course no one could ever imagine.  Murder, deception and an unexpected outcome makes this story stand out and Anthony does an outstanding job with his investigative journalism.

2.  The Wisdom Man, Camilla Chance.  This is a true story about an Australian Aboriginal named Banjo.  Camilla knew him personally and recorded his stories for the world to read.

 3. The Healing Power of Chocolate, Cal Orey.  Anything and everything you have ever wanted to know about chocolate is in this book. Fun, fascinating and interesting

February’s Chuckle

Marines are known for storming the beaches, not for romance. I witnessed this firsthand at the base in Twenty Nine Palms, California. One of the enlisted men complimented the receptionist’s flowered jacket.

“It’s very pretty,” he said shyly.

“Thank you,” she replied coyly.

“Yeah,” he went on. “It looks just like my mother’s sofa.”
