Let Freedom Reign

It is early am, the alarm has gone off and my body wonders why it can’t stay in bed. Muscles are screaming demanding rest after my exercise session of painting about 1000 square feet of deck and railings over the weekend. As I gingerly move to get the activities of the day started I survey the job done and feel pleased with the result of the labor intensive work. It had to be done and the weather was perfect so I took on the project. It was my choice.

                    Painting a deck may sound rather trite for a newsletter editorial but it isn’t.  It presents lessons of its own. Whenever you choose a challenge or take on a project you need to think it through, clear the space of debris and focus on what has to be completed.  You then need to be sure you choose your tools and products needed. Only when you have done the initial planning can you start preparing, taking care to protect the areas that don’t need to be touched.

                    It is then you start the job doing the most difficult sections first, for they are going to take the greatest amount of time. Once those details are attended to then you work on the base taking care to determine how you are going to proceed as you don’t want to paint yourself into a corner. Periodically you step back to be sure you haven’t missed anything. If you do, you touch it up, smoothing out the corrections needed; then you have to step away allowing the paint or circumstances to cure and adhere to the surface. That means that you have to let go and let the conditions cure in their own way. After a bit of time you go back and survey the job deciding if a second coat of attention is needed, if so, you do what is necessary. Once the job is done you can move on to the next project. Planning, patience, perseverance, action and follow through are disciplines that serve us well whether painting a deck, playing tennis, going to school, running a business or giving a speech.  There are no shortcuts. Practice, practice, practice is what it takes to become proficient at anything.

                    This month we celebrate the ‘4th of July”. Parties, BBQ’s, entertainment and fireworks are on the agenda. Yet too few truly honor the men and women who believed so fervently in the dream of the ‘Right of Choice’. Many individuals sacrificed everything for future generations to know what they believed was a right – the precious gift of freedom and the pursuit of happiness in one’s own measure. Yet, if we are not careful, that which we take for granted today can be taken away. Millions around the world dream of coming to America.  They yearn to be free – free to choose what they desire, aspire for – yet freedom comes with a price. Diligence, attention and never assuming someone else will care for you are primary. There are no free lunches. Hard work, willingness to grow, change and expansion of our skills, talents and vision are consistently required.  For ‘Freedom to Reign’ she is to be nurtured, respected and guarded against those who would strike her down and wipe her out.

                    Let’s not forget that it has taken people with vision, an inner passion to be free and a fire within their spirits that said, “Let’s take on the impossible and make it happen!” and they did. It took a long time and now it is our turn to take on the challenges of change. ‘Let Freedom Reign’ and take charge of your choices so that our children, their children and other future generations will continue to enjoy the liberties of our great heritage.

The Recipe Box – A Gift of Salts

Recently I was given a gift of some flavored salts.  They were absolutely wonderful and when I came across some simple recipes I felt I should share them with you as they make wonderful, inexpensive gourmet gifts for those you know who love to cook. Here are 5 varieties to enjoy. Try them…I think you’ll like them and it costs just pennies to make.

1.      Citrus Salt: Mix 1 tsp. grated lemon zest, 1 tsp. grated lime zest and 1/2 tsp. grated orange zest; let dry completely on paper towel. Stir into 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use on chicken, fish or vegetables.

2.      Italian Salt: Combine 1 Tbs. finely chopped sun-dried tomato (not in oil), 1 tsp onion powder and 1 tsp. garlic powder with 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use on pasta, roasted vegetables, lamb or fish.

3.      Asian Salt: Grind 1/2 tsp. coriander seeds in a spice grinder. Then mix with 1 tsp. toasted sesame seeds, 1/8 tsp. ginger and 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use on pork, soups, roasted chicken or vegetables.

4.      Spicy Salt: Mix 1 tsp. chipotle chili powder and 1/8 tsp. cayenne powder with 1/2 cup kosher salt. For more heat add more cayenne. Use on eggs, meats, potatoes or corn on the cob.

5.      French Provencal Salt: Coarsely crush 2 tsp. dried rosemary and 1 tsp. dried lavender in a spice grinder; mix with 1/2 cup kosher salt. Use on Tomatoes, avocado, cheese or salads.

What happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Here are my three picks for interesting reading for July.

1.       Safe Hormones-Smart Women by Lindsey Berkson.  This is the first book I have come across that really addresses in a most informative way what women can do regarding hormonal changes. You don’t have to suffer unnecessarily and can use natural products (I am not talking about wild yam either).  This is a must read for women of all ages.  Why suffer when you don’t have too?

2.       Zen Women by Grace Jill Schireson.  This is a fascinating historical read about women in history in different cultures and what they have had to overcome.  This book took 10 years of research and truly is insightful with its details and how women survived through difficult times that historically were considered unimportant.

3.       Betrayal, Murder & Greed by Pam Puree & Mike ‘Darkside’ Beakle.  This is one of the most imformative publications about the inner workings of bail bonds, bounty hunters and the judicial system I have ever read. This is all about a world of individuals that play a big part in keeping criminals off of the streets. Amazing read.

An 1825 invitation to an Independence Day celebration

  • In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.[12]
  • In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.[13]
  • In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.[13]
  • In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.[13]
  • In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy".
  • In 1791 the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day" occurred.
  • In 1820 the first Fourth of July celebration was held in Eastport, Maine which remains the largest in the state.[14]
  • In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[15]
  • In 1938, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.[16]  ~~ Source: Wikipedia
