Power Thought for March

"Man can harness the winds, the waves and the tides, but when he can harness the power of love,
then for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire." ~Teihard de Chardin

A Moment with Donna...

Frustration

"You teach best what you most need to learn."
~Richard Bach, Illusions

This quote rang in my mental ears as I went through a week of frustration. It seemed that everything that could go wrong did. One frustrating situation after another; a mix-up with scheduling, electronic banking problems, the list went on and on. Have you ever experienced times like that? I have to be honest that I have had extended moments like these more than once in my life and I will probably have more because that just is the way it goes sometimes. You'll have sleepless nights as your mind runs through all kinds of scenarios over and over again. The mind recorder just doesn't seem to turn off on its own. Those tapes of mental frustration play again and again causing irritation on all levels. One becomes rather grumpy with it all. I know better than to let my mind take a journey of unnecessary ramblings yet there it was creating hours of no sleep with the mind energetically going in circles and nothing being resolved.

This had to stop. Life happens, so you have to take charge of the moment and determine to deal with whatever happens and move on. We all make mistakes or others can make mistakes that have an unexpected effect on us. So what can one do so you don't create a mental, emotional monster that takes over your space causing feelings of panic, anxiety and paralysis, even that feeling of powerlessness that can evolve more problems than you desire. Here are some suggestions that helped me to work out my agitating circumstances, perhaps you might find them handy for yourself sometime.

1. Face the facts. I found that by writing out what I was going through enabled me at 1:00 am to get a grip on my anxieties and see them clearly instead of following mental tangents that went nowhere. There is a magic when pen is put to paper. Fears are faced and honesty becomes the best policy.

2. What action is necessary? What steps can be taken to clear up the messy concerns? Maybe you don't have the exact answer but when you focus on the question a lot of confusion seems to disappear. Perhaps you can make a phone call to a friend asking what suggestions they might have or maybe you contact someone you trust as a counselor. Whatever you decide remember you don't have to be alone in resolving the dilemma. Write down whatever options, no matter how fanciful, on that paper. You never know what your intuitive self might bring to the surface of your mind.

3.Follow through with action as soon as possible.

4.Do everything you can and then release what you can't control. Let go and know that there will resolution to the situation. This too shall pass. In a hundred years no one will even care, including you.

5.Learn from the experience. You may be surprised to find that there are unexpected blessings, golden nuggets if you will, that lie within the unsettling experience that in the moment you cannot see. Count your blessings and move on. Life doesn't stand still. Like the mighty Colorado River it has its white water moments, quiet smooth sections to easily float through and some areas that are just muddy muck. If you get stuck in the muck you'll go no further and will watch the mighty river pass you by until you work your way out of it and get back into the flow.

Life throws us curves to see if we can dance to the music of various challenges. Don't worry if you feel like you have two left feet, with practice you'll learn how to waltz like a pro and weave your way in, through and about those challenges -- even helping people along the way. Determination, persistence and follow through are good habits to cultivate. They'll keep you focused so you'll be the person in charge of your own thinking and actions, enabling you to be the leader in your space, creating calm and resolution where discord might otherwise prevail.

Did I survive the week's upheavals? Yes. By using the steps I've noted within one week all was in balance again and I was grateful. These are tough times for a lot of people and there will always be challenges and aggravations to be faced. However, they can be worked through, one step at a time. Our future is created by how we handle our present circumstances and what a great one it will be when we take charge of where we are and what we do.

Have a terrific month, a wonderful St. Patrick's Day and don't forget that Daylight Savings Time begins on March 14th.

The Recipe Box – Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp with Creole Mustard

This is such a delicious recipe and so easy to make. I think that this is perfect for 4 people or just 2 if you are really hungry! Ingredient: 1/2 cup whole-grain Dijon mustard, 1/4 cup sour cream, 1 Tbs. minced red onion, 1 Tbs. packed light brown sugar, 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 tsp. hot pepper sauce, 24 large shrimp, peeled and deveined, about 1 lb., 1/2 tsp. dried thyme, 12 slices bacon, halved crosswise, wooden toothpicks. Directions: In small bowl, combine mustard, sour cream, onion, sugar Worcestershire sauce and pepper sauce; cover and refrigerate. Sprinkle shrimp with thyme. Wrap 1 half-slice bacon around each shrimp; secure with toothpick. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add shrimp; cook, turning once, until shrimp are cooked through and bacon is crisp, 5-6 minutes per side. Remove toothpicks; arrange on platter. Serve warm with sauce.

True Stories about Real People

Today our world is filled with computers of all types and sizes. That wasn't the case in the sixties. Here is a story about an exceptional woman that played a part in the evolution of the conveniences of communication we have today.

Grace Hopper loved to take apart all kinds of mechanical items. At the age of seven she managed to dismantle every clock in her family's home. As she grew up mathematics was one of her favorite subjects and that continued through her college years where she eventually received a doctorate in mathematics at Yale University. World War II came about, she joined the Navy and they put her to work in their computation project at Harvard University. She was to learn about a special machine called, "Harvard Mark I". It was the first functional, digital computing machine and quite a challenge.

"Harvard Mark I" had seven hundred fifty thousand parts and five hundred miles of wire and they wanted Grace to figure out how to make the system easier to operate. She helped develop a programming language COBOL.

In 1963 every computer had its own language. Grace felt that a universal language was needed and worked towards that objective. Not only that but she believed that computers would eventually be small enough to sit on a desk, be more powerful that "Harvard Mark I" and people would use them all over the world in all kinds of environments. She retired from the Navy at the youthful age of seventy-nine as a rear admiral and saw all of her expectations come to pass.

A Book in Progress -- Do you have a story to share?

March’s Chuckle

A gnome is in the garden busily destroying some bushes when a house cat appears. "What are you?" asks the cat.

"A gnome," comes the reply, "I steal food from humans. I kill their plants. I make annoying music at night to drive them crazy, and I love mischief. And what, may I ask, are you?"

The cat replies, "Um, I'm a gnome." ~~Blake Kiltoff

Happy St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is here, you see.
We'll pick some shamrocks, one, two, three.
We'll count the leaves and look them over,
And maybe find a four-leafed clover.
I'll sew green buttons on my vest,
Green for St. Patrick is the best.
I'll wear a green hat, very high,
And dance a jig--at least I'll try!
