Power Thought for May

“You are a winner because of the way you live…not because you don’t die.”  ~~Bernie Siegal

A Moment with Donna...

Small Steps

Push, push, push!  Rush, rush, rush!

Do you ever feel like you are shackled to a scarlet hamsters’ wheel that just keeps turning and turning and you are going nowhere fast?  Do you ever stop and look at your life and wonder…where do I want to be and why am I continuing to run, run, run in the same circle cycle over and over again?  Are you feeling so overwhelmed that you forget to take time for yourself, to reign yourself in so you can make some evaluations about what is most important to you?  Is being constantly busy a status symbol in this world of drama we live in?

I will jokingly tell my friends that the reason women live longer than men is that we can’t afford to die.  There is always a toilet to clean, a baby to burp, problems to solve and the work is always there, never done.  Remember the multi-tasking woman song Patti Page used to sing…’I am woman, hear me roar’, etc, etc.  I don’t know about you but I am finding that it is getting easier to have conversations with dust bunnies that to become frantic about picking them up.  Sometime you just have to set time aside for yourself so you can figure out what your priorities are.

A few weeks ago when I was doing a public appearance a gentleman came up to me, his name was Bill, and told me he had been saving all of my newsletters since he had started receiving them in the early nineties.  He said he was amazed at how I put the newsletter together and had new information in it every month; how did I manage to do it?  I told him that many times I honestly didn’t know what I was going to write about but I would keep my eyes and ears open and amazingly some topic always presented itself.  Many times I would do my outline and add items in a piecemeal pattern and bingo…it was ready to mail out.

It is like writing a book- you do one word at a time that turns into a sentence, then into a paragraph and soon you have filled a page. As you continue eventually you have the manuscript.  It takes one step at a time consistently applied in a constant direction of choice and the job is done.  Small steps, one at a time, can carry you great distances and you’ll arrive at your destination perhaps more rested and aware than someone who is rushing, trying to take all kinds of short cuts and finding – like the story of the tortoise and the hare – they created more obstacles for themselves than necessary.

Have you ever wanted to change a habit you didn’t like?  When you mindfully choose another choice and deliberately do a replacement habit over and over again it will eventually eliminate the old habit and you’ll wonder why you made such a big issue out of it-questioning why it took so long for you to realize how easy it was to change.  Ben Franklin kept a log where he recorded his actions for the day.  He consciously recognized that it was his thinking and the patterns of his actions, along with his habits that had to be disciplined if he was to be successful.  Consistency, repetition and being attentive does work, these small consistent steps get results.

Bill Nolan, an award winning science fiction writer and author of Logan’s Run, Autobiography of Steve McQueen and 84 other books, not including hundreds of other articles and publications told me last week that his goal is to write and publish 100 books.  He writes every day. Bill has developed disciplines through the years that today enable him to publish comic books about Logan’s Run and other authored characters.  He also is involved in movies and productions of various types. I am amazed at what he has accomplished since I first met him in the ‘80’s but he just takes one day at a time and does what he can, even if it is writing only one sentence or paragraph.

Life is for living now.  Whatever one wants to change or improve when you take the time to think through what is most important you’ll determine the steps you’ll need to take to get there.  Start where you are, dump the past, and begin to consciously be attentive to your environment and what you see as the changes that need to be made.  Whether it is cleaning up the clutter in the office, spending more time with your loved ones or writing a book – outline the steps you need to take to achieve what you desire.  One step at a time, one day at a time and you’ll be amazed at how much you’ll accomplish.

Donna Seebo                    Have a fabulous day.

The Recipe Box – Hearty Appetite Deep Dish Pizza

Pizza is the staff of life – as far as the American palate is concerned- and it is truly a wonderful medium for leftovers that otherwise would end up in the garbage can. Pizza can be as healthy as you want to make it- the only limitation is your imagination.  Here is a simple recipe that you may want to try and you can add or subtract whatever you like.  Remember you get to choose and if you have kids let them choose what ingredients that they want to add to their creation.

Ingredients: 8 oz. sweet (or spicy) Italian sausage, cut into 1” pieces, 1 cup thawed frozen cocktail-size meatballs-4 oz. halved, 1 green pepper- thinly sliced, 1 onion-thinly sliced, 1 cup sliced mushrooms, 1/4 cup sliced pepperoni-halved, 1/4 cup pitted black olives-halved, 1 cup pizza sauce, 15-16 oz. pizza dough (if frozen-thaw at room temperature) 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese-6oz., 1 Tbs. chopped fresh parsley.

Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat 13’X 9” baking pan with cooking spray. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage, meatballs, pepper, onion and mushrooms; cook, stirring often, until sausage is no longer pink and vegetables are tender, 12-15 minutes. Press dough into pan; spread sauce over dough to within 1” of edge. Sprinkle with ½ cup cheese; top with meat and vegetable mixture, then remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake 15-20 minutes or until dough is cooked through and cheese has melted.  Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

True Stories about Real People

Erma Brombeck was an extraordinary and humorous writer.  I thought I would share with you some of her thoughts that came out of one of her publications.  She wrote, “In retrospect, it was only a matter of time before the Family Dinner Hour passed into history and fast foods took over…My pot roast gave way to pizza.  My burgers couldn’t compete with the changing numbers under the Golden Arches. I couldn’t even do chicken…right!

The old rules for eating at home – sit up straight, chew your food, and don’t laugh with cottage cheese in your mouth – didn’t fit the new ambiance. A new set of rules emerged.” Erma suggested these among the new rules: 1) When ordering from the back seat of the car, do not cup your mouth over Daddy’s ear and shout. 2) Never order more than you can balance between your knees. 3) Front-of-the-car seating is better than back seat if you have a choice. The dashboard offers space for holding beverages. 4) Afterward, each person should be responsible for his/her trash and should contain it in a bag. Two-week-old onion rings in the ashtray are not a pretty sight.”

Times have changed and I wonder what Erma would say about  twittering, mobile phones, internet and the many other fast moving evolutions of today’s world?

Authors-Special Mention

Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place.  You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.

.  Here are my three picks for interesting reading for May.

1)      Pope Annalesia by Peter Kanavos.  This is an incredible novel that deals with today’s issues on so many levels with a phenomenal plot that will leave you enthusiastically ready for the second book in this upcoming trilogy.

2)      A Cup of Cappuccino for the Entrepreneurs Soul by Cindy Thompson.  Entrepreneurs make this world go round in the financial arena because they are willing to take risks, daring to go where others fear to tread.  A collection of interviews this book is inspiring and timely in this economically challenging time.

3)      The 1000 Mile Stare by Gary Reiswig.  If you or someone you know is dealing with the issue of Alzheimer’s’ this is a must read book.  Gary’s story tells of his own family’s experience with this disease and how a gene contributes to it being passed along to other family members. It will touch your heart and educate you in a new level of understanding of Alzheimer’s.

The Stages of Motherhood

Here is a light hearted presentation of what we all think about our moms, at different points of our lives.  Don't get surprised because we all have the same tendency towards our mothers!

4 Years Of Age - My Mommy can do anything;
8 Years Of Age - My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot
12 Years Of Age -My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 Years Of Age -Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either
16 Years Of Age -Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned
18 Years Of Age -That old woman? She's way out of date
25 Years Of Age -Well, she might know a little bit about it
35 Years Of Age -Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion
45 Years Of Age -Wonder what Mom would have thought about it
65 Years Of Age -Wish, I could talk it over with Mom

Happy Mother’s Day

"Happy Mother's Day" means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things
We never get to say.

It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.

But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day,
With pleasure and with love.
