Power Thought for January
“Don't Accept Anything Less Than the Best You Can Be.”
Learn never to blame another for the pain you feel, nor to complain about anything that life brings to your door; but this doesn't mean to be accepting of those who would see you ache, nor should you be apathetic in the face of anything that challenges your hopes and aspirations.

A Moment with Donna
........... Dirty Gutters
“Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.” ~Author Unknown
When you own a home there is always maintenance to be done. I became aware of the need to clean our house gutters when waterfalls of water and dirt cascaded from our roof onto our back sidewalk and front driveway. Cleaning gutters is not high on my to-do list but they had to be cleaned out otherwise the roof could be damaged by water getting underneath the roofing itself. So one brisk, sunshiny winter day I put on my grubbies, hauled out the ladder, put on rubber gloves and went to work.
Balancing carefully on the upper steps of the ladder I dug my glove covered hand into the soaked mucky mess inside the depth of the gutter trough. As I pulled out my first handful of the decomposing leaves, needles, and dirt the first thing that assaulted my nose was the stench of the decaying mass I held in my hand. Whew! What a stink! Continuing to reach inside the gutter, one handful at a time, the debris was cleared out. Slowly, but surely, the compacted material loosened up. I was amazed at how much had accumulated. As I continued to scoop out the muddy gunk thoughts began to run through my mind. How often do we allow accumulation of trash old thoughts, outdated beliefs, fears and false understanding - clog up our clarity of purpose, action, capacity to dream, change direction, to take charge of our life’s script? It is so easy to get clogged up, to become lazy, avoid being present with ourselves and how we truly desire to live our lives. How many times do we endure stinky, smelly messes in our lives without recognizing it is up to us to clean them up?
At one point there was a section of gutter I just couldn’t reach and later when it rained a cascading waterfall again flowed over the spot I hadn’t cleared out. Obviously I would have to use a tool to push the stinky debris into a position where I could clear it out. Don’t we have to do the same thing when we get stuck in life? How many times do we work hard for change and find that we haven’t done everything we could to push the ‘dead debris’ out of our space? Sometimes we may need the help of a tool or a mentor that can educate us as to what we can do to help ourselves.
As I finished my messy work and was putting the ladder away I looked up at the now cleaned gutters and raindrops starting falling on my face. I felt good about getting the work done in time to handle the water from the upcoming storm, however, I also realized that the cleaning would have to be done again in a few months. Cleaning gutters in an on-going job. Every season brings its own dirt and debris. So it is with life. It is an on-going job to stay mindfully present about what needs to be done daily, what patterns and scripts of action we want to follow. Keeping perspectives and objectives clear is a do-it-yourself job. There is always a need to clear up and out what no longer serves us so we can attract what is appropriate. Regular reviews are required so we don’t clog up the works, blocking ourselves from maximizing our greatest potentials. Freedom and free flow in life has to be cared for. Regular maintenance is necessary. Questioning, exploration, education and execution of thoughtful action are our tools to use responsibly.
We are now in a New Year 2011. Whatever your resolutions may be give yourself the gift of time. Grab a pad of paper and pen, find a quiet place and start writing. On sheet #1 make a list of the blessings you experienced in 2010, this is a list of gratitude. Sheet #2 list what you would like to change in your life and why. Sheet #3 list what you think will be required to achieve the desires you have and think about what tools, actions, mentors you may need to utilize for purposeful action. Sheet #4 draw a diagram of objectives for the year. Design a plan to achieve what you want. Determine your timelines for implementation of your plan and set a date to review your progress. Perhaps you’ll want to keep a journal so you’ll have notes to go over.
We all have very busy lives and unsettling curves of disruption can easily throw us off course. However, just like cleaning a gutter it is one action at a time followed by another that eventually clears the blockages and then opportunity flows freely and easily. This is your life and a New Year lies in front of you. So clean out the stinky decomposing gunk that no longer serves you, rewrite your script and let the good times greet you with open arms.
May you, those you love-dear friends and family-know love, joy, excellent health, prosperity and fulfillment of passionate purpose this New Year 2011.

The Recipe Box
Champagne Fruit Salad
If you have any left-over champagne this is a delightfully light recipe to have handy. You actually can use any kind of champagne and if you want to decorate the rims of your serving glasses use different colored sugars. Dip the rim of each glass into water shake off the excess then dip into sugar to coat the rim. Then fill the glasses accordingly. Pretty, low in calories but delicious it definitely is a wonderful way to start a Sunday breakfast in a different way. For children you can use sparkling cider.
Ingredients: 1 can (11 oz.) mandarin oranges, 1Tbs. superfine sugar, 2 tsp. grated orange zest, 1 pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into small chunks, about 3 cups, 3 cups strawberries - quartered, 1 cup blueberries, 1 bottle of chilled champagne, fresh mint sprigs for garnish (optional)
Directions: Drain mandarin oranges, reserving 1/4cup syrup. In large bowl, combine sugar, orange zest and reserved syrup. Add oranges, pineapple, strawberries and blueberries and toss gently. Just before serving, divide fruit mixture among 12 glasses. Pour champagne over fruit. Garnish with mint if desired.

True Stories about Real People
This is an example of how our words can affect someone and change their life pattern dramatically.
Pitcher Orel Hershiser was called to the office of Dodgers General Manager Tommy Lasorda. Orel was expecting the worst. As a relief pitcher his performance was less than desirable. Once Lasorda had Orel in his office he didn’t focus on what the young man was doing wrong instead he said, “You don’t believe in yourself! You’re scared to pitch in the big leagues! Who do you think these hitters are, Babe Ruth? Ruth’s dead! You’ve got good stuff. If you didn’t I wouldn’t have brought you up. I’ve seen guys come and go son and you’ve got it! You gotta go out there and do it on the mound. Be a bulldog out there. That’s gonna be your new name: Bulldog. Bulldog Hershiser. I want you, starting today, to believe you are the best pitcher in baseball. I want you to look at that hitter and say to yourself, “There’s no way you can ever hit me. ‘”
Whenever Orel would talk about Tommy Lasorda he stated how he couldn’t get over that Tommy felt he was worth every bit of his time and effort. He said, “Tommy believed I had more potential. He believed I had big league stuff.”
By the way, the next game Orel played he pitched for three innings and gave up only one hit.

Author Special Mention for January
Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place. You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.
Here are my three picks for interesting reading for January.
1. Intimacy after Breast Cancer by Gina Maisano. Breast cancer is an experience that can be overwhelming on so many levels. Gina addresses so many concerns by men and women both. It is an outstanding, down-to-earth publication.
2. The Great Penguin Rescue by Dyan deNapoli. Can you imagine rescuing 40,000 wild penguins? This story is amazing and almost unbelievable, however, it is true and inspiring in a phenomenal way.
3. Sexual Outlaw, Erotic Mystic by Vere Chappell. This is a story about a woman who had great courage in a time when discussing sex on any level was taboo. This is about a woman who helped set the stage for the liberation of women that enabled us to reach the freedoms we enjoy today.
