Power Thought for June

“A state, in which the citizens are compelled or actuated by means of a dictator to obey even the best laws, might be a tranquil, peaceable, prosperous State; but it would always seem to me a multitude of well-cared-for slaves, rather than a nation of free and independent men with no restraint save such as was required to present any infringement on right.”  ~~Wilhelm von Humboldt

A Moment with Donna

…….Challenging Times

It is a lovely spring evening here in the Pacific Northwest.  The sun is shining brightly and we can for the moment put away our kayaks and other floating devices.  We have had so much rain and gray skies that one wonders if web feet and full spectrum lighting should be the standard for the Pacific Northwesterner.

Regardless we are a hardy group and getting together with others for a visit, a glass of wine and a few munchies usually chases the grey away. As is always the case there are stories to share and new things to be learned.

On a recent Thursday evening a group of us got together for a Ladies Night Out. We sat in front of a fireplace cozy and warm while brisk winds blew and raindrops drizzled outside. We had a wonderful waitress; I’ll call her Tammy, who waited on us.  She was terrific giving us information on the specials, answering questions and dealing with late arrivals. Vivacious, attentive, humorous and patient she made us feel like we were her only patrons. The six of us chatted with her and I believe because we were so open and friendly she shared personal information.  Her 11 year old daughter had died from cancer 9 months ago, her husband died in 2009 and the trauma of losing two of the most important people in her life so close together almost killed her. Yet she had decided to go back to school to get a degree so she could help others survive such hardship. We all listened with compassion and empathy; cheering her on, encouraging her to meet her goals regardless of the stress and frustrations of working and going to school at the same time.

Two days ago I was in a meeting and after sharing a story about a woman who had survived WWII Jaynie talked about an elderly woman who had come into her retirement facility carrying a duffle bag that weighed more than she did.  This petite, elderly woman in her 80’s asked to rent an apartment. Jaynie told her this wasn’t typical as the apartments needed furniture and it was  strange for someone to just walk in and ask for one; the request was quite unusual.  This tiny lady apparently had been in a medical facility nearby and had seen the building.  She had been released from the medical environment and had the shuttle driver drop her off so she could get her apartment. When Jaynie showed concern about this lady not having what she would need in her new apartment the lady promptly responded saying, “Everything I need is in the duffle bag.  I can easily do without furniture for a few days.  It is no big deal. During WWII I escaped being captured by the Germans by living in a dark basement and sleeping on a dirt floor for a long time. I survived that and I certainly can do without furniture for a few days.” For this woman the concerns that Jaynie had were of no consequence as she had survived much, much worse.  She could handle these simple circumstances easily.

Each of these women though generations apart had gone through very tough times.  They determined how they were going to handle them and also, how they were going to handle their futures.  Each had their story and each determined to take charge of their lives and circumstances to the best of their capacities.

This month we honor women on Mother’s Day and also on Memorial Day the veterans who have sacrificed so much for the rights and privileges we enjoy today. Take time to listen to their stories.  In listening you may come to realize that your gift to them is your attention, your empathy and your willingness to learn from what they have experienced; giving loving acceptance of who they are right now in this moment.  In the process you may discover a part of yourself that you never knew existed and learn something new that can empower your life in a whole new way. After all we all enjoy a good story….don’t we?

One day your story may touch someone’s life in a special way just like these two ladies touched mine.

Have a fabulous month.

The Recipe Box

Lemon Meringue Stuffed Baked French Toast

If you have a sweet tooth that begs to be fed this recipe is phenomenal.  I think it would be awesome for a Sunday Brunch or any time when you want to ‘wow’ your guests and family with something special.  Enjoy!!!

Ingredients: 4 eggs, 2 cups half-and-half, 1/4 cup + 9 Tbls. sugar, 1 Tsp. vanilla extract, 1 loaf (1 lb.) day-old challah or egg bread, cut in 3⁄4” slices, 1 can (15.75 oz.) lemon pie filling, 2 Tsp. grated lemon zest, 3/4 cup cold water, 3 Tbls. meringue powder.

Directions: 1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat 2 1/2-qt baking dish with cooking spray. In bowl, whisk eggs with half-and-half, 1/4 cup sugar and vanilla until blended. Dip half of bread slices into egg mixture (do not soak bread; about half of egg mixture should remain after dipping). Arrange bread in single layer in baking dish. 2) In bowl, combine pie filling and zest; spread over bread layer. Arrange remaining bread in single layer over filling. Pour remaining egg moisture over top. Cover with foil. Bake 50 minutes. 3) Meanwhile, on medium-high speed, beat water and meringue powder with remaining 9 Tbls. sugar until stiff peaks form, 2-3 minutes. Remove baking dish from oven; uncover. Increase oven temperature to 425 degrees. Spread meringue over top of casserole. Bake until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

True Stories about Real People

Daddy’s Poem

Her hair was up in a pony tail, her favorite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go. But her mommy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home, why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone. But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today. But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home. But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees a dad who never calls. There were daddies along the wall in back, for everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats.

One by one the teacher called a student from the class to introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed. At last the teacher called her name, every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, a man who wasn't there. "Where's her daddy at?" She heard a boy call out. "She probably doesn't have one," another student dared to shout. And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say, "Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day."

The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mom and looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on. And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique. "My Daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day. And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know all about my daddy, and how much he loves me so. He loved to tell me stories, he taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, and taught me to fly a kite. We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him, I'm not standing here alone. Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart I know because he told me, he'll forever be in my heart"

With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest. Feeling her own heartbeat beneath her favorite dress, and from somewhere there in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years for she stood up for the love of a man not in her life. Doing what was best for her, doing what was a right.

And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd. She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud. "I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star. And if he could, he'd be here, but heaven's just too far. You see he is an American Soldier and died just this past year when a roadside bomb hit his convoy and taught Americans to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away." And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day.

And to her mother's amazement, she witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children, all starting to close their eyes. Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side.

"I know you're with me Daddy," to the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers of those once filled with doubt. Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.

And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, by the love of her shining star and given the gift of believing, that heaven is never too far. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Each month I interview 20-25 authors and they all have something special to contribute to making this world a better place.  You can find out about each of them by going to www.bbsradio.com Station One and look up what is listed for the month and a brief summary of information for each publication.

.  Here are my three picks for interesting reading for June.

1.      Uncle Al Capone by Deidre Capone. Can you imagine being related to one of the most infamous criminals in American history? This book is a fascinating read.

2.      Powerful Medicine by Lucinda Messer. Vitamin D is in the news quite regularly now.  This publication gives you the real lowdown on the facts on this necessary nutritional supplementation.

3.      The Artist’s Journey by Marcia Shaver.  Not many of us choose to take a journey for self-discovery as this woman has.  The artwork in the book is wonderful and is a fine accompaniment to the unique adventure Marcia made.

June’s Chuckle

While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... "Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust."
