A Moment with Donna

......The Dynamics of Attitude

     

Daylight hours are diminishing. I just today set the computer for the heater to turn on after months of it being silent. The soft whirring sounds of the heater fan pushing warm air through the vents makes one aware that the temperature is dropping quickly. Rain is on its way in for a visit and the Pacific Northwest is in full fall colors.  When you are out walking and have a chance to see the brilliant red, gold, and orange colors filling giant trees where there was once deep rich green a depth of appreciation fills you.  You realize that Mother Nature is a wondrous phenomenon to be enjoyed to the fullest.

                  A few days ago I was on a business trip to California.  To pick up my rental car a shuttle met me at the airport and I met a wonderful young woman who had the brightest smile and attitude I have ever encountered as a shuttle driver.  We had a wonderful short chat before she dropped me off at my destination. I told her how impressed I was with her joyful attitude and smile, that I didn’t encounter it often with drivers.  She just grinned at me and said, “I am healthy, have a roof over my head, two beautiful children, a job I enjoy and good food to eat.  I am blessed and grateful for all of it. Why shouldn’t I be happy?”

                  When I dropped off my rental car to go to the airport to come home to my delight in walked Carolyn, the same driver I had had just a few days before. This time on the way to the airport we had more time for conversation. I complimented her again on her bright disposition.  She told me how she almost died from loss of blood due to huge fibroid tumors that were causing serious hemorrhaging internally. However, when she went to see her doctor he immediately recognized the seriousness of her condition and rushed her to the hospital.  It saved her life. She said, “I have had to have 4 blood transfusions but today I am strong and healthy, can lift weights and am determined to take care of myself so I don’t have a repeat of what I have gone through.  Good health is precious and you have to take care of yourself. You know how it is with we women we always put everybody else first and ourselves last. Not me…not anymore!  If I can’t take care of me how can I help anyone else?”

                  Carolyn is a woman with ‘Attitude’ and I can tell you that the brightness of her wisdom touches a lot of people in multiple ways. Personal responsibility is a deep essence of her life and she is teaching it to her family, friends and everyone else she meets because she ‘walks her talk’. 

                  Just as the seasons change so life peppers us with various challenges. We don’t need a near-death experience to wake up to the fact that we can take charge of our lives, our attitudes and our actions.  Pity pots are very confining and not fun to wallow in.

                  Scarecrows are popping up everywhere, pumpkins are gracing front porches and creative people are already starting to prepare for a favorite festival of fall – Halloween! It is time for celebration and appreciation for a season that brings with it lots of gifts. May you and your family enjoy this delightful time with fullness of heart and spirit.

Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potatoes are delicious and a wonderful healthy alternative to everyday French fries.  Here is a simple recipe that is sure to please just about everyone.  Enjoy1

Ingredients: 1 pound unpeeled sweet potatoes, 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, 1 tsp. kosher salt and more if you want it.

Directions: Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut sweet potatoes crosswise on a slight diagonal into 3/8-inch slices. Cut each slice lengthwise into 1/4-inch-wide sticks (about 2 inches long). In a mixing bowl, combine with olive oil and salt. Spread sticks out in one layer on baking sheet, scraping all the oil and salt from the bowl onto them. Roast for 20 minutes. Flip sticks over and continue cooking, flipping once or twice more, until fries are nicely browned, about another 10 minutes.  Serve with favorite dipping sauce.

A Touch of History – ‘Little Richard’

For All Of You ‘Little Richard’ Fans Out There, This Will Blow Your Socks Off Just Watching How His Talent Showed Through At Such An Early Age.

 This is amazing to see. It's Richard Wayne Penniman (aka Little Richard) about fifteen years before "Tutti Frutti, oh Rudy...." If you're familiar with early period Beatles, you'll know that McCartney was heavily influenced by Little Richard. A-whop bop-a-lu bop a-whop bam boom!!!

October’s Chuckle

After an enthusiastic recommendation from my wife, I began listening to the audio book version of Frank McCourt’s ‘Teacher Man’.

“I love it, but his writing style is so disjointed,” I complained. “He refers to characters I don’t know and introduces them a half hour later.”

My wife was as confused as I was, but I soldiered on, disoriented by the jumpy story line. It wasn’t until the end of the book that my dilemma was explained-I had set the iPod to Shuffle.

This summer, Philips and director/producer Ridley Scott launched a global filmmaking competition dubbed "Tell It Your Way" following its Cannes Lions award-winning short-film project "Parallel Lines." The entrants were given freedom of expression and could take up any theme they wanted. There were two strict rules—the dialogue could be precisely six-lines (as it was in the ‘Parallel Lines’ films), and entries could not exceed three minutes.
