"Fear of the future is a waste of the present." Author Unknown
As I am writing this editorial Canadian geese are flying over our home in their 'v' formation, honking loudly as if to say, "We're Baacckk!" Spring in the Northwest is really strutting her stuff, pushing up her bright yellow daffodils and colorful tulips, heralding the process of the wonderful production of life that gives Spring a special magic. "Wake Up! Wake Up! Today is a new day, live it to the fullest!" That's what Lady Spring seems to be saying with great enthusiasm.
This year Spring's call was welcomed in a whole new way. We went on a grey whale cruise through the San Juan Islands. What an experience! The cruise was two hours and we not only saw the 'greys' but seals, cormorants and other critters as well.
During the entire trip I stayed in the bow area, enjoying the wind, the fragrances that come with being out on the water and the wonderful changing views that surrounded us as we traveled about the San Juan Islands. To see the whales you had to watch for sprays of water from their blowholes. They were moving constantly. You never knew when or where they would surface so you had to pay attention, constantly scanning the water for their telltale signs when they came up. It was exciting and lots of fun.
While on the boat it was easy to observe how nothing was truly still and quiet, all of nature flows in its own rhythm. Someone made a comment that 30% of the water in Puget Sound constantly circulates, flowing in and out to the ocean and the rest stays inside its pocket. If that 30% didn't circulate the entire Puget Sound would stagnate, become polluted, destroying all life within its environment.
We're the same way. Stagnation can affect any of us at any time. We all get immersed in our daily routines and responsibilities, developing habits that sometimes get in the way of growing, expanding and living our lives to their fullest. Stagnation, in my mind, represents no movement, change or growth. Stagnation frequently forces change because we can't stand the 'stinking' non-productive space we have immersed ourselves into.
A good example is a person I know that was working in a well paying job but constantly was complaining about the supervisor, working conditions and various other situations. We had a chance to chat and it didn't take long to see that it wasn't the job that was bad but her attitude about it. She was bored out of her mind and she was staying with her position because she was afraid of losing her security, creating change. After we dealt with the 'bare bones'
of her situation she realized it was up to her to create the changes she wanted in her life. She could start right where she was and move forward. Changing her perspective and putting herself in the power position of choice, she started the planning and action that would empower her life to grow into what she wanted it to be.
Do you feel 'stuck'? Here are a few thoughts that may help you work through the situation.
1) Be honest with yourself. Ask'What is eating at me?'
2) Realize you are 'the boss' in your life. You are responsible for paying attention to who you are, what you want and where you want to be.
3) Stop blaming others. Be responsible for your choices. Start climbing towards results of change.
4) Realize it may take some time to do what you have to do, to achieve/reach where you want to go.
5) Live in the now. Appreciate that this is the best day of your life. Savor the gifts, whether it is a smile, a call from a friend or a kiss from a puppy.
Life like the sea is ever changing, circulating its force in unseen ways, with unlimited and colorful horizons. Stagnation doesn't have a chance if you go with its flow, life's flow that is. Open your heart, mind and spirit to the energy of Spring and like the geese, whales and all other living creatures you'll 'shoo' stagnation out of your space, moving into action with enthusiasm.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
This one should bring a 'sparkle of joy' to your day.
The Pastor's Cat..Dwight Nelson recently told a true story about the pastor of his church. He had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.
He did! All the while, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved a little further forward, the rope broke.
The tree went "booooing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air- out of sight.
The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business.
A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?"
She replied, "You won't believe this," and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it!" ( Can you see where this is heading?)
She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the yard and ask God for a cat. And really Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread and landed right in front of her!!!"
