THE RUNAWAY MIND ©

On Wednesday of this week I was working in my office when the phone rang. Upon answering it I soon was having a conversation with a client and found myself talking about the next day. In my mind it was Thursday and my scheduling for a meeting on Friday was going to be difficult. In
the course of the conversation I discovered my error realizing that I was mentally a day ahead of myself. We had a good laugh about it all and everything worked out wonderfully well as soon as I straightened out my thinking.

Do you ever find you are so efficient that you get ahead of yourself and turn things around like I did? The old saying, "The hurrier I go, he behinder I get!" certainly applied to me. The mind is an incredible instrument but it sure can cause havoc when not disciplined and controlled.

What is the mind? Ever given much thought about it? Frequently when people speak of the mind and its processes they are really talking about the brain, it's mechanics and processing capacity to coordinate mental and physical actions. The mind encompasses a great deal; processes
information, reasoning, feelings, perception, intuition, determination , conscious and subconscious activity of thought.

A runaway mind causes confusion, frustration, disorganization, agitation and various other disorders that can affect us physically, mentally and emotionally. In these fast moving times of today, it is so easy to get sidetracked mentally. How can we manage to harness our minds so they work properly for us and not against us?

Imagine yourself an artist. You have before you a clean, white canvas stretched tightly over a frame. It is nice, large and easy to work with. Now, what will you put on it? A design? A country scene?
Perhaps a script with color and various shapes to enhance a meaning? Will you be delicate or bold in expression?

As ideas flow, you may scribble notes, doodle, to determine what you think you want. At some point as you are going through this process you have to choose your theme. Once doing this you have to focus on the theme as the canvas can only hold so much.. You want to convey, with clarity, your image of what you want on this blank canvas. Sometimes, n going through this process, you get a better idea and scrap your original concept. Maybe you go through a lot of questioning and find yourself frustrated because you cannot define your focus, your image. It can be very inhibiting if you let your mind run away with too much 'stuff'.

So, what do you do? As the artist you are the boss. It is up to you to determine your focus, your theme. You may find you have 20 or 30 choices but you need to pick the top three that are the most important. Then, from those three, choose the one that is the most significant. At that point you can pick up your pencil, sketch out your ideas and then fill in the colors and details. You relax and just focus on the one theme. As you go along you find you can add choice number two and then three. Somehow everything that you were so anxious to express flows together in a most wonderful design of your own personal expression. Before you know it you are able to finish your canvas and display its beauty for all to see.

Mental discipline is a constant and consistent practice. Here are a few of the steps I use when my 'runaway mind' starts getting the best of me:

1) I stop my mental rambling and pull in the 'reins' and take a break. Sometimes that means taking a walk around the block, fixing a cup of tea, listening to music or best of all, just telling myself to 'shut up' and be quiet.

2) I go to my library of inspirational materials and pull something out to organize my thinking the way I want it to be.

3) I ask myself if my worries, anxious frustrations will change anything or even matter 100 years from now. The answer usually is no, it won't. When I reach this point it is easy to smile, get back on track and realize I have a lot to be grateful for. Then it is back to doing what needs to be done and take care of what is most important

I came across a quote that says, "It is a mistake to look too far ahead. Only one link of the chain of destiny can be handled at a time." Take command of your day and your life. After all you are the artist, the creator of your mental world. Enjoy the experience of living, growing into the wonderful person you are. ~ Donna Seebo

CHUCKLE FOR FEBRUARY

Subject: Boyfriend 5.0

Dear Tech Support: Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed that the new program began making unexpected changes to the accounting modules, limiting access to flower and jewelry applications that had operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0. In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.9 but installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0 and NBZ 3.0. conversation 8.0 no longer runs and HouseCleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these
problems, but to no avail. Signed, 'Desperate'

Dear Desperate: Keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an entertainment package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system. Try to enter the command: >C:/I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME and install Tears 6.2. Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications: Guilty 3.0 and Flowers 7.0. But remember overuse can cause Husband 1.0 to default to GrumpySilence 2.5, HappyHour 7.0 or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad
program that will create "Snoring Loudly" wave files. DO NOT install MotherInLaw 1.0 or reinstall another Boyfriend program. These are not supported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly. Consider buying additional software to improve performance. I personally recommend HotFood 5.0 and Lingerie 3.0. Signed, Tech Support

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
Animals are a significant part of life. This story reminds us of how
very special our pets can be in.

" I live in a very isolated rural area near a lake with two loving companions, 'Khadji, an afghan and my other dog Grizwold.

Afghans are not known for their intelligence. However, this is my story about a particular day that proved that belief false.

Khadji was one year old. Grizwold and Khadji were outside playing in the snow. Our family had just recently moved to the new home on the lake and we were unaware of how dangerous it would prove to be. The lake water was just beginning to freeze and the ice wasn't as solid as it appeared to be.

While in the kitchen fixing dinner, a loud, crashing sound comes from our sliding door. I rush over to see if it is broken and there she stands. Khadji! She sees me and runs off. When I don't pay attention she again runs into the glass door, watches me, then runs away. She does this three times. Very upset, I open the sliding door, scolding her while I chase her through the yard. She leads me to the lake and proceeds to walk out onto the ice. I follow, quickly realizing that the ice is cracking underneath my feet. Frightened that Khadji may fall through the ice, I beg her to come to me. She ignores me. Instead, she dances excitedly about in a circle, barking.

It is getting dark quickly and I can hardly see. Finally I noticed that what she is dancing about isn't ice but water. There is something dark, it is moving and bobbing above the ice. I can almost make it out. It has a black nose and long snout of some kind of animal. My heart pounds with fear when I realize it is my beloved Grizz. I have to
think quickly.

We were building a deck and some 2 by 8's were still lying by the lake's edge. Quickly I grab one, place it on the lake bank's edge, extending it as far out as I can on the ice. I step on the edge of the board, carefully making my way so the other end will dip down into the dark, watery hole Grizz is in. If I'm lucky, I can grab Grizz and pull him out. Hypothermia takes only 6 minutes to stop all muscle movement and I was hoping my dog hadn't been in the water too long.

I can hear the weight of the board cracking the ice. As the far end dips into the icy waters, Grizz's paws grips its surface, enabling me to grab him and lift him out of danger. Both Grizz and I jump to safety off of the sinking board. Khadji jumps with us.

Carrying Grizz home, we put him into a tub of warm water, drying and wrapping him up in warm towels, then put him in front of the warmth of the fireplace. We stay with him all night. Khadji lay right next to him, checking him frequently to be sure he is all right

The next morning, we take Grizz to the vet. Amazingly he has no frostbite or effects from hypothermia. Khadji, our afghan, had saved his life by risking her own. Are Afghans dumb? I don't think so!"
