"I Spy".do you remember playing that game when you were little?
This past Tuesday evening that childhood game was brought back into my experience as I sat in the backseat of a minivan with a 3-? year old, a little girl named Elana. Enroute to a meeting in Seattle she wasn't about to just sit quietly, no, the time was to be used playing one of her favorite games, 'I Spy'. I was given strict instructions as to how the game was to be played. You always start out with the words – "I see with my little eye."
As I played this game with Elana lots of thoughts marched through my adult mind. Here is this little girl playing a game of observation, calling attention to details of color. She is strapped in her safety seat, has limited vision but is playing her game with an adult who has much more flexibility, experience and a better view of possibilities and that doesn't bother her at all!
We all start out like Elana, looking at life with 'our little eye'. But there comes a time that we should grow up and out of our limited vision to see a bigger picture – to use our 'big eye'. What does the 'big eye' see? Possibilities, dreams and desires. Curiosity encourages enthusiasm and that supports exploration into development of our highest capabilities.
You may wonder where I am going with this. I think William James said it very well, "Compared to what we ought to be, we are only half awake. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources. Stating the thing broadly, the human individual thus lives far within his limits. He possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use."
Too often we feel stuck – stuck in ruts of everyday monotony that blind us to what is going on around us. We stagnate with mediocrity and then wonder why we are bored, uninterested in life. We have – for all intents and purposes – reverted to using our 'little eye' of self, feeling strapped in, confined and frustrated. We regress to limiting, childish attitudes of expecting others to make our life experience bigger and better than what we are living in the moment.. Personal responsibility? What's that? If my life isn't working, it is obviously someone else's fault, not mine!
How do you break the patterns that aren't working for you? Open up your attitudes, be unafraid of failures, disappointments and face your fears. We all have them. Let curiosity lead you. Expand your mental attitudes with new horizons of interest. Take action. Sign up for a drama class, join a hiking club, visit the elderly in rest homes, go to the library and read books on topic you have always wanted to find out about or maybe take a trip to an area you have never visited before. Make a point of doing something different at least once a week.
Take a lesson from Elana – play 'I Spy' with your 'big eye' instead of your 'little eye' and expect to see wonderful sights and experiences unfold in front of you. Open that 'big eye' and watch 'the good times roll'.

Andrew Carnegie was a strong supporter of individuals who wanted to better themselves. He was one of the first to emphasize self-esteem and the potential that is in everyone for inner greatness. He was also famous for his ability to create millionaires from among his own employees.
One day a reporter during an interview asked, "How do you account for the fact you have forty-three millionaires working for you?"
Carnegie responded, "They weren't rich when they first came to work for me. We work with people the same way you mine gold. You have to remove a lot of dirt before you find a small amount of gold."
Andrew Carnegie enjoyed bringing change into people's lives. He liked helping them recognize their hidden treasures within, inspired them to develop their skills and talents and encouraged them, watching their lives transform day by day.
If you want to change the world, first change yourself. Andrew Carnegie believed in that principle and lived it, could we do more?

A number of inquiries have been made about my daily radio show here in the Northwest. The question has been asked if I will have audio streaming of my program via the Internet. At this time it is not available as the costs exceed my broadcasting budget at this time. We are planning on having that service available by the year.
