EARTHQUAKE ©

This has been a most interesting week. I have experienced three earthquakes within four days. While in California on a business trip during the earlier part of the week there was a quake in Monterey, then the next day in San Jose. The day after I got home, the third occurred right here in Tacoma, Washington. W Color hen I shared my experiences with a friend, she jokingly said, "Donna, you can't go to Alaska. With your magnetic personality it'll follow you up there and the Alaskans don't
need that experience!" We had a good chuckle over that thought.

Here in the Northwest we had the tremendous power of a 7.0 earthquake surge through our area. With each of the earthquakes I went through, prior to and including this one, there was total awareness of having absolutely no control over any of it. One just goes through it, dealing with the consequences when it is over.

After the quake stopped 'shaking' I checked every room of the house, finding that our office area was the worst. Standing in the doorway, my eyes saw nothing but complete chaos of papers, furniture and equipment , which filled the room. "Whew," I thought, "This is going to take some
time to clean up!"

However, after taking a few minutes to really think about it, I realized it wasn't going to take as long as I thought to put everything in order. I went into the garage, got some boxes and brought them
upstairs. With my husband's help, within an hour we had not only organized materials and papers into boxes, we had put furniture, books, computers and other items back into their right place. What had looked like a disastrous mess - with thoughtful planning, a touch of organization and teamwork - order was established.

We all have 'earthquakes' in our lives. They are not usually geological but they can be just a shocking and devastating. Almost every day I talk with someone, who is impacted with a loss of job, spouse, health problems, conflicts of one kind or another. Life has a way of presenting us with challenges, contradictions and opportunities. You may think I'm the eternal optimist. Perhaps, but I believe each event of upheaval has a gift within itself. If you look at life's experiences as an opportunity to make lemonade out of sour lemons, you come out richer and sweeter for it. No one escapes living and it's ups and downs. So how can we effectively take charge and create change
and/or control the results of a "shaky experience"?

Here are a few thoughts*Assess the situation. Don't be afraid of looking at damage. If you can't look at it directly, seeing what needs to be taken care of, you won't be able to take the next step.

*Think, evaluate. What needs to be done immediately? What needs to be thrown away, organized? How can you eliminate the confusion?

*Take action. Start moving, start doing. You may not have everything totally figured out as to what to do but you can figure some things out as you go along.

*Ask for help. Teamwork makes a difference. It allows for additional ideas to resolve problems, correct confusion and allow for things to get done more quickly and efficiently.

*Have a sense of humor. Richard Bach in 'Illusions' said it well, "There is no such thing as a problem without a gift for you in it's hand's."

In our case, one of the gifts was getting rid of a lot of 'trash' that needed to be dumped. Old files, mail, stuff that accumulates on one's desk but ends up being laid on the floor, put into files (forgotten forever), old phone directories, etc. Clean-up was amazingly easy. My husband saw the top of his desk he hadn't seen for 5 years. It felt good to finally take care of something that had needed action for a long time and it took an earthquake to make it happen.

Life demands attention. When the earthquakes hit, take cover and when they are over, get moving and doing. The results may surprise you. ~~~~~~~Donna Seebo

A Visit From The Wee Folk on St. Patrick's Day

Once, in far-off Ireland, Upon a sweet, pale dawn,
Through sleepy eyes I plainly saw a 'wee man' on our lawn;
I gazed upon I held my breath A tiny 'leprechaun!
Upon a greening leaf he swung, Beneath a hawthorn tree,
A feather in his bright red cap, As cocky as could be;
He danced and hummed a fairy song, All unaware of me.
I reached to touch him - he was gone Across the gorse, the heather;
His wee feet touching fern and flower With lightness of a feather.
In just a moment he was lost, This child of wind and weather!
Katherine Edelman

It's March 17th again, The wee folk's special day, and time to wish you
Irish luck, sending warm thoughts your way!

CHUCKLE FOR MARCH

(~.~) (This is a touch of 'Northwest Humor') (~.~)
"EARTHQUAKE STRIKES SEATTLE"
"THOUSANDS SPILLED"

Thousands were spilled and hundreds were injured as a giant tremor rocked the Seattle area Wednesday morning. Neither café lattes, cappuccinos, steamed chai, nor even the tiny espresso was spared from the force of the 6.8-magnitude quake. As Senior Investigative Baristas survey the damage, leaked reports suggest that as many as 10,000 hot drinks were spilled - many causing injury.

Survivors' statements: Sophie: "My latte was everywhere! I always order a Grande, but after the earthquake I was left with only a Tall."

Ronaldo: "I had just collected my double tall non-fat decaf Caramel Macchiato when the terror struck! Running for the door, I practically slipped on a hastily discarded L.L. Bean catalogue. What good fortune, for in it I found a lovely Transit Rolling Pullman and placed the order right there from my Palm VII."

Chad: "Like, you're not going to believe this. Only yesterday my soy Chai leaves were, like, totally predicting this quake. In fact, today I ordered a Grande in a Venti cup because I was so, like, worried about spillage."

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories about Real People
A person's outlook determines how he or she looks at something.
Some people find something positive in everything that happens, no
matter what. This story submitted by J.S., Virginia

Not too long ago I had "one of those days". I was feeling pressure from a writing deadline. I had company arriving in a couple days and the toilet was clogged. I went to the bank, and the trainee teller processing my deposit had to start over three times. I swung by the supermarket to pick up a few things and the lines were serpentine.

By the time I got home I was frazzled, sweaty and in a hurry to get something on the table for dinner. Deciding on Cream of Mushroom soup, I grabbed a can opener, cranked open the can, then remembered I had forgotten to buy milk at the store. Nix the soup idea. Setting the can aside, I went to plan B, which was leftover baked beans. I grabbed a plastic container from the fridge, popped the seal, took a look and
groaned. My husband isn't a picky eater, but even HE won't eat baked beans that look like 'caterpillars'. Really frustrated now, I decided on a menu that promised to be as foolproof as it is nutrition free - hot dogs and potato chips.

Retrieving a brand new bag of chips from the cupboard, I grabbed the cellophane and gave a hearty pull. The bag didn't open. I tried again. Nothing happened. I took a breath, doubled my muscle, and gave the bag a hearty wrestle. With a loud 'pop', the cellophane suddenly gave way, ripping wide from top to bottom. Chips flew sky high. I was left holding the bag and it was empty! It was the final straw. I let out a blood-curdling scream, "I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!"

My husband heard my unorthodox cry for 'help'. Within minutes he was standing at the doorway to the kitchen, where he surveyed the damage: an opened can of soup, melting groceries, moldy baked beans, and one quivering wife standing ankle deep in potato chips.

He then did the most helpful thing he could think of at that moment. He took a flying leap, landing flat-footed in the pile of chips. And then he began to stomp, dance and twirl, grinding those chips into my linoleum in the process! I stared. I fumed. Pretty soon I was working to stifle a smile. Eventually I had to laugh. Finally I decided to join him. I too, took a leap onto the chips, and then I danced.

Now I'll be the first to admit that my husband's response wasn't the one I was looking for. But the truth is, it was exactly what I needed. I didn't need a clean-up crew as much as I needed an attitude adjustment. The laughter from that funky moment provided just that.

SPECIAL COMMENTS

I want to thank those of you who sent me e-mails, also your calls concerning the earthquake and how it affected me and my family. It was so thoughtful and caring of you and we appreciated your earnest concern. For all of the intensity of the quake here in Tacoma we had very little damage. We were 'rocking and rolling' for a few minutes in our 'dancing house' but then it settled down. There are no cracked walls
and only a little breakage from small glass items that were 'jiggled' off of shelves in the kitchen and dining room. We were very fortunate.
