| The definition for 'appreciation' is - to hold in esteem, prize, value, hold in high regard. To appreciate is to exercise wise judgment, delicate perception and keen insight in realizing the truth worth of something. To esteem is to feel respect combined with a warm, friendly feeling. To value is to apply importance to a thing because of its worth (material or otherwise). To prize is to value highly and cherish.
This month so many of us will be spending time with friends and family, celebrating a special holiday that began so many years ago. Throughout history, during the fall of the year, celebration for the harvest was always significant. It is no less so today.
The Thanksgiving holiday gives us a 4 day weekend. Merchants prepare for the biggest buying holiday weekend for the season. However, I would like to invite you to take some of this holiday time to do something for yourself. What would that be? Take time to appreciate yourself and how very special you are. Also, spend some time to just sit back and appreciate
the many blessings you have.
There is another step I would like to recommend as well. Write. That's right....write. Pick up a pad of paper and pen, find yourself a cozy spot, get comfortable and start writing. I would like for you to create a page for 'Thanksgiving', writing down what you are grateful for. Give yourself some time to think about what you write down. Are there people that you encounter on a daily basis that enable you to have a job, provide you with food, transportation and various other things? Think about the infrastructure and people that provide all of the services/products that you use everyday and take for granted.
Then I want you to write a second page and this one is for yourself. Yes, for yourself. I want you to appreciate you and your talents. I know it can be difficult as we are taught we shouldn't focus on ourselves but this is a worthy exercise. For without you, something would be missing. Your smile, your jokes, your imagination, your efficiency, your dreams, your love and caring, even your problems! Each and every person has value and worth. Have you ever consider that without problems, challenges we wouldn't grow? Have you considered that
without others needing us we would have little purpose? Life's imperfections create opportunity. If you think you are a major imperfection, good. That gives you the exciting job of cutting out and polishing up those imperfections so you'll shine like a fine gem. There is a third page I would like you to write and it needs to come from your heart. This is a 'Thank You' to life, to the Universe, to God, to your family and friends - whoever or whatever you are comfortable with - to show appreciation for this experience called life. Now you may think this is rather trite, however it isn't. For when you write from your heart you are making a connection with your conscious mind and that creates major shifts in how you think and what you feel. Your 'brain mirror' will reflect what your mental image portrays.
Hermann Hesse once said, "Every man has only one vocation: to find the way to himself." This exercise can help you do that.
I wish you the very best this Thanksgiving season. Wherever you are, whatever your plans may be, know that you are very special and you do make a difference. You are appreciated, esteemed and valued.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
If you have ever doubted that one individual can make a difference then Mr.
Vogelbaugh's story will show an example of how it can be done.
It is Thanksgiving Eve and Bob Vogelbaugh, in Florence, Alabama is helping
one of his regular customers in his grocery store. He notices what she is
buying and inquires about why she hasn't any Thanksgiving fixings. She
tells him that with her family all grown up and involved in their own lives
Thanksgiving isn't something she gets involved with anymore since she is all
by herself. This conversation prompts Bob to make inquiries of other
customers that are coming into his store. Many of them are experiencing the
same situation. It causes him to think.
Now Bob's family is having a big family gathering. However, after the
conversations he has with many of his customers he calls his family and
cancels the dinner with them. Instead he sets up some folding chairs and a
long table stored in his backroom and calls those customers he knows will be
spending the holidays alone. He invites them to Thanksgiving dinner,
telling them to bring their favorite dish and he'll supply the turkey.
Everyone accepts and Thanksgiving dinner is a total success.
The story doesn't stop there. Bob Vogelbaugh's first Thanksgiving potluck
happened 34 years ago. Today a sumptuous holiday feast is served in a local
mall, free of charge to anyone who wants to come. Hundreds of volunteers
show up early in the morning to help with setting up the chairs, tables,
decorations and assist with the serving of food. Buses are donated to
provide transportation for those who need it. Over 2,000 pounds of turkey
is served and plenty of food is provided by those that attend. No one goes
away hungry. Donations come in from all over the area, even from out of
state. One of the local schools raised almost $2,000 to donate to this
annual Thanksgiving potluck.
Thousands of people show up for this event and it evolved because of one
mans concern for others. Bob still assists with the Thanksgiving potluck
and always gets a deep sense of satisfaction when he sees so many people
sharing the holiday together that might otherwise be by themselves.
A Special Thank You
I want to express my appreciation to those of you who came out to my
one day seminar on October 16th, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of 'The
Best'. It was a wonderful success and we will be repeating it in the spring
of 2004. We received calls from many of you who would have like to attend
but were unable to due to prior commitments. Notification will be posted
after the first of 2004 as to the date of the next presentation.
Also, it was so delightful to meet many of you at the Boeing
Parapsychology Expo. Thank you for your comments about my daily radio
programming and your support of my appearance there. We had a great time.
~~~~~~Turkey Quesadillas~~~~~~
This is a great recipe for leftovers.
1 pound turkey; 1 cup chopped red onion; 1-2 garlic cloves, minced; 2 cups
julienned zucchini; 1 cup salsa; 1 cup corn, 1 cup sweet red peppers; 1-4oz
can green chilies; 2 Tbls minced fresh cilantro; 1/2 tsp dried oregano; 1/2 tsp
ground cumin; 1/4 tsp salt; 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper; 8 flour tortillas (8
inches) and 2 cups (8 oz.) shredded spicy cheese.
Combine turkey, onion and garlic in skillet over medium heat. Drain
juices. Add zucchini, salsa, corn, red peppers and chilies. Reduce heat;
cover and simmer until vegetables are tender, then stir in seasoning.
For each quesadilla, place one tortilla in an ungreased nonstick
skillet. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup cheese. Top with 1/2 cup filling, then another
1/4 cup cheese. Cover with another tortilla. Cook over medium heat, turning
once, until light brown on both sides and cheese begins to melt. Cut into 8
wedges.
Serve with sour cream and additional salsa.
P.S. You can use other meats and low fat cheese if you desire. Use your
imagination and you can come up with all kinds of combinations. Also, for
those of you on Adkins, you can find low carb tortillas in your local
grocery store and Costco. |
