THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ April 2, 2004

A Moment with Donna ©" Making Music "

I love spring, don't you? Everywhere you look, nature is expressing herself dynamically and with great enthusiasm. Plants and trees are energetically producing new growth, producing delicate buds that are opining up their fragrance packets with blooms of brilliant color. Cherry blossom trees are packed thickly with their blossoms of pick and white, forming canopies of color that refresh the eye and spirit after a long gray winter. Birds chirp heartily in the early morning hours, creating a much more interesting wakeup call than a blaring clock alarm.

Earlier this week I was prepared to print out my newsletter, my editorial was ready but all of that changed yesterday when I experienced something quite special. Here in Tacoma we have a company that makes pipe organs. A friend, Greg, had invited me to come to the facility for a tour. Greg's wife, Pam, suggested that I do the tour as soon as possible as this pipe organ was going to be shipped to Notre Dame University in Indiana in a few weeks. So I called and set up a time to tour the facility.

The manufacturing plant, Paul Fruitts Organ Company, is situated within a quiet, attractive residential community. The building is quite large and handsomely designed with elegant simplicity. The entrance is through very tall double doors. Once inside – what filled my vision first was the sight of massive shiny silver organ pipes surrounded by framework of exquisitely carved wood. Then I looked up and all I could say was"Wow!"

Behind the first section I noticed was the rest of the organ. It is the most incredibly beautiful and the largest musical instrument I've ever seen. Over 30 feet high and over 20 feet wide, it totally fills the huge room it is assembled in. The masterful craftsmanship and artistry - breathtaking.

Greg took me on a tour, showing me all levels of this magnificent work of art that had taken over 16 months to create. Thousands and thousands of parts, including over 2500 individual metal organ pipes were created, piece by piece, with planning, precise measurement and patient, careful assembly. Every piece has its place, from the ebony and cow shinbone keyboard to the silvery pipes, which range from ink pen cartridge size to 16-foot high pipes of 8-inch diameter proportions. Each piece is handcrafted carefully, thoughtfully, always with the realization that precision, thoroughness and patience will create the final, expected masterpiece. There is no rush, no hurry.

As I walked through their manufacturing area it was obvious that the staff love what they do. Much of the work is tedious but they give each and every part of the production, whether it is a simple screw or a massive bellow that supplies air for the wonderful instrument their total attention. Step by step, one piece at a time, the work is done.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to see it assembled in all of its glory. By the end of May it will be in its new home, the University of Notre Dame. Once there the staff has to do all of the testing, tuning and adjustments of the instrument in its new home, which will take close to two months. Then, and only then, will this instrument make the beautiful music it is designed to create, lifting the hearts, minds and spirits of all who hear it.

Don't we go through the same process with our lives? Each phase from youth to old age has its parts and pieces of experience. If we are a prudent and wise craftsman, we take care, choosing carefully, selectively how we want to live, think and express ourselves. We make our own music. As we grow and gain experience, knowledge, our life and work become more refined, more creative. Each and every part of life's expression has value and is part of the greater picture that is often so very hard to see. How you work with opportunity and challenges builds your character, and personality.

Keep in mind, you are a 'masterpiece in progress'. What results, quality and substance so you want to demonstrate? Your life creates its own music. You are the 'master craftsman' and your love, sincerity, dedication, joy and creativity make a difference. As a composer, know you can design your personal melody of individuality and be a living, expressive part of life's symphony. This world will be richer because of who you are and what you give.

Make Music!

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
Easter Tradition

Easter is a wonderful time for loved ones and friends to get together. Here is a story about Susan M. Daubney of Grand Island, New York that I thought you would enjoy.

Susan has always enjoyed Easter. The entire family works together dying hard-boiled eggs, decorating them with everyone's name and various cutouts.

Easter day after a wonderful family dinner with aunts, uncles and cousins, the egg-tapping contest begins. The rules are easy for the young ones and everyone else. You gently tap your egg against the egg of the person next to you. You hold your breath, hoping yours doesn't crack. If it does, your partner moves on until the last one with an uncracked egg, shouts, "I win!"

The family has carried on this game for generations. Grandma Pauline tells the story about the egg cracking done when she was a little girl in Italy every Easter. There are always new additions in the family at Easter and no one minds hearing the story repeated.

Today her 85 year old great-grandmother still taps eggs with the children and they all feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful tradition that their family continues to enjoy. After all, the best thing about Easter is the opportunity to enjoy the love and warmth of family and friends
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

EASTER DAY
Easter Day is dawning All Heaven sings its praise.
On mountaintops, in valleys, The sun beams forth its rays.
The flowers are awaking, And birdsong fills the air;
All hearts are lifted upward,Rejoicing's everywhere.
