A Moment with Donna - "Meeting Challenges"©

There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't hear of a person standing up to incredible situations and overcoming them. Just this afternoon I was watching a program about the Navaho "Windwalkers" and the tremendous contribution they made with their language, developing a secret code for communication that saved thousands of lives and turned the tide of war. Approximately 3000 Navaho's helped make this happen.

What is it that makes individuals dig down inside and pull up incredible strengths and capabilities that get them through their 'moments of trial by fire'?

It has been said that 'Necessity is the Mother of Invention'. Why is it that we wait until our backs are up against a wall before we face our problems?

How can we as individuals handle challenges of death, disease, poverty and the thousand points of fear that are thrown at us every day from every angle imaginable?

Well, let's see if there is some insight that can help. I've found that there is never just one perfect answer to anything. Life is sort of like a major discount warehouse. You have more than one level of display, lots of variety with stock and it is always being shifted from one location to another within this experience we call life. You have to constantly be alert to change, open to opportunity and be willing to learn something new.

When life 'kicks' you in the seat of the pants what can you do? Swift kicks are never fun and they often are downright painful. I've yet to meet anyone who – when life gave them 'the boot' said, "Oh please, do that again! It felt soooo good!" No, for most people they'll moan and groan about the unfairness of life, the injustice of it all and wallow in their 'miseries'.

Problems are opportunities waiting to be solved. Sometimes that can take a while but frequently a few steps of planning, then action can bring resolution to frustrations, turning them into working opportunities, creating solutions that make a difference. Not unlike the parents of a young man, Lorenzo, who had an incurable disease caused by a nutritional deficiency. No cure available, it took years and lots of dedicated research, perseverance, love and a belief that there was an answer to their son's need. They discovered a specific combination of oils that stabilized the condition in this young man and have helped thousands of other children throughout the world to beat this disease's death verdict.

Qualities that will enable you to beat 'challenge blues' of life – 1) tenacity, 2) be willing to ask for help, 3) be open to learning new ideas/concepts 4) have faith, and 5) don't give up.

During this holiday season you may want to refer to this 'mental cocktail' to uplift your spirits should
'holiday blues' visit you.
Shaker - Confidence
1 Jigger of - Gratitude
2 Jiggers of – Love
3 Jiggers of – Expectance/Acceptance of the Best
Twist of persistence
Pinch of patience
Stir gently and pour into your mental glass of faith, sip slowly, let joy fill your heart and savor the flavor of the moment. Relax and enjoy your blessings.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Holiday Trivia

Among the Druids of pre-Christian Britain, mistletoe was a sacred medicinal herb, so esteemed for its curative properties that it was popularly know as all-heal. Sir James Frazer identified it as the golden bough plucked by Aeneas from the oak at the gate of the underworld, and the Druids seem to have been just as fascinated by its magic as the Romans were. A Druid priest who removed a sprig from its host plant, the oak, had to do so with a golden sickle and catch it in a white cloth before it hit the ground.

Frazer associates the kissing custom with the "license of the Greek Saturnalia," and T.G. Crippen, sees it as a "peculiarly English" custom. It may reflect a primitive marriage or fertility rite. Or it may go back to a Scandinavian truce custom. If people were prohibited from fighting when they met near mistletoe in the forest, it may have been but a short step to the custom of hanging a sprig on a doorway "to imply a pledge of peace and friendship" that would be sealed with a greeting like a 'kiss'.

(~.~) DECEMBER'S CHUCKLE (~.~)

While trying to explain to their 5 year old daughter how much technology had changed, her daddy pointed to their brand-new computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.

Listening thoughtfully to her daddy's explanation, her eyes became bigger and bigger. Finally she asked, "How big was the mouse?

GOLDEN NUGGETS ~ True stories about real people

The following is a copy of an editorial page of the former New York Sun, written by the late Mr. Frank P. Church:

"We take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of the The Sun:"
Dear Editor: I am 8 years old.
Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says "If you see it in The Sun it's so."
Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

---"Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as
measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no
enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you
ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that'' no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing
else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood."
