It is truly amazing how we can transform our environment into a place of magical wonder
with just a little imagination, color and design. As I am writing this editorial I'm sitting in my
living room, enjoying our decorations for the holiday season. Our Christmas tree is filled
with whimsical ornaments and colorful lights. When all of the main lights are turned off,
those on the tree illuminate the whole room with a colorful, soft glow, creating harmony you
can absorb letting the stresses of the moment fly away.
The Christmas season seems to be the very special time of the year when just about
everyone looks to creating a unique magic of goodwill, joy, appreciation, anticipation of the
highest and best. It is truly a wonderful season and we should take the time to savor, enjoy
the beauty of it all. Just about everywhere you go, music is playing creating a mood of
joyfulness. People smile more frequently and seem to be more thoughtful in their actions.
Now, if we are really honest about what happens to create this wonderful stage for the
holiday, it takes planning, organization and action to bring it all to life. Another wordsit
takes effort and work. There just aren't enough elves to do it all. Someone has to take the
initiative to make it happen.
The year 2003 will be coming to a close soon and new opportunities are waiting to be
discovered, explored. 2004 will hold both challenges and blessings. How can we create
the transformations that we would like in our lives?
I thought I would share a quote with you by Dr. Osler that speaks volumes.
"Though a little one, the master word looms large in meaning. It is the "Open
Sesame" to every portal, the great equalizer in the world, the true philosopher's stone
which transmutes all the base metal of humanity into gold. The stupid man among you
it will make bright, the bright man brilliant, and the brilliant student steady. With the
magic word in your heart, all things are possible, and without it all study is vanity and
vexation. The miracles of life are with it; the blind see by touch, the deaf hear with
eyes, the dumb speak with fingers. To the young it brings hope, to the middle-aged
confidence, to the aged repose. The true balm for hurt minds, in its presence the heart
of the sorrowful is lightened and consoled. Not only has it been the touchstone of
progress, but it is the measure of success in everyday lifeThe master word is
work." Sir William Osler, physician.
What is work? It is exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something;
productive or operative activity. What is the result? Accomplishment, effective results,
production and achievement. It involves personal responsibility that only you can
demonstrate, regardless of circumstances.
I'm not any different from anyone else. It would be delightful to have a fairy godmother
that would just wave her magic wand that would change problems into delightful
experiences with no effort. However, regardless of how many requests I put into the
Universal Customer Service Department there hasn't been one assigned to my office.
Hm,m,m,m I wonder if I have been filling out the correct forms?
Seriously, to create change as we would like to see it we must plan, organize and follow
through with action. So this month, at some point, give yourself a gift, the gift of reflection.
Take time to just sit and think, maybe have a plateful of holiday goodies and a cup of latte to
keep you company. Get out your good friends, the writing pad and pen and ask yourself
some questions like: What are my priorities? What most would l like to change physically,
spiritually, emotionally, mentally? If I could accomplish a dream or dreams what would I
like to do? Don't force your thinking, just let your thoughts flow through you. You might be
surprised at what really comes into your mind.
Then, ask yourself what steps you can take to bring you closer to your objectives or
desire. Break down into small steps what you can do to focus on reaching the results.
After you make your notes, put them away for a few days and then review them. You may
decide that you want to make some changes because you have changed your mind and
that's a good thing to do. Then get about the business of doing what needs to be done,
step by step. Be patient and before you know it, your desire will be realized perhaps in a
way far exceeding your expectation.
This holiday season is a very special gift and I am grateful to share this moment with you
through this newsletter and through my radio show, my guests and callers and clients. May
you, your friends and family have the happiest of seasons, enjoying love, health, wealth, joy
and taking the time to appreciate it all. Blessings to you all.

True Stories About Real People
"The first true miracle Christmas story I heard was the one my grandmother published in
her Vancouver newspaper, the Elder Statesman. It was told to her by one of her good
friends. His miracle happened during the war when he was a prisoner. One of his fellow
prisoners was lucky enough to work in the kitchen, and from time to time he would sneak
food back to the barracks for them under penalty of death. On Christmas Ever this brave
prisoner concealed a sack of rice and carried it from the kitchen to the barracks. When he
was back amongst his mates, he thought they would be enthusiastic, but instead what he
saw were ashen faces and gaping mouths. Unbeknownst to him, as he had left the
kitchen the sack of rice had caught on a nail, and had laid a perfect trail of rice to their
cabin. From Christmas Eve to Christmas morning was a long night as they waited for the
morning's punishment. But Christmas morning was greeted by one of the men looking out
the window and shouting in great enthusiasm.
It had snowed during the night, and the rice had been covered by freshly fallen snow!
When the prisoners were allowed out into the snow by their guards, they played soccer to
kick, mix, and bury the rice in the resulting mud, thus saving their lives."
