"The lives of all men and women are made up of two influences: one is relationship of a person to himself - his appetites, desires, fears, talents; the other is the way he relates these feelings to the world outside himself, which in turn has its effect on him".
Peter Carter, Historica, Reseacher/Author-1946
Happy New Year 2003!
New Years is always a celebration of new beginnings, opportunities. Many of us will write down resolutions of what we want to change, add or delete from our current situations. That is fine, well and good. I had to chuckle when I read recently that after we make our resolutions we should have them notarized to be sure we achieve them. Hm-m-m, that's an interesting thought!
On a television interview New Years Eve a young woman was interviewed and asked what she thought were the top two resolutions for 2003. Her response, "Smoking and weight loss". As it turned out, from their interviewing lots of people, she was right.
A resolution is a formal expression of intention. That's good. What if we took a different mental positioning on how to work with our resolutions? How about some questions - Where would you like to see yourself, financially, professionally, in relationships, travel, education or whatever else you can think of?
Research has indicated that the environment we put ourselves into - mentally and physically - affects our attitudes, behaviors and accomplishments. Where and how can you change your environment so it changes your attitude/vision about yourself, your life?
In 1975 Junko Tabei, from Japan, was the first female to climb to the top of Mt. Everest. After climbing Vinson Massif in Antarctica, she became the first woman to climb the highest mountains on six of the seven continents. When interviewed about her achievements she said," When I die, I want to look back and know that my life was interesting. I want to leave behind a personal history."
What a resolution! She wanted 'to know that her life was interesting'. That attitude, in and of itself, provided purpose, curiosity and a drive to be the unique individual she wanted to be.
We should do no less for ourselves. To quit smoking, lose weight - well, if they are parts of our life we should deal with, they are good resolutions to put down on our New Year's list. Perhaps it would be a better to look at the bigger picture of what we would really like to achieve as individuals, to open our minds, to spread our wings of imagination and enthusiasm to reach for our highest dreams and desires. Then you could automatically fold in these other resolutions as part of the process for achieving your innermost desires.
Have you already made your list of resolutions for the New Year? If not, why not take a quiet moment or two, find a quiet place - sit down with a pad of paper and pen, and think about where you are and where you would like to see yourself within a year, 5 or 10 years. Write it all down on your pad of paper. Put is aside for a few days, then go back and review it. Be honest with yourself, don't be influenced by other peoples opinions. When you are satisfied with your 'resolutions' put them into an envelope and tuck it away for safekeeping until next year.
You might find upon your review in 2004 that what you desired was not only achieved but your opened yourself up to new possibilities and new directions.
Just like Ms. Junko Tabei, we can set our own visions and be about living our goals, dreams, aspirations in wonderful ways. What choices will you make this New Year 2003? Whatever they are, I wish for you and all that you love, nothing but the finest and the best. May 2003 bring you the opportunities, changes and fulfillment of your hearts desire. ~~~ DONNA SEEBO

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
It is said that "genius" is common sense dressed in its working clothes. This story
demonstrates that wisdom well.
After his parents were brutally murdered in North Vietnam, Ri moved to South Vietnam. While there, Ri went to school and eventually became a building contractor. He prospered greatly until he was arrested while on a trip north. After being imprisoned in North Vietnam for three years, he finally escaped and made his way south, only to be charged as a spy for the north!
When he learned that the U.S. was pulling out of South Vietnam, he gave all his worldly possessions in exchange for passage on a small overcrowded fishing boat. He was later picked up on the high seas by an American ship and taken to the Philippines. Once there, he lived in a refugee camp for two years, until he was allowed to come to the United States.
Once he arrived in the U.S., Ri's cousin offered both him and his wife jobs in his tailor shop. Even though their net pay was only $300 a week, they were determined to succeed. For two years, they lived in the back room of the tailor shop and took sponge baths so they could save every penny possible.
Within two years, they had saved $30,000 and bought out the cousins business. It was only then that they rented an apartment.
Today, Ri is a millionaire. Hard work, faith, discipline and planning can bring a dream into reality! Life is all about moving forward, regardless of what has been in the past.
