THE DONNA SEEBO NEWSLETTER ~ January, 2004

A Moment with Donna ©" Cleaning Out Stuff "

Well I did it.finally!
For almost a year I have been squirreling 'stuff' away in boxes. You know how it goes. You start
with a nice sized cardboard box and just put 'stuff' in to get it out of the way. That's mistake number one. Mistake number two is moving the box into a room where it is out of sight and out of mind. Mistake number three is when 'the box' is getting full I bring in another box of compatible 'stuff'. Couldn't have 'the box' without company. And of course you see this one coming companion box number three creates the trinity of 'stuff' that now fills my once uncluttered room. Each time I open the door to 'the room' an unfeeling trinity greets my entry. I'd think"Must get this cleaned up!" then proceed to step over, scoot around boxes to get to what I need, then close the door behind me.

This has been the 'get rid of the stuff' week. Flexing my mighty muscles I determined I was going to move my friendly boxes out of the room and guess what? I found they were so heavy I couldn't lift them so I had to push them out into the open where they couldn't be hidden anymore.

Finger grazing through all of the papers and items that have piled up through the past months, I filled large plastic bags, one for trash, one for Goodwill and a stack for 'keep and file'. Though this is not totally mindless activity it does give quiet moments for thought.

Here it is the New Year of 2004. Resolution time. Traditionally we spend lots of time thinking
about what we want to do with our New Year of opportunity. I thought that it might be better if instead of doing a resolution list, why not look at what needs to be done now to clear out 'the stuff' we keep hanging onto so we can have space for what we really do want.

What 'clutter' or 'loose ends' are in our lives? Any resentments, fears, confusion, old hurts,
inappropriate habits or confusion? A lot like dirty dishes piled up on a kitchen counter, they won't clean themselves. We have to scrub them and then put them away. Should we discover anything chipped or damaged, we throw it in the trash, making room for something else. Good practical action for clean up on any level.

Funny thing about clutter, it is totally mindless and happy to stay wherever you put it, whether it is in thinking, your home or business. How can you deal with it? Work one step, one piece at a time. If it is physical clutter, get out large trash bags and designate their titles 'trash', 'charity', "garage sale', etc. Call a friend and have a 'Clutter Party'. What a good excuse to have fun and get 'the stuff' cleared out!

How about mental & emotion clutter? It can take up a lot of space in our lives too, causing us to experience unnecessary grief, emptiness, and feelings of helplessness. Poor mental habits create chaos and disarray in thinking. Too often we close the door to painful memories but just like physical clutter it stays right where you put it until you make the choice to recognize its clutter, face it and then dump it. If you can't face it alone, again call a friend or join a support group that will help.

This New Year of 2004 why not resolve to take care of being in charge of your life, your space,
your priorities that are in front of you now? Cleaning out and straightening up what is needed today will make room and order for the next phase of what you most desire. Possibilities then become realities, the realities you really want filling your space, heart, mind and spirit.

May this year -2004-bring you joy, personal power, love, prosperity and the fulfillment of your
heart's dreams. Happy New Year everyone! It will be dynamic and power packed. Enjoy the journey.

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People

If you have ever wondered if one person can make a difference, here's a story that will inspire you. Kelly Davis in West Bath, Maine, who is just 11 years old, became aware that police dogs can get hurt while on duty with their human partners. She was made aware that they could benefit from wearing bulletproof vests and proceeded to work towards making that a reality for the police dogs in her community.

Her parents were very supportive of her idea and encouraged her bake sales and bottle drives to raise the money. Kelly raised over $12,000, enough to buy vests for 18 police dogs.
What happened next though, was not expected. State Attorney General Steven Rowe went to visit her and advised that what she was doing was against the law in Maine. The law stated that individuals can't solicit public funds to benefit law enforcement. However, he suggested that she could try to change the law and that's what she did. With support again from her parents their state senator proposed a new bill to the state Senate, Kelly appeared, speaking well for her cause and the need to change the law. A new bill was passed allowing individuals to raise money for law enforcement.

To date, Kelly has raised over $26,000 for vests to protect police dogs. What an accomplishment!
