From earliest childhood music has touched my life. It has been a catalyst for traveling mind's
road of imagination and creativity. Music can stimulate, aggravate, irritate, motivate, and create all
kinds of emotions within us. I have always been in awe of people who can – through musical notes
– choreograph complete stories, scenes that you feel in your heart. When combined with words,
music can have tremendous impact on one's life.

Just this morning I was reading an article about "Izzy", a very gifted musician/composer who
affected the lives of millions with his powerful music. What I didn't know was that he wrote the
powerful song, "God Bless America" at the beginning of WW I. He had written it for a special
production called "Yip! Yip! Yaphank!" but decided at the last minute that it wouldn't do and filed it
away for 20 years. Then when WWII started to show it's ugly face he retrieved it, presenting it to Kate Smith. She decided to sing it on her radio program, Armistice Day in 1938, and the rest is history. Kate Smith would always end her programming with this wonderful song.

Do you have any idea who 'Izzy' is? His life began in 1988, in Russia. Due to the political fever of anti-Semitism, his family's home was destroyed by fire and they fled for their lives to the United
States, settling in New York City. Times were hard for the Beilins family but Izzy loved music, loved to sing and was a cantor (like his father) in a local synagogue.

With no musical training of any kind he made up songs and lyrics. A friend would listen when he
hummed the music and would match the correct notes. Izzy couldn't read written musical notes but
that didn't stop him from doing what he loved most, creating melodies with words that lifted people's hearts and spirits.

His creations – "Alexander's Ragtime Band", and many, many more were to become a significant
part of American history. But "God Bless America" meant the most to him. In 1940 he set up a fund for the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, where all of the moneys made from the sale of the song would go to these two organizations. To date, over 7 million dollars have been generated from the sale of this wonderful piece of music that epitomized his feeling about our beautiful country.

I'm sure that you have guessed the real name of this wonderful master of music – Irving Berlin.
Irving felt that "God Bless America" was the most significant piece of music he ever wrote. It
represented the heartfelt appreciation he had for our great nation and the opportunities that he and
his family were able to experience by living here in the United States. Irving passed away in 1989 at the age of 101, leaving a legacy that will forever be a part of the American Spirit.

On this upcoming 4th of July, while you are grilling hot dogs and hamburgers, visiting with friends
and enjoying the fireworks of celebration of this day in history-take a moment and reflect on the lyrics of "God Bless America". Perhaps your mind and heart will connect with the spirit of the man who loved this country with a passion of appreciation for its gifts of choice and opportunity. Sing along with Irving the blessing of our 'Home Sweet Home', feeling his heartfelt vision for the future.

A FATHER'S WISDOM

There was once a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told
him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.
The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to
control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it
was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the
father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my
son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in
anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't
matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there."

GOLDEN NUGGETS ~ True stories about real people

We all, at one time or another, have had someone who affected our life in a very special loving way. It can be a friend, a member of family, or even a stranger. Here is an example of how loving inspirational words made a difference in one very famous person's life.

She was just getting ready to go on stage. South Pacific was the production and Mary Martin was thinking about her role when a note was handed to her. Opening it she read these words: "Dear Mary, A bell's not a bell till you ring it. A song's not a song till you sing it. Love in your heart is not put there to stay. Love isn't love till you give it away." Oscar Hammerstein.

Mr. Hammerstein wrote this note as he lay dying. The impact on Mary Martin was a powerful one. After the show a number of people told her that her performance was incredible! "Mary, what happened to you out there tonight? You sang with more power than you've ever sung!"

With tears in her eyes, Mary Martin shared with all of them the note that Oscar Hammerstein had sent her, stating "Tonight I gave my love away!" **** ****
