All of us have moments when we would just love to be let alone to wallow in our 'pity pots' of misery. Our kids are driving us nuts, bills are piling up on the kitchen counter, the house is a mess and the job...well, you know how stressful that gets. Traffic gridlock is the norm
anymore and we grumble and grip about how today, everything is just 'going to the dogs'.
Attitude is powerful stuff. Recently, while on a business trip, I had the occasion to experience a special lesson of my own.
Traveling today involves long waits in line at airports, security checks and can be rather tiring, especially if you are taking red eye flights. There is waiting for luggage, then waiting for shuttles to come, pick you up and transport you to your hotel. Timing is everything and when
you have meetings, particular time schedules, you don't want to be late. Such was my situation. However, I was soon to be in conditions totally out of my control that would prove to be challenging and interesting.
In a major airport while waiting for my luggage I had called the shuttle service to tell them I was ready for pick up. "We'll be there in 15 minutes", was their response. 45 minutes later I was still waiting.
Finally the shuttle driver came into the terminal, called my name and after finding out I was his passenger, started walking out to the van with as much speed he could muster. He didn't offer to assist. I followed quickly maneuvering around vehicles that were packed in the departure area, thinking to myself, "Who trained this guy? He has an attitude, a rather brusque one at that!"
The front seat was available so I chose to sit there. Fortunately there was a seat belt and it was a good thing, for this was the shuttle driver from hell. Speed was the rule of power and he exercised it every moment possible. All rules for courteous driving were non-existent. In this shuttle he was king and by golly, watch out because he wasn't going to give an inch.
I realized I had a choice. Additional stress I didn't need, I had insurance and if I died from this experience so what. I was just going to watch, observe and see what happens. I decided this was going to be an adventure and that is what it turned out to be.
Traffic was thicker than honeybees in a beehive. He took the van into areas at the airport I didn't think it was possible for him to access. He blew the horn, getting people's attention. Stopping, starting, over and over again, he picked up passengers at various terminals. The cell phone seemed to be glued to his ear. Conversations with his dispatcher, friends, etc. were going on just about every minute. Meanwhile he is driving, weaving in and out of incredible congestion. At one point he was talking to someone saying he was going home early because he hadn't been paid by his boss. Once out of the airport's labyrinth, it was freeway time, same process.
Two hours later I was dropped off at the front door of my hotel with a whole new respect for the brusque young van driver. As a front seat observer, I realized that he had incredible skills and was dealing with an environment that really was a hostile one. He had a time schedule and really wanted to do the best job possible. He was totally focused on getting it done effectively and safely. This city is one of the most congested in the world and he was dealing with all of its craziness much better than I ever could.
My attitude changed dramatically when I let go of preconceived evaluations and paid attention to what was really happening. Totally wide awake and invigorated from my experience, I complimented him on his adeptness at handling the very stressful job he had. To my surprise, he smiled and paused to give me a little extra assistance with my bags. Happily I tipped him for a job well done. This adventure reminded me that we need to - before making a judgment - walk a mile in the other persons shoes to truly understand who they are and why they act the way they do. I hadn't walked but wow....what a ride!

GOLDEN NUGGETS
True Stories About Real People
Albert Einstein was known to be a rather independent individual and thoroughly enjoyed ignoring tradition and custom whenever he felt it appropriate to do so. One particular evening he gave a thoughtful demonstration of this while he was attending a dinner held in his honor by Swarthmore College. Einstein had not been asked to speak. He was there to receive an award.
Once the award was given to him the audience applauded loudly, crying "Speech, speech!" The president feeling a little overwhelmed, motioned for Einstein to come to the podium and asked him to respond. Einstein reluctantly came forward and said only a few words,
"Ladies and gentlemen, I am very sorry but I have nothing to say." Then he quietly went back to his seat and sat down.
Six months later the president of Swarthmore College was sent a wire by Einstein. It said, "Now I have something to say."
So it was another dinner was held and Einstein happily gave his speech.
