DONNA SEEBO'S NEWSLETTER June, 2000
HAVE DESSERT FIRST ! !©
These past couple of weeks have been very intense with work. 14 to 16 hour days speed by all too quickly and I felt like I was running on a hamster's exercise wheel with no way to get off. Ever had times like that?

Well, one day last week I had a meeting with some people at a nice hotel. It turned out that they were not available for over an hour so I decided to go into the hotel restaurant to have something to eat. I was very hungry and hadn't had the opportunity to have lunch.

Walking into the dining room area I knew I had made the right choice. It was beautifully decorated and quiet. Hardly anyone was in the restaurant as it was late in the afternoon. A lovely waitress, with a very bright smile, took me to my table. As I sat down in the plush
leather seat, I thought to myself, " I am going to enjoy every moment of this delightful environment."

My whole body relaxed. The stress of the day seemed to disappear in the easy-going luxury of the restaurant. The waitress brought me a menu. I looked at it and then did something very unusual. At least for me. I put the menu down and asked my waitress, Angel, "What scandalous deserts do you have today?"

She grinned, saying, "Give me just a minute and I'll bring you some goodies that you'll just love." She did just that. Angel brought out a huge tray that was covered with beautifully decorated, delicious, delectable deserts. Everything from a rich, golden egg custard to a
decadent chocolate coconut cake. What a feast for the eyes! I made my choice.

When my deep-dish marionberry pie arrived, my hungry self said, "Yes, this is going to be good!" The pie had been warmed. A nice, plump scoop of vanilla ice cream had been placed on top and was slowly melting into the pie's juices. I can tell you it tasted as good as it looked. I relished every bite and I didn't give two cents of concern to the calories.

Angel stopped to chat for a few minutes since it wasn't real busy. She asked if I was enjoying my dessert. I said that I was. I told her that for some reason I hadn't wanted to be practical and have a salad. I really wanted desert first and foremost.

Angel then told me about a friend of hers that was disabled and how the two of them would do just what I had done and would order dessert when they went out. She said that her friend had gone through a lot of difficulties and often remarked how seldom people enjoyed having dessert first.

"Sometimes you just have to be spontaneous and enjoy something different and unusual. Being practical and logical is good but having dessert first can be a lot of fun and won't make a bit of difference to anyone but you. Life is too short to be too practical all the time." I thought to myself, "Angel is one, wise person."

Wisdom comes in the most interesting settings. How often do you enjoy the 'desserts' of life? I'm not just talking about chocolate cake but doing things for yourself that you think are just not appropriate, in the typical, practical way.

How about taking time during the day to read a wonderful book, to just take a walk and feast your eyes on the wonderful beauty of nature that is around you or better yet, spending time with friends, family, those that you love.

The 'desserts' of life are many and you can select from the tray those you wish to sample and enjoy. There is nothing written in the "Cookbook of Life" that says that you cannot choose to be spontaneous, joyous, curious, and open to new opportunities. But you have to make
the choice.

Enjoy the moment. For this is the best day of your life and you can make it what you want it to be.

Bon Appetit!........Donna Seebo

QUOTE FOR THE MONTH
"The world is wide, and I will not waste my life in friction when it
could be turned into momentum." Francis Willard

WHAT FATHER'S ARE MADE OF

A father is a thing that is forced to endure childbirth without an anesthetic. A father never feels entirely worthy of the worship in a child's eyes. He's never quite the hero his daughter thinks he is, never quite the man his son believes him to be-and this worries him, sometimes.

So he works too hard to try to smooth the rough places in the road for those of his own who will follow him.

A father is a thing that gets very angry when school grades aren't as good as he thinks they should be. He scolds his son though he knows it's the teacher's fault. Fathers give daughters away to other men who aren't nearly good enough so they can have grandchildren who are smarter than anybody's.

Fathers make bets with insurance companies about who will live the longest. Though they know the odds, they keep right on betting. And one day they lose.

I don't know where a father goes when he dies. But I've an idea that after a good rest, wherever it is, he won't be happy unless there's work to do. He won't just sit on a cloud and wait for the girl he's loved and the children she bore. He'll be busy there, too, repairing
the stairs, oiling the gates, improving the streets, smoothing the way.

Paul Harvey

A CHILD'S PERSPECTIVE

On Vacation my nine-year-old son, Ryan, and I were at the pool, where two attractive women wearing thong bikinis were sunning themselves. I noticed that Ryan kept staring at them, but he would occasionally glance back at me. When they got up to leave, Ryan watched them particularly closely.

I was bracing myself for questions he might have when he turned to me and whispered, "Dad, can I take that candy bar those girls left behind?"
