DONNA SEEBO'S NEWSLETTER MARCH 6, 2000

"LESSONS LEARNED" ©

Each of us has individuals who have affected our lives in very special ways. While visiting with a friend, a
particular image popped into the front of my mind's mirror. Crisp and clear, it opened memories about the
people who have influenced me throughout my life.
One of the most significant was my Granddad. He was a giant of a man. As a little girl I remember how
much I admired him. His strong presence, created not just by his height of 6' 4" but also by the deep, rough
edged voice, oversized nose and twinkling eyes, represented in my young, 7 year old mind, strength, love,
caring and security. When he hugged me I felt safe and protected.
Granddad had a special look that would come into his eyes, when I was being mischievous, that could stop
me in my tracks. One of his most impressive physical aspects was his hands. Goodness, they were so large
that when he held my small, girlish hand in his well, my hand just disappeared.
I recall one special day. It was early morning and time for breakfast. Granddad and I were sitting at the table
and Grandma was cooking. The smells of fresh coffee brewing, hot biscuits baking and bacon sizzling while
she scrambled the eggs was wonderful.
Unlike today, we didn't have coffee mugs. Cups and saucers were in place for the hot beverage. Once coffee was poured into Granddad's cup, I was amazed at what transpired next. Granddad proceeded to tip his filled
coffee cup, pouring the hot coffee into his saucer. I didn't say a word but I can tell you my brown eyes were
big and popping in unbelief. According to the rules of our house this was inexcusable behavior. One didn't
do that sort of thing at the table. Wow! I just watched as to what would happen next.
Granddad then lifted the saucer of coffee up to his mouth, after he had just stuffed it full of scrambled eggs
and bacon, slurping the brown liquid out of it. WellI never!
I couldn't stand it. Grandmother wasn't concerned. In fact, she and Granddad were talking as if nothing was
unusual about his manners. "Whew, I could never get away with that!" I thought to myself. Squirming in
my chair, a question grew inside of me that I felt if I didn't ask it I would just burst. Finally I mustered the
courage. "Granddad," I ask, "why do you drink your coffee out of the saucer? Mom, won't let me do that?"
Grandma laughed heartily turning to him saying, "Foster, you tell this child why you have such bad
manners." They both were smiling.
"Donna," he said, "Your mother is right. You shouldn't drink coffee out of the saucer like I do. Do you want
to know why I do it? His piercing eyes held mine totally captive.
     "Yes sir!" I replied.
"I work for the railroad. I am up early every morning. Your Grandma fixes me a thermos of hot coffee to
take to the railroad yard. At break time, we have about 10 minutes. I have my hot coffee and a snack. The
coffee is too hot to drink so I pour it into a saucer so it will cool. Often, while I am eating, men will be
asking me questions so I've had to learn to eat, talk and drink coffee in a short period of time. So, you see
Donna, I do this because it is a habit. Now, when we go out to dinner I don't do it. I know better and don't
want to embarrass myself or anyone else. Don't copy me. Just understand why I do it."
You may ask yourself why I share this story with you. At that young age I learned it pays to watch, look and
listen and ask questions. This by the way was not encouraged in our home. What did Granddad teach me?
1.Things are not always what we judge them to be. His working environment was a hard one. To enjoy
his coffee on a short break he had to do whatever was necessary. He adapted to his environment.
2.He knew what he was doing.
3.Just because he had a bad habit didn't mean I was to do the same thing.
4.Habits are something we choose and can change.
5.People have reasons for their behavior. What may seem strange or different may have good cause
behind it.
6.Ask questions. You may be quite surprised at the answer. It may make perfect sense, giving you a
whole new perspective.
In my young mind I could see Granddad in the railroad yard, slurping hot coffee from a saucer, mouth
stuffed with a sweet doughnut and talking a mile a minute to his workers all at the same time. It made sense
and I was perfectly comfortable with his "saucer slurping" after that. Instead of critical judgment, there was
understanding and acceptance of what he told me.
Richard Bach in "Illusions" says, "We are all learners, doers and teachers."
We create our character by what we choose to accept as our reality, what we want to be and how we want to
live. My grandfather taught me a great deal and I am grateful. Thank you, Granddad.
Memories are special 'treasures'. Enjoy yours.

TEN GUIDELINES FOR ENLIGHTENMENT
1.Be a Fundamentalist-make sure the 'Fun' always comes before the 'Mental'. Realize that life is a
situation comedy that will never be canceled. A laugh track has been provided, and the reason why we are put
in the material world is to get more material. Have a good laugh twice a day and that will ensure
regular hilarity.
2.Remember that each of us has been given a special gift just for entering-so you are already a winner!
3.The most powerful tool on the planet today is Tell-A-Vision. That is where I tell a vision to you, and you
tell a vision to me. That way, if we don't like the programming we're getting, we can simply change the
channel.
4.Life is like photography. You use the negative to develop.
5.It is true. As we go through life thinking heavy thoughts, thought particles tend to get caught between the
ears, causing a condition called truth decay. So be sure to use mental floss twice a day. And when you're
tempted to practice tantrum yoga, remember what we teach in Absurdiveness Training Class: "Don't get
even, get odd."
6.If we want world peace, we must let go of our attachments and truly live like nomads. That's where I no
mad at you, you no mad at me. That way, there'll surely be nomadness on the planet. Peace begins with
each of us. A little peace here, a little peace there, pretty soon all the peaces will fit together to make one big
peace everywhere.
7.Great earth changes have been predicted for the future, so if you're looking to avoid earthquakes, my
advice is simple. When you find a fault, just don't dwell on it.
8.There's no need to change the world. All we have to do is toilet train the world, and we'll never have to
change it again.
9.If you're looking to find the key to the Universe, I have some bad news and some good news. The bad
news is: there is no key to the Universe. The good news is: it has been left unlocked.
10.Finally, everything I have told you is channeled. That way, if you don't like it, it's not my fault.
Remember, enlightenment is not a bureaucracy. We don't have to go through channels.

" $$$$$$$ HARMONICS $$$$$$"
An American tourist in Tel Aviv was about to enter the impressive Mann Auditorium to take in a concert by
the Israel Philharmonic. He was admiring the unique architecture, the sweeping lines of the entrance, and the
modern décor throughout the building. Finally he turned to his escort and asked if the building was named
for Thomas Mann, the world-famous author.
"No," his friend said, "it's named for Fredric Man, from Philadelphia."
"Really? I never heard of him. What did he write?'
"A check."
"GOLDEN NUGGETS"
Real Stories..Real People
Tom Dooley was a world famous doctor. At a very young age he gave up a prosperous career to work with
hospitals and dedicate his life to the afflicted people of Asia. When he lay dying, age 34, he wrote this very
special letter to the president of his alma mater, Notre Dame:

"Dear Father Hesburgh: They've got me down. Flat on the back, with plaster, sand bags, and hot water
bottles. I've contrived a way of pumping the bed up a bit so that, with a long reach, I can get to my
typewriter..Two things prompt this note to you. The first is that whenever my cancer acts up a bit.I turn
inward. Less do I think of my hospital around the world, or of 94 doctors, fund-raisers, and the like. More
do I think of one Divine Doctor and my personal fund of grace.I have monstrous phantoms; all men do.
And inside and outside the wind blows. But when the time comes, like now, then the storm around me does
not matter. The winds within me do not matter. Nothing human or earthly can touch me. A peace gathers in
my heart. What seems unpossessable, I can possess. What seems unfathomable, I can fathom. What is
unutterable, I can utter. Because I can pray. I can communicate. How do people endure anything on earth if
they cannot have God?"
