When you are a radio talk show host interviewing over 200 people a year, you get to hear a lot of stories. These real life experiences can sometimes shake your personal foundations of belief and faith deeply. The influence can be positive or negative depending on your response. We all have mental cages of insecurities, assumptions, and understandings that we place ourselves within. Comfort is the key and our 'logic' of personal survival we work hard to protect, sometimes taking a position of defiance, daring anyone to open the door to our cage of self built insulation.
Life is tough. Mother Nature is a stern, unfeeling taskmaster. There isn't a day that goes by she doesn't challenge us to find her secrets, to harness her power. Just when we think we know it all, she 'pops' a twist into our equations of assumptions, forcing us to rethink
and ask new questions of how, when, where or why.
Recently two individuals, Jim McDermott and RoseMarie Rossetti, were guests on my program. Their personal experiences are incredible. Each day they demonstrate how when life hands you a tragedy you can create a masterpiece to inspire and motivate others. The roll of life's dice wasn't a lucky 7 for them, yet they live each day to its fullest, appreciating everything and everyone around them.
Jim McDermott, 41 years old, sat across from me in studio sharing pictures in a photo album of his battle with a vicious bacteria that developed in his body after some dental work done when he was 29 years old. This infection was eating him alive; turning the extremities of his
body black; eventually resulting in amputation of fingers, lower sections of his legs, and removal of parts of his face and ears.
Rose Marie was bike riding with her husband on their 3rd wedding anniversary. Traveling down a road within a beautifully forested area. A loud crack was heard. Within seconds a dead tree, three and a half tons, fell on Rose Marie crushing her spine, causing permanent paralysis of her lower body.
Neither of these people had stood on a street corner begging to have life throw them a disastrous curve, yet it happened. Their courage, strength, determination and will power came forth, creating a new life with new choices they had never before considered. They rose above their harsh limitations using their anger and frustrations as fuel to build new futures. Step by step, hour-by-hour, they dared to climb their own Mt. Everest. Crossing over crevasses of the unknown, daring the odds the doomsayers said they couldn't beat, but they did.
One of the gifts Jim and Rose Marie gave me and I pass it along to you is 'live in the moment'. It is great to plan for the future. However, savoring the uniqueness and spiciness of sounds, tastes, feeling and sight, spending time with loved ones and feeling joy of being right where
you are, filled with the gift of life - you can experience a richness that is all yours.
Another gift shared is 'don't ever give up'. There is always another option to investigate, a new opportunity to experience, love to be shared and wisdom to be learned. Life isn't always fair and there are no guarantees. Each and every one of us faces our own challenges. Today Jim and Rose Marie speak to groups, appear on radio shows and television sharing their experiences so others can be inspired. They have found within themselves talents they never knew they possessed. So can you.
Remember Jim and Rosemarie. They truly have determined to be 'Masters of their Fate and Captains of their Souls'. They are an exemplary example of what can be attained regardless of what life throws you. Living with purpose, clarity, joy, enthusiasm and passion should be
our objective. Aim for the finest and the best and don't compromise your expectations.
You don't need a rock to fall on your head to take charge of the moment. Just do it and 'live' the moment to it fullest and the future will take care of itself.

True Stories About Real People
A mother would write letters to her son, giving him strong support and lots of common sense, sprinkled with hearty doses of love and kindheartedness. The letters were long. Cherished, they were carefully preserved by her son.
She would write about all of the interesting events of the neighborhood, which was in Hamburg, Germany. Never would she speak ill of anyone. When one of his brothers lost his job, she wrote, "Fritz must put his trust in God, who guides all human destinies. He will lead him out of this darkness." There was never an indication of any disharmony and generally speaking, peace and cheerfulness seemed to prevail in her household.
The reality of the world outside of his mother's home was ugly. Poverty-stricken slums with narrow, crooked streets, grime encrusted, 'blackened' frame houses were the norm. Disease was rampant and if a home caught fire it was disastrous for everyone around.
Because of this loving mother a young man's life was filled with a brightness that poverty could not extinguish. The young man was Johannes Brahms. His music touched the lives of millions and continues to reach the hearts and minds of people today throughout the world.
